The 'turnaround' progression is ubiquitous with Jazz music. Whether you pass one every chorus, or you play one every two bars, learning how to walk the turnaround more creatively will make you a better bassist. Here are 10 strategies for playing over turnarounds (with music for each example) and 3 tips to maximize your lines in the 1-6-2-5 concept. Use these examples as a springboard to discover YOUR OWN lines over the jazz turnaround!

Anybody catch that big fat 'F' natural I played @5:37? I know that the music says 'F#', but either note will work with this concept in mind. I just flubbed it. Thanks to zsolt homoki for catching that one!

Ahhh...Mr. P.C. His music will last forever. His inspiration is still felt long after his passing. The world is a much better place because of what he brought to it. He was definitely one of a kind. For this fledgling bass player back in the 70s, his influence was spell binding.

I don't "officially" play bass but I do have a phantasy of playing it, because it's just a perfect instrument, I love deeply Paul Chambers and Mingus, and Ray Brown, and so on I love your classes

Brilliant lesson- wasted years on roots and half tone from above or below approach notes only on Rhythm changes- where was this video years back!!

Great video Paul! My wife bought me an upright bass in 1998 for our 14th wedding anniversary. Nearly 25 years later, I still haven't scratched the surface in learning this beautiful instrument. I can walk fairly well, but your 10 types of turnarounds was an eye opener. I definitely know what I'm going to practice all month! Thanks again!

THIS is pure gold... I just figured out the chord progression of a song I've been writing. Based entirely on this demonstration (so well explained)

I remember way back having no knowledge about jazz theory, after listening to jazz, especially Count Basie, these turnarounds used to be stuck in my head all day. Peculiar how the only thing I remember afterwards was that turnaround in the bass

Thanks for posting. I’ve been focusing on really trying to improve my walking skills. Going through Ed Freidland’s book. It takes a lot of concentration for me. Takin’ it slow and steady. 🎶

that's the way to do it. "slow is smooth, and smooth is fast"... meaning do it slow to get the hand motion comfortable and correct, the notes in tune and all that. Then, if and when you speed it up, you're not thinking about the basic stuff, you're just playing it naturally.

Paul.....any chance you can do some more "technical" videos like this one or the Diatonic ex? They are BOTH really strong material.....use them everyday in warm-ups. Thanks for all you DO for the 251 community!!!

And any advice when you get lost on misterious and ethereal open turnarounds? What do you play if you are trying to understand an improvised an unexpected turnaround?? II-V-I or I-VI-II-V-I, or III-VI-II-V-I, stop playing and listening to the piano does not seem to be a good idea...
