Friday Five, October 28, 2022 - The five highest scores rolled in PBA history against a televised 300 game.

#PBA #FridayFive
Mark Roth rolled 255 against Bob Benoit's perfect game in the 1988 Quaker State Open. Sean Rash's 265 wasn't enough against Ronnie Russell's 300 in the 2014 Chameleon Championship. Danny Wiseman bowled 266 in the 1999 National Bowling Stadium Open but Mike Miller shot 300. Two 279 games have been bowled against perfection: David Ozio against Mike Aulby in the 1993 Wichita Open and Johnny Petraglia against Bob Learn Jr. in the 1996 Flagship Open.
Not included: during Jakob Butturff's 300 game in the qualifying portion of the 2020 PBA Tour Finals, Norm Duke shot 269 and Anthony Simonsen shot 268. Because it was a qualifying round and thus neither Duke nor Simonsen actually lost to Butturff's 300, those games aren't featured here.

In case anyone doesn't know, Norm Duke holds the overall highest losing score on TV with a 280, with his loss to Bryan Goebel shooting a 296 in the 1994 True Value Open.

Also, an honorable mention to Dick Ritger's 268 losing to Don Johnson's 299 at the TOC in 1970, a much more difficult time for really high scores.

Love that Roth was immediately up to shake Bob Benoit's hand. Class act. Also the big hug Johnny Petraglia gave Bob Learn, Jr. !

I bowled in a head to head league. My opponent bowled a 279. That just happened to be against my 290 game. Was a great match; 22 of 24 possible strikes.

I like how Benoit was wearing a Brunswick shirt, but throwing a Columbia ball. The black U-Dot was arguably one of the greatest bowling balls ever created.

9:20 that atmosphere was insane. Millers reaction with the crowd made it seem like a basketball game. The PBA needs more shows like this.

Back in the day, 300 games were rare even among house scratch leagues. It was customary for other bowlers to be quiet and even give plenty of lane courtesy when someone was working toward an honor score. If anyone had the first 8 or 9, lots of people would stop and watch.

As one of, I'm guessing many now, that have been on both sides...you're so zoned in to your game, you don't realize others have paused around you.

@@BrownWolverine and then all of a Sudden, 50+ people sometimes are behind you, the lanes have slowly gone quiet ( which I hate on front 8/9) and all that's going through the head on 12 is "Stay Smooth AND DON'T GRAB IT/DON'T TUG IT!!! GIVE IT A CHANCE!!!)

I lost one of my brackets in league once shooting a 300. I had 5 pins handicap at the time, and someone I faced shot a 279 with 30 pins handicap. I lost 309-305.

At one point, the US Open bowling tournament paid the winner about as much as the US Open golf tournament. In 2022, it was $3,150,000 for golf and $100,000 for bowling. In 1987, it was $150,000 for golf and $100,000 for bowling. Bowling just hasn't been able to find the enormous corporate sponsorships, having to settle for companies like Lumber Liquidators and Barbasol in recent years.
