PB Mississippi River Walleye | February 2023 Open Water

Was able to clear enough ice to launch the boat in pursuit of some Mississippi River walleyes and sauger. Lots of action, and was able to connect on a nice one.
Also in effort to create more awareness of barotrauma, please try to avoid fishing at depths greater than 30 feet. Walleye and sauger do not release well when pulled up from those depths, and I think we as fishermen should be conscious of it in order to protect the resource. If you do hook up when fishing deep, reel up slowly to help them adjust to the pressure change.
Plus the quality fish usually aren't usually that deep anyways, so better to just move shallower anyways.

Purple hair jigs are definitely the way to go. What’s your preferred strategy? Anchoring, drifting, etc?

I’ve kept walleyes with those warts before. The meat is fine, the wart doesn’t go past the skin and scales.

Make sure you cover your battery terminals when out on the water I got a ticket from the warden once for not having a cover plus never want to have sparks by the gas tank!

Great walleyes. I never understood why people toss fish back in the water though. Just set them down it hurts them to hit the water like that

I truthfully don’t think it has any affect on smaller walleyes. For big ones yes I agree that one should show respect to the fish by setting them gently in the water.
