@@alecp6265 I also think that paper's please intergrates it's lore a bit more slowly, giving you little bits as the days go by and letting you actually play the game and get used to the mechanics before the lore starts taking more of a focus
@creativebeetle
@creativebeetle 2 жыл бұрын
@@Ihasnotomato While I agree with your comment, I'd say lore typically refers to non-gameplay-relevant background information while story/narrative refers to what's actually going on with your character and impacting the game. Papers Please has hardly any lore and keeps the events/information focused from your character's perspective. You figure out the situation naturally by dealing with a shady organisation rather than reading about one. In that sense, I think this game focuses too heavily on telling you things rather than showing them (e.g. the robot on the counter.)

I always felt that the Chinese and Japanese stuff in 20th century cyberpunk stuff was because people were worried that those countries economies would surpass and overwhelm English-speaking economies. That anxiety is still there, but it’s weird the devs put their ‘foreign Asian rest’ in Korean. Also thanks to Kate for translating the ad.
@gooel
@gooel 2 жыл бұрын
It all stems from 'exotic' orientalism, tiger economies, and the Japanese economic miracle. It's guaranteed that Asian economies will eclipse the West within 5-6 years, though, simply thanks to China's huge population base and willingness to build infrastructure.

@@alexjones4219 I'll happily take your money if you want to bet. It'd be like betting against America after WW2. Mature manufacturing infrastructure, a surfeit of labour, churning out engineers and academics the way we churn out lawyers now. Not to mention Afghanistan's resources, ripe for the taking, and right next door. China plays the long game, yes indeed.
@Whatsuppbuddies
@Whatsuppbuddies 2 жыл бұрын
@@gooel While I appreciate your insight I feel you don’t know as much as what you’re talking about as you’d believe. I can’t honestly see anyone securing resources in Afghanistan for the next generation, and I doubt the deeply religiously conservative political landscape would appreciate Chinese investment. Furthermore, your comparison to the USA after WW2 is not fair in the slightest: it was already competing with the industries of Europe before the war, and emerged completely untouched by the devastation that characterised Europe.
@gooel
@gooel 2 жыл бұрын
@@Whatsuppbuddies On the contrary, the Taliban-controlled Afghanistan is all-to-glad to have a reliable investor, in contrast to the countries that have been bombing, drone striking, and murdering civilians for the past 20 years. I don't say this out of love for China (I would much rather that North America find economic success and dominance), but it's simple economics. As you say, the US had an incredible advantage over the rest of the world in terms of their manufacturing capabilities post-WW2. All of that infrastructure is now in China. Even with economic sanctions (which would hurt the sanctioning countries as much as China, if not more so), China's domestic market is larger than a dozen trading partners combined. Barring some sort of 'quantum leap' tech breakthrough from another country, I genuinely feel that it is foolish to bet against China over the next decade.

I know that NL isn't the kind of dude to sit and read through lore, but playing this way in a game that is seemingly story-driven (I haven't tried it myself) really ruins the immersion. Honestly if the only thing you care about is the gameplay you could just pick random numbers and multiply them by 70% instead of playing this and skipping all text. I'm a huge NL fan and I don't want to sound harsh, but this is my feedback on this gameplay video that I personally found frustrating.
