The Royal Air Mail Service concept vehicle was introduced to the toy market by Meccano in 1935. It cost 6 pence and was sold until 1940. Its futuristic shape for the time was owed to designers who wanted to create a promotion for air mail services in England before war. These models are very rare and hard to obtain today because most of them are falling apart due to their age. The alloy from which they are made cracks and very unpleasant damage occurs. I just received such a car, which I decided to repair using gluing. I proceeded very carefully during the renovation, because any forceful movement could tear off a piece of material. The models were originally packed in 6 pieces in commercial packaging, but I made period packaging based on the Dinky boxes. I am stunned by this Restoration Project. The level of intricate repair prior to primer painting was extensive. But not cripplingly so. The use of Super Glue and Baking soda continues to solve cracked, fragile castings. I have an early Märklin Mercedes racer that is actually crazed all over. The metallurgy of early alloy castings was problematic and evolving. Maestro, finishing all the filing, bodywork, and putty work was amazing to watch. A new process has been added. Using a drill to spin the rims to apply the Molotow chrome. The finished piece is lovely. A beautiful job. ❤ The original white tires were toy tires. The tires here match the actual original Royal Airmail tires. Lastly, the nicest graphically conceived box art I've seen. Kudos and Congratulations, Pawel. A job VERY well done! Best, Stephen😊

I have heard of this model - because of it's fragility - down to metal fatigue, like a lot of Dinky's pre, and immediate post war models - it's legendary in it's scarcity. Exemplary lesson: i never seem to be able to get the superglue and baking soda to work strongly enough to reshape it, but it seems a tortoise pace, rather than a hare's, is the winning combination. Great rescue of a rare beast!

Wow, what a project... like restoring an eggshell! I'm amazed that it didn't fall completely apart. A restoration like this is extremely valuable since, as you say, there are so few left, and even when stored under optimal conditions and handled with extreme care, the number of survivors will continue to diminish as more and more disintegrate, meaning that the earliest parts of Dinky history risk being lost. I wonder if your applications of glue, primer and paint could possibly cause further degradation processes of the metal, only time will tell, and I assume you'll be keeping a watchful eye on it in the future.

@@ananndavinci The car with Navy hubs and black tires looks like the actual car. I feel the point here was to make it more a truthful scale model rather than a "toy." The chrome application on the roof and fin were also original to the real car.

Great restoration of an old model that was literally starting to crumble. I appreciate this might sound a bit 'nit picky', but the car is from the 1930's and the door decal has a 'Queen's crown'. It should be a 'King's crown' which is a different shape. Still a great job, keep up the good work.
