I'm taking this train quite often and I also have to say it's a stress free experience if you get an early bird special. Otherwise they get quite pricey. FYI the leaflet in the goodie bag means that it was packed by an Austrian social enterprise employing people with disabilities

Being a ÖBB nightjet frequent traveller to all Italian destinations (Venice, Rome, Milan) I enjoyed your excellent video! However, one correction on the couchette option: The bedding IS provided! Double-linen, a blanket and a small pillow are there. One has to make the bed themselve. Included are also a bottle of still water, and a complimentary small breakfast (2 rolls, butter, jam, and tee or coffee). One recommendation for the couchette is: Pack lightly, since there is not much room for large suitcases!

Great video Been on the nightjet at least 30 times from Vienna to Bregenz night train travel is just so efficient, relaxing and cheap! Actually you do get bedding in the couchette and those are not necessarily same-sex cabins, but there’s an option for women’s-only-cabins when you book a ticket.

Lovely stuff. I think Eurostar (or any other train company when it comes to it) are missing a trick not providing sleepers to some of the major European cities - a far better option than staying in a hotel airport overnight and taking an early morning flight.

Yeah definitely. The worst thing is a few years ago the plug was pulled on the CityNightLine service to Copenhagen where I live, right at the moment Sleepers started to become popular (mostly from people trying to avoid polluting by taking Jets on holiday) And so as of now we have no sleeper trains from our city with people demanding them, day in and day out. ÖBB has shown interest in extending their Hamburg services to Copenhagen and we're hoping SJ one day will extend their Stockholm Sleeper trains to Copenhagen, as they right now end in Malmö, just across the water from us. So close yet so far away at the same time.
@lvthud

I actually think the railways are missing a huge segment there, I am taking the family around Europe next year, I would much rather pay for an over night train + meals than flights+ hotels + meals + transfers etc, but, trying to explain to adults (a couple in their 70's) that they have to use bunk beds just isn't going to work. I think it was Paul that did a review on (digging deep from my memory here) the London to ???? Edinburgh ???? Sleeper that from the middle of this year will have double beds, fantastic !, it would save me a small fortune (11 people in 5 hotel rooms, do the math) but nope, I just don't see it happening.

I did the Orient Express in 1977 in a sleeper cabin with the family and am eager to see what it's like today. Going through Iron Curtain countries was a little depressing with people standing along the tracks to receive huge plastic garbage bags full of food, clothing, and other goods not available tossed by either family members or just philanthropists who live in the West. Part of the way we were forced to keep the window shades down and not look through the window, enforced by a Communist guard staring through the window in our cabin door (might have had something to do with the fact that my father was an American military Colonel but I saw other guarded doors).

Nicely made! :-) Just a few points: - You get bedding in couchette cars. It consists of a sleeping-bag-like sheet, a warm blanket and a pillow. - On ÖBB platforms where express trains depart monitors show the exact locations of carriages so you don't have to look for yours when the train arrives.

Or when you nearly arrive in Split you are in the mountains. Dinardi alps and can see Split, Island Brac and the sea. Wow. But it only starts next. Its a summer train from Mav and it starts on July 1 or Jun 15. And end at Aug. 31. And the best. You can open the window to the half so you can hang out with your head and see everything. Mega

Ill pass through Vienna mainstation every day and i have to say its by far one of the best train stations i have ever seen. Of course mostly because its fairly new. Other than that it has a good and logic layout. There is basically a decent mall with various shops inside it and the foodcourt really is amazing. There are over 10 different places where you can get food. From pizza, over Mc Donalds, Burger King, asian cuisine, seafood, austrian cuisine. I know people that dont have to take the train yet they still go there to meet with other people and go for lunch.

I have travelled on the Munich to Vienna route a couple of times with ÖBB Railjet. Very organised, arrive at Vienna HBF, find your train on the departure boards and there is a plan of the train with carriage numbers so you know where abouts to stand when the train comes in. First class is very roomy and not a lot more expensive than standard. The buffet service is good and the coffee is superb!! Book a seat though. Keep up the great videos, thanks.

If you ordinarily would fly and then stay at a hotel overnight, a deluxe sleeper cabin is a possible alternative. Not as posh or roomy as hotel accommodations, but possibly close in price to the plane fare/hotel combination. And you get to see a lot more! Sadly, we don't have such nice sleepers here in the US.

I've taken this exact same train before in 2016 with my girlfriend, we got off at Florence though. Was a great experience.

8:02 Correction: The 4 and 6 berth couchette compartments aren't "same-sex", they don't ask your sex as you book. That restriction is only for sleeping compartments (1 to 3 beds). Also you get a small pillow and simple blanket to cover yourself, as well as a small bottle of water. A simple breakfast (coffee or tea with 2 Kaisersemmeln and tiny amounts of butter and jam) is provided.

unci narynin Thank you for the correction - you’re definitely right about he first bit and probably about the second too. Gave the comment a heart so it stands out ☺️

I can testify there's a simple, but decent breakfast provided in couchette class too. Continental, so no hot option, but a crackling fresh Semmel, real butter and marmelade is just perfect bliss as it is. But everything's better than nothing, like in France, or a 7Day chocolate filled croissant on many Central European night trains (in PL, CZ...) The Thello from Paris to Venice is quite likewise, although without the en-suite bathroom, as far as I know, but with a restaurant car (nothing spectacular, but decent and reasonably priced). Breakfast is served there, and consists of a freshly made 'brioche' (a croissant filled with custard or jam), a juice and a coffee, and is included for sleeper passengers, too. I'm heading to the Nordic countries again, and hope to take a night train, this time around.

@@barvdw The secret of the "7days": extended shelf life. No need to load fresh goods and risk throwing them away when they get old, it's enough to have a box of packaged croissants on board, they last "forever" ... easiest handling ever. I don't even know but it may well be that the fresh rolls are loaded onboard early in the morning during an intermediate stop.

@@uncinarynin Of course, but I don't eat rusk for breakfast, either, just because it keeps longer. I think you're right and they are delivered in the morning, which I think makes perfect sense, by then, you know how many you need, too.

Great video! One thing I really miss on the Nightjet is a proper dining car. I remember using the "Corona" sleeper train from Budapest to Brasov back in 2017 and getting a freshly cooked dinner and breakfast in the dining car...

You can still order some warm dishes in Nightjet, the only difference is that they bring them to your compartment instead of having them in the restaurant car.

A dining car would drive up the cost, which was the reason why so many railroads stopped running night trains. ÖBB manages to make a small profit, but that only works if they tightly control the cost. An extra car (+staff) that is only really used for maybe 2 hours of the journey sadly just doesn't work in today's economic environment.

Great video Paul, cheers. I wish we had taken a train/flight when we travelled from London, england to mayahoffenp, Austria.. we had a 24 hour coach trip.... at least we came back on all forms of transport because they had forgotten to pick us up at the end of our 2 week skiing holiday!! Train from home to London then to Dover via coach, ferry to Belgium, coach through Germany to Austria....coming back was coach to Munich, Germany, flight to Heathrow, London and train back home...13 hours....it was our first trip abroad and 35 years ago....times have changed...

Paul, go next time you see the RailJet please go next to the engine and wait there until the train starts to run - Why? Because the engine "sings" Do-Re-Mi-Fa-So-La-Ti-Do! Really - it is no joke. Thank you for sharing your awesome video with us.
