This might be a ridiculous idea, but, I couldn't help but think, maybe the reason why Gaia doesn't have an ending in the mythology is because the Earth hasn't ended yet.

I remember a lecture I had when we're in High School. Our teacher said that the story of Gaia and her children reflects how we, as humans, treat the earth. We think we're destroying it but we're actually helping her create something that could destroy us in the end.

I think it's sweet that the host has a personal connection to gaia and her PhD.

There’s something interesting in that she was seen as a mother to all things, and ended up basically giving away every part of her self to her kids. If we do ever find some fragment of an old text that gives us an end to her myth, I hope she gets to rest

Aren't there more than 3 protogenoi? There is Erebus (darkness) and Nyx (night) for instance, whose children were Aether (brightness) and Hemera (day). Nyx also had many children on her own, including Death, Pain, Sleep, Dreams and Friendship.

Very cool video. I hate to say it, but I think that a huge reason we've seen an increased awareness of Gaia in the past few decades is because of Captain Planet. Even in that, she was giving power to children, and again, to imprison doers of evil (although cartoon bad guys never STAY imprisoned). It was very interesting to consider the possibility that she's a holdover from Neolithic times, which honestly makes sense since she's portrayed as one of the original gods from the dawn of time.

The Hecatoncheires are probably among the top 5 most horrific monsters created by any culture anywhere in the world, especially the bit about them having 50 heads. Seriously.

"Mother is the name of God in the mouths of little children." (probably mangling the quote from the Crow) Always thought Gaia just - went to sleep after a while in the myths. It says something about how I learned those myths, I guess. I wonder if we might take a look at "primal" gods at some later point? We've seen a bit of comparative stuff in this series before, which I always enjoy. Be interesting to explore what ideas, what "gods," are the most prevalent - the most basic concepts that maybe every human culture has cherished. Assuming there even is one!

I think there is a danger in just saying "This goddess isn't talked about because the patriarchy". Remember that Greece wasn't one single monoculture, but rather a collection of city states with their own religions and histories, united by a common language.

When you're talking about her "missing from the myths," I become very curious about our sources for her. Like, who wrote the stories we're reading? When were they present in the oral tradition? How did the people telling the myths see her? Was she a model for motherhood for the people who told these legends?

There's also the question of what myths SURVIVED to this day. And the greeks tended to find Cthonic gods um... Scary as balls.

I've decided to name my daughter Gaia. It's fascinating - I had a dream about this name and woke up with the strong feeling that it was the perfect name for my baby girl. After that, I started noticing the name Gaia everywhere. It's almost as if my baby chose her own name.

I find it interesting that both Eros and Aphrodite, gods of love and... copulation would be born without the "traditional" means.

It seems to me that Gaia's story was later conflated into the Motherhood aspect of Hera and Demeter. For example, often Hera's primary role is to attempt to keep Zeus in check, usually ineffectively and using what we would consider extremely questionable methods. Demeter's role in promoting the fertility of crops and livestock, in which her fickleness and inattention is the cause of more strife than her blessing is the cause of joy, also appears as a poor reflection of a true Earth goddess like Gaia. It reflects a cultural shift toward Male dominance and the reduction of the acceptable Divine Feminine to no more than an appendage to the dominant Zeus. Hestia, Artemis, and Athena were all supposedly virginal. To me, this smacks of appropriation of earlier goddesses while neutering them as Feminine in order to keep an aspect that males of the time felt comfortable worshipping. The only other primary Olympian who is Feminine AND fertile is Aphrodite, whose worship was specifically limited to matters of lust and procreation. Yes, Artemis is also representative of fertility in her worship, but not her own fertility. And the later introduction of Dionysus to supplant much of Hestia's prominence only reinforces my opinion on this.

In the Inca mythology the Earth Mother is called Pachamama and she also has the power to create and sustain life on earth.

Possibly Gaia is a combination of the greek words for earth and grandmother: Gi + Ya-ya = Gaia

I’ve heard the theory that we only record myths when they are being changed, or new stories are being added. Because why would you right down what everybody already knows? So it could be the case that Gaia was just so ubiquitous, that nobody saw a need to record her stories.

I was first taught that Gaia cursed Cronus with a fate as same as Uranus after Cronus refused to free the Thousand Handed Ones and even trapped more Giants into Tartarus after Uranus was overthrown and exiled. Apparently she did the same to Zeus when he failed to meet his end of the deal to free the children trapped within her and Tartaturus after Cronus was defeated but it only worked partially because Zeus kinda did allow some of the Giants free, but only those he deemed was useful to him. These Giants were tasked with forging Zeus's weapons until Hephaestus came about.

The ancient myths, even if rewritten, all have much deeper meanings. What Gaia shows us is that we are all interconnected. Gaia is our planet and everything natural (including ourselves) on it. How do we treat our mothers?

I met Mother Gaia while on mushrooms, snakes lead me to her (an animal commonly assocated with her) I saw her as the most beautiful women I'd ever seen, she was a beautiful black woman who turned into all things mostly a lion and other animals. There was a heavy focus on her mouth and how she spoke like a snake. She was surrounded by all living beings and nature who were singing a song I didn't understand all the words of I believe it was different names for her over n over the different names then the name I understood Mother Gaia. She spoke again a word I don't understand into my leg I believe it was healing. The whole time since the beginning of this mushroom trip my legs are SHAKING. That was all she said this word into my leg over and over and into my whole body. I believe Mother Gaia is a very very Ancient Goddess/being. How she looked to me reminded me of Mama Wata and I wonder if there's a correlation between the two. Also the snakes that lead me to her I believe were corn snakes which are prominent in Native American traditions I believe. It's interesting how interconnected everything is and how traditions from all over the word come together. She was the earth herself and I was honoured that she would gift ME of all people healing. I praise the earth when I can, kiss the ground and cry because I want to save this planet but I don't know how and I want to be our mothers child again but I don't know how. I hope we will all return to our Great Mother Gaia one day 💚💚💚

I find it interesting that an old Proto Indo-European name for the Earth Mother was Dʰéǵʰōm, or Dʰéǵʰōm Mater... Which sounds oddly similar to Demeter, though scholars still debate whether or not Gaia = Dʰéǵʰōm Mater = Demeter (although it's fairly accepted that Zeus = Dyēus Pater = Jupiter, so I think it's certainly POSSIBLE). Also, an epithet for Dʰéǵʰōm was Pl̥th₂éwih₂, meaning "Broad one", which seems to have turned into Vedic earth-goddess Prithvi - all these alternative names just make it clear how very OLD these Earth-Mother stories must be, to have been so widely shared, and broadly transformed.

Maybe, like Hestia, she was so important no one needed to tell any more myths about her. Until now.

I think it's that she's not at the top of the pantheon since it's a test, and the Greeks viewed things that had been going on forever as like gods or spirits that greatly influences us that are beyond us. On top of those is the impetuousness Zeus, chaotic but more on potential especially for transcendence (power/transcendence doesn't have any explanation, it's reserved for those who'd do/claim it from the ground) and Hera was all about human life especially birth. Gaia could produce all beings out there but the Greeks knew and mythologized that humans are in shape of the gods that amongst all other beings, (especially of Prometheus) we have the most potential for transcendence since we have the ability to create things of metaphysical level

Demeter and persephone are much older gods and might have been one god that split possibly even before they were added to greek myth.

It's truly haunting that Gaia never truly had agency over her own body. It's easy to fall into the biases that we're so much more enlightened than our ancestors even though women in Iran, Red States, and all over the world continue to have their agency determined by men.
