What trombone do you think sounds better?
In this video, I do a comparison with a vintage early 1950s H.N. White 2b to an early 1960s H.N White 3b.

It seems that many commenters didn’t understand the assignment... they simply stated their personal opinions of which horn either they liked better when they played or which horn the players used on the records they preferred. In your tests here, there was no question, in all passages, YOU sounded better on the older 2B. Better slotting, better tone, and surprisingly, a considerably better low end. I’ve been playing my 1960s HN White King 2B Silversonic since

Crap! It posted too soon! I was saying, I’ve been playing my 1960s Silversonic 2B since it was new. I use a 1960s Conn 3 mouthpiece these days and get a richer sound than I did with my Schilke Friedman 47 back in college. But, just because I prefer to play a 2B, my opinion wasn’t the assignment. Your playing sounded consistently better on the 2B than on the 3B.

The 2B has great protection in the upper register and is great for lead playing in a big band, but the 3B seems to have a more even sound all around and would blend better in a combo setting or as a solo instrument. You really can’t go wrong either way, as many fantastic players have shown! Would love to see some small-bore Bach comparisons! 16, 12, 6, etc

So glad to view this! Just bought a 2B (not here yet!) and was second guessing myself. Not any more. The 2b is for my lead jazz/commercial work and the sound is more condensed and has the more noticeable higher overtones. The 3 B has the mellower sounds with potential for brightening “a bit” which I can get with my Bach 42B on a schilke mouthpiece easily. Thanks for the thorough demo back-n-forth. Shows I def made the right choice to complement my bach 42 with the King 2b. Now I just need to sell my Olds Recording!

I had both of these instruments back in the day. The 2B was an incredible instrument. The 3B was more difficult to play and not as responsive for my style of play. I eventually traded for a 3B with an f attachment which somehow made it a better horn. I would love to have a 2B again.

This video is a trip because I was literally having this Convo with a trombone friend not even 12 hours ago. The 3B has a nice tone but the 2B just feels lighter to play. At the end of the day, it's all about preference. But my answer is 2B

I own both - 2b Silversonic, circa '59 and a 3b Silversonic early 70's. The 2b I've used when I'm playing lead for the slightly brighter clarity. lately I've been playing the 3b more just because I find it's a little more free blowing. I also use the 3b when playing in musicals - a better blend, for me anyway. I'm not a 'pro' player, just a high school player who's kept playing (40+ years). Now I'm trying to up my game a bit - really appreciate your channel and will circle back once I've spent some time on the basics I know I should have been doing but was to busy having fun playing when I could. keep up the noble work!

I decided to add some variety and thought the 3B would really mix things up well. I'm like you - just a high school player that kept playing another 30 yrs lol. I'm glad there is a really nice community concert / jazz band near me...

This is the first time in a video, comparing the 2, where I can finally see the difference. So, for me it sounds like I prefer the 3b over the 2b, but only slightly and I'll explain why. First, it sounds like the 3b resonates just a little bit more than the 2b and seems to be able to fit more in different play styles from what I have seen from other videos as well. Also, the 3b sounds wonderful in the high registers as well giving it a very full sound without giving too much bite (which, again, falls under which sort of play style you are looking for in band settings). The 2b also sounds fantastic in the high register, but has that bite that would be great for punchy jazz music. Lastly, the amount of projection that the 3b has versus the 2b is extremely noticeable. So, with the 2b, it seems like it is super responsive and that when you play the notes are just "out there" for lack of better terms. With the 3b, it sounds like you have to give it more effort in order for it to really sing, which I really appreciate in a horn. Yes you can play softly on both, but the fact that the 3b can really hold it back versus the 2b where the notes just want to come out really settles the difference for me.

It sounds like you enjoy the 2b more, part of what makes it more pleasant to hear. They both have excellent but different sounds, but the 2b seems to do what you are having it do more accurately and easily making for an easier and more accurate tone production.

I thought the difference would be bigger. I guessed wrong, at times, in a blind test, even though I’ve been playing a king 2b for 15 years. The lower register are more fragile on the 2b.With your subtone sound, it works. With a clear sound, the difference would be more noticeable. Thanks for the video

First, let me say, I really like your sound on both instruments. It's difficult to tell much difference over my computer speakers. I have a 2B Silversonic and a 3B Silversonic with F attachment. The 3B is by far my favorite of the two. I also have a 6B bass which I am getting used to more and more. I'd like to find a King alto, but these are really rare. Paul, another great video, that I enjoyed immensely. Definately 6 and two 3s between theose two. At times particularly later on in the video with my eyes closed I could not tell which was which. I think maybe the 3B sounds bigger and less bright and needs a technique to play, fill and slot. As for better, with your choice of music I go 2B but with other music I could be choosing 3B. Thanks again, an interesting comparison.

