actually, he ripped Pawn Stars. Those were fake Basquiats. Had they been real he would have had them appraised long before he stepped into the pawn shop. The so called friend lied. Basquiat never painted on his postcards. He drew and collaged them. He also never ever wrote SAMO or drew crowns on them because he didn't start to paint until much later.

Out of all the clips I have seen about this show, this is one of the weirdest. Now I understand that with owning items worth so much money, comes a certain level of pressure, but this dude was told to his face that he could get $50k for each of them, so $150k for all three, and even with a 30% fee he would still get $105k. Even if they under-sold, there is no way they'd sell for as low as $17,000 apiece. So, either this guy is stupid, impatient, or has a lot of money and therefore doesn't really care.

These were all fake Basquiat postcards. Pawn Stars got ripped off. Reasons: Basquiat did not paint on his postcards but drew and used photocopies. He didn't try painting until mid 1981. He also didn't write SAMO © on postcards. He wrote them on walls with Al Diaz (co-creator of SAMO concept). Basquiat also didn't draw crowns or heads on postcards only small texts and photocopy collages. Something wasn't right with this transaction and everyone was probably in on the deal including the pawn shop. Hype!

@seankeane7055
@seankeane7055 Жыл бұрын
@@swingaporean If you google Basquiat postcards you can see that the style he was using at that time for those was completely different. These pre-date his success as a painter. They were done partly as a collaboration with an artist whose name escapes me right now, Jen something? Anyway the style was mostly xeroxes with painted and drawn embellishments. I've seen a bunch of Basquiat exhibitions and am specifically fascinated by the postcard project as there's not as much info out there about them. All the postcards I've seen do not really feature his painting style. The other tell tale sign in these is that SAMO was never something he wrote on paintings. This was an art project with a friend (Al Diaz) that become a graffiti art project. Basquiat eventually ended the project and never carried it over into his studio art. Finally they just don't look quite like Basquiat. As easy as it can be to take his naive style and replicate it, there is a certain quality that these just lack. They seem to just throw the crown, the black faces, SAMO, and the postcard mythology into one cluster of Basquiat tropes. Jean had a bit more style than that

So, setting aside that this is television and tends to distort reality-- selling expensive art to a pawn shop for example --I imagine the seller could have gotten more money from Rick on this deal. Auctions are not guaranteed and commissions would have been deducted from the $150k, so that figure is merely a starting point. The real issue is that the seller did not make Rick adjust his initial offer. The seller came down 21% from his original price and then immediately accepted the $50k without asking what more Rick could pay or even trying to squeeze another $5k out of him. This is just really poor negotiation skills. If Rick was unwilling to offer more, the seller could have always walked away from the deal temporarily to play hardball. I'm sure Rick would have paid the at least same amount the following week, if not more after a week of second guessing himself a bit.

I would never bring these little paintings On postcards to a pawnshop dealer! You take these to an art dealer, art auction or maybe Sotheby’s. And of course this guy who owns the pawnshop is not going to pay out 30,000 per painting. Also it is common sense to have paperwork representing the artwork as proof of genuine work. Even if it is the real work from Basquiat. Pawn shop owner lost 50,000, that’s how I see this.

He took 50k for something worth 150k? When you consider that he can show no chain of ownership and no documents, I think they are probably fake. How the expert "confirmed" the authenticity was pretty ridiculous. I mean it can't be that hard to imitate how Basquiat did his "M"s and "O"s. and the story. Oh, "He left it on the train". So elaborate. Jeez.

YIKES! Worst deal I've seen on this show yet. Basquiat is a cut above even Warhol as an artist and these postcards would've went gangbusters at an Auction in NYC or LA. I wouldn't have sold them for under $125K.

Really? lol You can buy these fakes from ebay from a seller who goes by gentlemen collector. He makes these fakes trashy cards and sells them for 2 hundred dollars. DO NOT BUY they are 100%FAKE> He has sold over a thousand of these fakes. they look nothing like real basquait postcards. Only a stupid idiot would buy these fakes, so either this show is fake or they are extremley stupid.

I've seen him on Ebay Gentlemen Collector. Sometimes the postcards sell for $1,500 or more, not only $200.00. He's sold many this month way over the $200.00 price tag.
