A chef's life is the most nostalgic, heart-warming show that I think i've ever watched. I miss it terribly.

I miss it too, it was one of my favorites. I’m 1/2 Jewish and grew up in a rural area in south. I loved watching her and her husband raising their children in a similar situation.

OK - i made this. I watched the video like 3x b/c I could not find recipe. Comfort food! Of course, like all recipe reviews on the internet, I have my suggestions. 1. someone commented their potatoes were still raw. I used russets, I microwaved them flat on a plate after I sliced them for 4 min to start the cooking process a bit. 2. This needs a lot of seasoning and none was mentioned - I added lots of black pepper and salt. I still think it needs one more seasoning of some king. 3. I got the cream of mushroom soup w/ the garlic b/c I had a feeling it would need more seasoning. I used 1 whole yellow onion, 2 ribs celery chopped, 1.5 lbs ground beef, 1 can cheese soup, 1 can cream of mushroom w/ garlic soup. about 4 russet potatoes, and 3/4 head green cabbage sliced into wide ribbons

I have been watching shows looking for some recipes, especially a cabbage caserole and some desserts etc. Last night I dreamed I was at a huge family reunion with lots and lots of relatives who have been gone a long time. I am 71. It was the most wonderful dream. In the past it was like everyone brought their best. My grandma was famous for her caramel cake and my granny for her fried corn. Wonderful memories.

I love this casserole and have made it so much since I first saw this episode a few years ago.. I put my own twists to it like I don't peel the taters and in a pinch instead of cabbage I use slaw mix or broccoli slaw in the bottom layer and I use cream of mushroom soup and shred a block of good Cheddar cheese to the meat mixture.. Yum!! PS.. I miss this TV show and Chef Vivian

I’ve made it a bunch of times, too. It’s amazing ❤️ I add mushrooms and real cheddar hits, for sure

I hardly ever make casseroles, but I was so moved by this episode. There was something comforting about it in this crazy world we live in. I made it last night, on a snowy soggy day in CT..and ate it by the fire with a glass of Pinot. It's not fancy by any means, but that's the point....it just feels good and it's oh so yummy! The only thing I did was to salt the layer of potatoes a bit...gotta have some flavour up in there. It was so good, I'm eating leftovers right now for my breakfast! I love Mrs. Howard...can't wait to visit her restaurants in NC one day!

I just tried this tonight. Made a smaller casserole, for about 3 people, just by estimating amounts. It is WONDERFUL! Cabbage completely melts into the dish so you wouldn’t even know it’s there. Sprinkled some fried onions on the top for the last 10 minutes. Probably not the healthiest fare but a definite treat on a chilly September evening.

I grew to being told all adults are miss, mizz, Mrs or Mr. We were never allowed to go by first name to adults. Now I'm 45 and mostly is still the and, a few tried the first name but it's not common. I'm from Michigan not the south, but it was a rural community

I love the shiny and beautiful braising pan and I'd need only one with a glass lid. It's best for really small spaces where a standard length handle becomes a nuisance, plus the pan can still go into the oven.

I love this show....Chef Vivian and her gracious Southern guests never fail to remind me that there are good G-D fearing people left in this world. This show is like a tall cold glass of iced tea on a hot afternoon. G-D bless Chef Vivian and her delightful family. :-D

"God fearing people" - LOL. Thankfully none of this vindictive, invisible man in the sky nonsense is injected into the show.
@paintur687 жыл бұрын
madhavyu Look into "simulation theory." Read Anthony Flew's book, There is a GOD. You're a person of faith just like me. I put my faith in a book that has never been proven wrong...the Bible. You put your faith in Darwin. He made his theory when sailing ships ruled the seas. He didn't know about DNA. The Bible is the only book that dares to make prophecy. That is what sets it apart. No other book contains accurate prophecy. I hope you find your WAY.

Every year less and less people are believing in the invisible man in the sky. You will get there someday.

Did she put the mushroom soup in? I heard her say it, just saw the cheese soup. Looks good,
@1stGeorgiaGirl4 жыл бұрын
They did cut the camera too much. From the looks of it, she also put in diced bell pepper but then mentioned celery was also added to the sauteed onions so, I would use all three. I would probably use both cheese soup and mushroom soup since all that moisture would be needed to soften the potatoes and cabbage underneath.

I would just wash the red potatoes leave skins on,cut off any bad parts,slice them thin,add a little more cheese to top,as I love cheese,especially sharp type.I wonder could red cabbage work?

Ok she said add the onion and celery . I didn't see celery. I saw onion and bell pepper. Which is it ?

So sad... I got the ingredients and made this tonight. I baked it in an almost identical size dish, at 350, for "50 mins covered, then 10 mins uncovered", but my potatoes and cabbage were not done! I cut the cabbage just like you did, and my potato slices were thin and single-layer. We ate it anyway, and we could tell the overall flavor would be marvelous, but I don't understand why the potatoes and cabbage didn't get done. As I said, we could tell it's good, so I just put the rest back in the oven for another 30 mins. (I'm determined!) Any idea what I did wrong?
