Right after landing maybe? Similar danger factor with the added bonus that you got to where you wanted to go
@ats-36933 жыл бұрын
@Daron Brown True, but if an aircraft is in the air either right before takeoff or right after landing then you have probably got other things to worry about anyway.

I fly the Pilatus professionally and have thousands of hours flying many different PT6 powered airplanes. The engine did not fail as it was still running as the pilot taxied to the ramp. What happened was an oil seal failed which allowed oil to enter the engine's compressor section where it was heated causing the smoke to exit the exhaust nozzles.
@cleareddirect7013 Жыл бұрын
I do not disagree with you at all. Has this airplane been at altitude it would have run out of oil and eventually been a complete failure. I have over 12k hours in king airs and have only ever had a starter gen failure. These engines are super reliable
@MrSuzuki1187 Жыл бұрын
@@cleareddirect7013 I LOVE the PT6 and routinely fly my single engine Pilatus over water out of gliding distance to land because of my ultra reliable engine. BTW, from 1978-1984 I was the director of training for FSI's King Air Division. Then, I held the same position at Simuflite 1984-86 before I was hired by United. I flew corporate and instructed in 10 different King Airs from the 65-90 to the B200 and loved all of those airplanes! What model do you fly? 12,000 hours in King Airs makes you an expert!

@@cleareddirect7013 no pilot would purposely pilot their aircraft intentionally through a visually obscuring screening smoke while hovering danger close to another aircraft and over a airfield. A: That is exceptionally dangerous and violates safe clearance regulations for ground spacing of aircraft on a taxiway/ramp. B: Would have resulted in complaints from the Tower and more than likely filed FAR Violation complaints with the FAA for even doing such a thing. most likely the 407 flew behind the aircraft for safety and clearance reasons. the downdraft alone from the 407 would have caused severe wake downdraft problems for that PC-12. especially since they had a patient onboard which that 407 completed the original flight for the stricken PC-12 45 minutes later.

I know the pilot, and reportedly the engine was completely seized up to the point where he hung off the propellor with his full body weight and couldn’t move it. When you consider that the PT-6 is a free-turbine and there should be no physical connection between the propellor (power) section and the gas generator (turbine section) that is a pretty amazing and catastrophic failure.