It's pretty subtle here, but I prefer your sound on the 2B. There's a little more bite to the articulations. For myself, I've owned a 2B, 3B, and 3B SilverSonic. Really enjoyed them all. Found that the 2B was a little harder to play in the high range, weirdly. My 3B SilverSonic sounded great, but it was a very dark, lush sound, and the heavy silver bell just made it very front-heavy. Now playing a straight 3B.

I think I like the 3Bs clarity and flexibility slightly more than the 2B but I'm not sure. To My ear, they seem pretty evenly matched. I believe that if I were choosing between the two, my choice may come down to each Horn's playability and how they fit my technique, etc.

2B more Dorsey; 3B more Miller. Articulation seems clearer and quicker on the 2B, and nicer soaring high range on the 2B. 3B is maybe meatier. I played a Conn 10H as a jazz horn for decades and then added a 1939 2B Silvertone several years ago when I found myself playing a lot of big band lead and needed something with more projection. I still love the sound of the 10H for combos and recording.

Both horns have a beautiful tone; the 3B - a darker, more lush quality, and the 2B - a little brighter projection with a slight edginess. My personal preference for versatility would be the 3B. I’ve been using an Anniversary model (1893-1993) with Sterling Silver bell for about 25 years. It’s my main jazz, big band, and cover band horn. I occasionally use a Urbie Green Martin when playing lead in a big band. I use a Schilke 47 on either horn. Overall, the 3B gets my vote.

OK. Admittedly I am biased in that I have owned a 1953 KING 2B Liberty for forty years. I had it reconditioned; its a classic. I love its responsiveness. My Impressions of the SOUND comparison is that the 3B seems a bit more mellow and slightly fuller, while the 2B seems a bit 'sharper' or a little more penetrating. I know the 3B has a larger bore and can 'carry' farther. But I loved hearing you play the 2B, " 'cause that's what I got".

In my opinion, the 2b is exelent in upper register as the solo instrument in combo. 2b have more direct raw tone than 3b which is much more smothly. In my opinion 3b is more versatile to play aronud different styles and bands or orchestras. I play more than 25 years King 4b gold brass bell. Its somehow between basst to 3b. Sound is darker, projection is not bad, as i worked in a different grounds (orchestras, combos, circus) i foud it just perfect for my work (can be load, dark sound, verry good for dif interpretations of sound etc.). It is interesting why just a few fellows played at this horn. I was greatly influenced from Kenny Car sound and also from your master prof. who prefer bigger horn too. Have a great New Year 2022 Paul! Respect and Regards, Franci.

I managed to find an old King 2B, misidentified as a King 606, on sale for $90 at a pawn shop a few years ago. I bought it right away, put a bit of elbow grease and $50 of repair work into it (the slide wasn't in the best shape and was misaligned), and it is easily the best small bore trombone I've ever played, even if the lacquer has seen better days. Honestly, they both sound wonderful! The 3B seems slightly mellower to me, while the 2B is brighter but not stridently so. I think the difference in the sound isn't so much a matter of which one is better or worse and simply personal preference/what sort of sound you're going for. Since I do mostly ska/rock stuff, the 2B calls to me more, but if I were doing more jazz, I'd probably want to grab a 3B as well.

Hello. In my opinion and experience (I have both, none from HN White I must said...) and by far I prefer the 3B ... I think that it's tone quality is superb... it round and full sound, so nice, with that core and sweetness (if you desired).. The 3B will be better in almost any settings... I can't think on nothing that you can play on the 2B that it would be not possible on the 3B ... And the 3B is also a remarcable free blowing trombone, not so compressed as the 2B .. and I think this is true both in the sound and in the easiness of playing... I mean... the 3B is also a more "user friendly" instrument. -Hugo

Like them both, I would use them in different places. 2b for Lead , 3b for more section type playing. Both are excellent in their own way. Please continue the B series horns, if you can!

The 2B. The 3B seemed stuffy in the low register. The question is which one is more playful? I've played a couple of horns that seemed to enjoy being played, that were playful. Playful in the sense that they were playing with you and not that you were playing them. They were more enjoyable and that made me sound better.

Ok I don’t play trombone, my son does, but I love the instrument. My -with a grain of salt- opinion, the 2b sounds more mellow and controlled, the 3b sounds more free and open. You can hear more of what’s going on at the mouthpiece with the 3b. I prefer the tone of the 2b.

@@PaulTheTrombonist Urbie Green was always my favorite trombonist and he mostly used a King 2B. I have heard that "The Green Monster," Urbie's trombone he used for his electric stuff, was a 3B. Dave Steinmeyer, on a Facebook post, told me that even on Urbie's Martin TR4501 signature horn, that Urbie had the Martin bell section adapted to fit a 2B slide. I love the TR4501 as it came from the factory with the .500 bore slide. I have a tendency to overblow a 2B because of the .481/.491 bore size and the 7 & 3/8" bell, but it sounds so beautiful when Urbie plays it. The .508 3B feels a little large. The Martin is just right to me. Steinmeyer said Larry Ramirez designed the Martin TR4501. Ramirez did a lot of horns for famous players including Miles Davis and Maynard Ferguson.
