I bought the Sigma 24-70 DG DN lens for Sony e mount in June, and I was so happy when they announced the 85mm DG DN, that I sold the Sony 85mm F1.8 for this one. I’m not saying people should sell their Sony for the Sigma, but I’m pretty happy I did.

I’ve been liking the Art 24-70 since I got the A7iv, per your recommendation. I just got the Art 85 specifically for outdoor family portraits and my dogs. I’m looking forward to trying it. I’ve been using the Tamron 70-180 f/2.8 in a similar role but I have to backup a mile to get some decent bokeh.

Thank you for the great review! Just got this lens and is very happy with the image quality. However when I'm shooting video, especially when tracking a face in the frame or quickly switching from one focus point to another, the in-body mic can pick up some very noticeable focusing noise, there are some mechanical clicks and some digital beeps and boops, is it a flawed copy or a known issue? Thank you very much!
@PavSZ

nothing wrong with it. Internal mic is picking these through the camera body and they sound probably louder than they really are. External mic should pick these up. If you not sure, go to any camera store and try another copy on your camera to compare

Great review! I personally find the sigma's bokeh disappointing on busier highlights for an f/1.4 and would just stick with the FE f/1.8 if those already own it or do more video work.
@PavSZ
@PavSZ 3 жыл бұрын
85mm FE is one of the worst focusing lenses for video that I have ever used. Very unpredictable and slow. I do LOVE Sony lenses and I'd always go for a Sony lens if I had a choice but in this instance this Sigma 85mm f1.4 is a more sophisticated lens than the Sony 85mm FE f1.8. I can't say that I've noticed bokeh being too busy - it is very similar to the bokeh Sony 85mm f1.4 GM lens produces

Most f/1.4 lenses are not very sharp wide-open, often surpassed by cheaper f/1.8 lenses. My $$$ will be spent on the Panasonic Lumix S 85mm f/1.8 (half the price) that you have also reviewed. Regarding closer focusing, get a macro lens. A 105mm f/2.8 Macro lens will still yield beautiful bokeh and is an excellent and often overlooked portrait lens!
@PavSZ
@PavSZ 2 жыл бұрын
All Sigma f1.4 and even 35mm f1.2 are pin sharp wide open on Lumix and Sony cameras. And I agree with the macro for macro photography but I meant something totally different in this review - for me, all 85s do not focus close enough for capturing close-up images (not macro)

Had the panasonic 85, getting either the sigma 85 or 135. Having a separate lens for any type of closeups you might want to take with a short tele equipped is annoying, with these lenses i bump i to the focus limit all the time in everyday use. Its annoying but what can you do. Well, you can get an mft camera with a 42.5, or a much slower panasonic "macro" zoom.

@@PavSZ i got a regular full frame 85mm 1.8 and i bump into the focus limit *all* the time, i also think about it all the time which distracts me from thinking about other settings, composition, communication with subjects. So now i have a slower 24-105 f4 macro purely for this reason. If they'd figure out a way to make 1.8 primes with "macro" capabilities i'd preorder immediately, i wouldn't think too much about potential optical quality, weight or autofocus drawbacks as it's not as important to me. Let's say i'm in a dark club shooting a band and i want some closeups of hands, instruments or even faces. F4 is a no go, switching lenses only for that in that environment when things happen fast isn't gonna happen. Even for hiking or walking around a city shooting things casually - realistically i'll only take photos if i can do it effortlessly without switching lenses or fiddling with macro tubes.
@PavSZ
@PavSZ 2 жыл бұрын
@@fredriksvard2603 minimal focusing distance is something that you basically get used to. If you need to get really close - I'd recommend zoom lenses all the way. If you really need that wide aperture of the primes, you could use those close-up, screw on, filters - Sigma used to do them and they still can be found on eBay. Those can reduce your minimal focusing distance by half

@@PavSZ Yes, going with zooms for general stuff and a prime for concert photography. 2.8 zooms are heavy and pricy so i'm sticking with f4. Hello, from ur experience, I wanted to ask u about bokeh comparison in sigma 85mm f1.4 lens on both apsc and full frame, which camera will result in more bokeh? I know that full frame is better in bokeh but considering the compression we get from the crop factor on apsc in the 85mm distance will that result in more bokeh than using it in full frame body?
@PavSZ
@PavSZ Ай бұрын
there will be very small difference in bokeh, if any, between full frame and APS-C. There will be very small difference in depth of field but I don't think that would affect or change the quality of photos this lens can produce. Bokeh is not everything
