It's time to start digging the potatoes I planted in the new high clay soil patch back in summer...

Fantastic Potatoes I’d be extremely happy with both harvests, but there where so many huge potatoes in the lower bed. The difference between both beds would also be more moisture on the lower bed, even with charcoal and other nutrients it had compared to the clayey soil. Thanks Rick Sydney Australia

Good to see your results. My rotation is: grain, favas, root, fruit, pea, leaf. The fava and pea categories also include beans. In a circular fashion there is a legume crop, then two non-legume crops. So after the potatoes I would plant a fruiting crop like corn, cabbage or the like.

I was watching something just today it was an old fella in the Cornwell area in Britain, he looks after the garden in some posh pommy property you can visit , its a huge garden he's about 80 and been doing it for around 40 or 50 years , he mentioned about the spuds they grow how he looks after them , to protect against blight he mixes 1 part milk 10 parts water and sprays , and also the potato plants that produce the berries , he cuts them all off as it puts more energy into producing a better potato , was very interesting .

I am old enough to remember the rabbito who used to come down our street in Arthur Circus, with his horse and jinker ringing his bell and screaming out rabbits, fresh rabbits. I was raised at Battery Point, I also remember the Ice man, and we kids used to wait for him to give us shards of ice to suck on lol. In those days my dad used to own a fishing boat called Nelly May, moored at Constitution Dock. It is a pity that the old varieties of heritage plants are disappearing, only to be replaced with hybrids, that look good but have no flavour or texture.

Thanks John I’d be very happy with the first row of potatoes you dug up. I’ve never had any luck with growing them. Thanks for sharing your experience with us. 👍🏻

Wow well done. I think I need to invest in a rotary hoe, especially for planting potatoes. To date I have only had small patches or grown in pots. I would love to harvest that many potatoes one day!

Love your potato videos. I started harvesting some of mine. I grew in bags and it’s disappointing. Mostly small and not many. I have a tough time here in Pennsylvania…..

They are excellent size potatoes for dutch creams. Both rows, I'd be very happy with that result.

Brilliant work,a cow pea or legume cover crop you can mow back but also plant into would be beneficial I’d imagine,cheers for the video.

Thanks for sharing how you let the potatoes dry & then put them away in a storage bin. I've never grown potatoes yet. Gardening is always a classroom of learning. 😊 Hubs & I have that red-orange clay soil in our yard too (I'm in the US).

Love your videos John. Fantastic haul of potatoes there! Why don't you start some sweet potato slips now and plant them out in October. I have had great success with the orange variety. I haven't had any great success with the white ones (I'm in the subtropics in Northern NSW). Sweet potato are such a great crop. You can eat the leaves, they don't need any fertiliser, they shade out weeds and don't need any water unless its been extremely dry. They produce a huge crop within 3-4 months. They are from the morning glory family so you can grow them after normal potatoes (nightshade) without worries of diseases. They are my go to crop over the hot summer months.

Would love to grow sweet potatoes in it but I have found they just don't do well outdoors at our place - have only had success growing them in the greenhouse. I think it's just a little bit too cold. Thanks for the encouragement and the suggestion!

A great haul and interesting video John, thank you. I'd be interested in seeing you try parsnips as a second crop in that patch. That is assuming that would be an appropriate, follow-on crop? Either way, I look forward to seeing what comes next. Thank you for sharing as always.

I find corn does well after potatoes, I guess because of the shallow roots. Given this time of the year, you could potentially grow another quick green manure crop before planting summer sweetcorn?
@homesteading
@homesteading 10 ай бұрын
Yes, I was also thinking I may get another green manure crop in before planting, if I go with beans, corn or pumpkins.
@johndouglas1848
@johndouglas1848 10 ай бұрын
@homesteading another manuer crop for the top half would be bennifical given this video. I find pumpkin to be a heavier feeder than corn or beans, so I'd vote for either corn or beans while the ground is still a bit heavy with clay.
