My first Q&A where I answer some of the many questions I have been asked about the Pacific Crest Trail which I hiked in 2019.
Below are timestamps for the different subjects I answer in this video in case you prefer to skip ahead to what interests you.
Part 2 will be more general questions & Part 3 will consist of questions I have received about food, diet, nutrition and resupply on the trail.

Really looking forward to next week's video! You are so kind to do all this work for us. It is greatly, greatly appreciated. 🙏🏼 Thank you. ❤️ ( I will watch any and all advertisements that may appear before your videos as a way of monetarily thanking you for your efforts. I humbly suggest all fellow viewers do the same. If the ad is long, go get a cup of tea or ☕️ coffee while it is playing. 😁 Mary deserves something for her taking care of us and sharing all her hard earned knowledge.👌)

I forgot to add before, when you were talking about the weights, now I know why your shoulders were so sore. I have the Exos 48 and there is no way I could carry that weight with it, 15 kg is the absolute max, under 13kg is much better.

Thank you for taking the time. I do look forward to your food video because as I recall from your previous videos you eat a vegan diet, and so do I. When I read other people's trip reports they often write about loving their (non-vegan) trail magic and town food; it's be great to get a vegan's perspective to eating on the trail, how it was for you to supplement your pre-planned meals with food of opportunity.
@MarysOutdoorAdventures
@MarysOutdoorAdventures 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you Stacy, yes the trail angels were great and provided so much ‘magic’. One of the main things I found was they nearly always had fruit too which was such a treat. Sometimes there wasn’t anything suitable but very rarely but I was always so grateful to them anyway for thinking of us hikers. It wasn’t just the food but the trail angels themselves that made it so special, it was so lovely having someone to chat to and hear some reassuring words.

Congrats on your 1st q&a !! Well done 👍👍😃. I think you're going to find a lot more people interested in your food prep and choices than you might think. There is a sharp bend in the dietary trail for long-distance hikers cleaning more into the healthy food side of things !!!! This I have noticed from a lot of the videos I've seen on KZfaq 🤗 Here's a question for your next q&a....( If you're comfortable with it) how much did you weigh when you started the trip and how much did you weigh when you got home?? Or at least total weight loss. And yes I will be looking forward to your review of The Big agnes 😀😃.

20:47 Your ice ax/self arrest practice advice is spot on and can't be enfesized enough! Having done my fair share of 6,000 meter peaks the ax is only good if you know how to use it. Otherwise it's dead weight and worst gives a false sense of security. Good on ya!

Whoo HoooWee.... That California Desert section was hot, I know cuz I grew up in Ridgecrest/ China Lake = (Kennedy Meadows/ Walkers Pass) and I know that heat with wind can be crazy bad. I picked up a couple of PCT Hikers back when I was down in the Desert and took one to Whiskey Flat Days in Kernville and the other to Onyx as they were going to wait for the Post office to open. That was back in about 78-83 isn. Funny how that connection to yours is so prominent in my.mind.....Cheyenne

GREAT Q&A . . . The only reason I use Corel VideoStudio Pro is because this guy on KZfaq clearly explains how to use just about EVERY feature of it and makes it so clear and easy it's amazing. Search for "Corel VideoStudio Pro X7 Tutorial for Beginners". But dont look at my videos LOL . . . I don't have any but one and I never finished doing the audio on it. :o) I'm going to start doing some this summer. It helps if your good at videoing like Mary is :o) Sawyer says: "While we have no proof that freezing will harm the filter, we do not have enough proof to say it will not harm the filter, therefore we must say that if you suspect the filter has been frozen, to replace it - this is especially true with a hard freeze." That big twist tie is a great idea, I may try that this year :o)

I am new to this channel. Have you addressed you got over all the pain and migraines you used to have? What were your triggers? Would love to see a video on how you ate healthy and I am curious about the coconut oil too. Some people have said it attracted bears but putting in rosemary oil in the coconut oil keeps the bugs away here in PA. Looking forward to learning from you!
@MarysOutdoorAdventures
@MarysOutdoorAdventures 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Nicki, thanks so much for your comment. No I've not yet addressed about how I got over the pain, but I have started writing about it which I find a lot easier. I've not really spoken about it before but I certainly will share my experiences. I'm planning on doing a video about my food on trail so that should be out soon hopefully. I didn't have any problems with coconut oil, but you are right bears can be attracted to any smells.

Just wanted to add a little story about food and bears. My husband told me that during one of his backpacking trips in Kings Canyon National Park he put his food in his sleeping bag and he woke up from a smelly bear breathing into his face and sniffing his sleeping bag. Luckily the bear decided to walk away, probably wasn't hungry. But yes, good idea to hang food or keep in in a bear box.

Very inspirational and instructive! How much did your pack weigh when you left Campo, and how much did it weigh when you arrived in Canada?
@MarysOutdoorAdventures
@MarysOutdoorAdventures 4 жыл бұрын
I was too scared to weigh it Douglas 🤣 I think my base weight was around 22lbs, but with all the water and food it probably weighed 30ish. At the end I was carrying more gear but less water so not too different. I think the most my pack ever got up to was nearly 40lbs but that was rare. Often it was around 32-34lbs in the Sierra and at the end in the snow.

Hi there! Congrats on the permit! I ended up going with Cover-More Worldwide Travel Insurance as they were fairly reasonable and covered for me going up Whitney and for wearing Micro-spikes as well as using an Ice-Axe. I haven't checked it recently to see if the policy is the same, so you would have to make sure it covers you for those things too - or crampons if you choose them.

I didn’t keep track but I’ll try and go through my journals this month and see if I can work it out. One thing was for sure I took a lot more than expected due to vlogging and all the extra time I needed editing and uploading!

Is anyone else having trouble with KZfaq always buffering? I have a very fast FIOS connection and it's stalling out ever minute anyway

Is buffering that spiraling thing in the middle of the screen? If so the answer is yes....it’s awful...I even had ATT send me a new modem but this interruption continues...very frustrating

@@LuckyLarry I tried a new modem as well but it was of no help. It's only KZfaq. My internet speed is great. I get 50 on the speed test. That's fast enough to watch multiple HD movies at the same time.

All videos are black screen and say error loading but eventually load up. This has been happening since yesterday. I'm assuming it's something they know about.

I thought people had to get to Canada in order to finish the trail?

I did😁 I did a flip from Burney CA to Washington, walked into Canada and then returned to Burney where I continued northward to avoid the heavy snow which came early in Washington. I hiked for a few months with two broken ribs and it was a really bad snow year which made it slow going in the Sierra and I didn't want to miss out on finishing the entire trail.
