Are real-life fire lookouts, like those popularized by the successful adventure game Firewatch, becoming obsolete with modern technology like aerial observers and observation satellites?
Subscribe to PBS Terra! - bit.ly/3mOfd77
Meet Mark Hufstetler, a fire lookout at Baptiste Tower in Flathead National Forest, Montana, who believes human observation is still imperative in fire detection and management.
See how people like Mark have been protecting our forests for over a century and continue to play a vital role in protecting our natural resources.
**********************************************
Hosted by Joe Hanson from It's Okay to be Smart, Overview uses incredible 4k drone footage to reveal the natural phenomena shaping our planet from a 10,000-foot view-literally.

@@adlockhungry304 Here's a post I wrote last year with some information: www.reddit.com/r/firelookouts/comments/aou1m3/want_to_get_a_fire_lookout_job_here_are_the_basics/ There aren't as many staffed lookouts these days, and most working lookouts come back year after year, so there aren't a lot of new openings ... and some Forest Service or other outdoor work experience is pretty much essential. So I'm afraid it might be a little bit of a long shot ...

Yes, wildfires are getting more frequent and mores severe. Apart from the climate, the largest issues are definitely WUI as you state but also over-effective fire management. We specifically looked into these issues for California this week!

One of my favorite places in the world is the site of an old fire lookout atop a small peak overlooking Lake Wenatchee in Washington state. We hiked up there one night in August several years ago, and found that we could see the orange glow of a small wildfire we knew was burning in the next valley. After sunrise the next morning, we caught a few glimpses of flames, but mostly just the two plumes of smoke. The fire was burning timber on two very steep and remote hillsides, likely ignited by dry lightning, and as far as I know, burned until the snow put it out in October or November.

A bit short, a bit disappointing at the end (a lot of smoke with no actual fire, so to say). Maybe should have made the hiking more compelling. But I love the two characters and their relationship slowly developing. Their emotions were always relatable and the story was definitely worth it in this regard. The voice acting in that game is exceptional as well.

@@lonestarr1490 It was short, but I really was invested in the story. The Voice acting was excellent and two years later, I don't remember the length of the game, I remember the experience and the effect it had on me. Definitely need to play it again now lol

Oregon also had paid fire lookouts. I think it depends on where the National Forest Service deems the presence of 'resources at risk' (homes, forest fire potential, etc.) that determines if a tower is manned or not. Recently talked to a married couple who have lived/worked in a lookout for three decades - they also made a case for having actual humans in towers like this video points out.

So the implication I took away is that we need better forest management (in part) to help prevent these forest fires that get out of hand? Not trying to be political, but I see a lot of politicians putting the whole thing on global warming OR forest management. My hunch is that the true answer is a mix of both.

"The humanity that is involved in observing these fires". "Establishing a connection to the world". His job is a service to society and nature and I commend him on that, but let's face it, he is reporting angles of apparent smoke. Let's be open to machines being really good at this and, yes, maybe replacing him. If I were a home owner (and I am so not), I would want the most efficient method used, even if that meant him not living in a treehouse, petting his dog.
@Zpajro
@Zpajro 3 жыл бұрын
better than the other video. But I still feel that more view angles should be taken. For one, you only talked about that North Americans have been using fire to control the environment. In Europe, we have used it to get animals out of forests and to remove thick vegetation in forests for easier hunting. It also felt like you were trying to "push" an opinion onto me, which I don't like.
@danriddick914
@danriddick914 3 жыл бұрын
"Fire Managers need more data than ever to keep up with our changing world, and Human observers will be necessary for success." ... I've gotta agree with you Zpajro, it felt a bit like I was being pushed towards a specific side of a specific aspect of a story, rather than being presented the whole story.

I wish PBS Terra didn't oversimplify the fire bans, the practice was definitely influenced by the US gov't controlling the native, indigenous peoples' controlled burning practices which was a large part of their economies and culture.
