This is looking great lesson to experience. They are trying to make some new movement out there. It really great to learn from that practice as well.

I’ve played this in the past and the kids love it. One thing I add when I explain the rules is “if you step on any part of the blacktop inside the basketball court, your team must start over”. Some of my 6th graders, when the game seemed impossible after removing equipment, realized I said “blacktop INSIDE the court” and proceeded to walk as a team around the court to the finish. Which is the point to see if they picked up on that. Once they do, I just go back to the normal play

Hula hoops can be used as a life raft instead of the step bench/log and the poly spots can be called lily pads. :)

Is it possible to do this activity without piggy backing etc? In my school district covid rules preclude physical contact (as much as possible). Any other covid ideas to modify this activity?

Sure, just give them an extra dot than they have people and they won't have to share a a dot in order to pass one up

Hey Dennis, I play this game with K-5th - you can download the lesson plan from the link in the description to see some modifications that I use for K-2nd.

what can I use instead of the aerobic boxes? Another mat? hula hoops?

Sure, you can use anything, A couple of small boards to stand on, hoop, mat, carpet square - you can also just play without the step and use spots only

I used a thin yoga mat that I cut into squares and only paid $2.99 @ the 99 cent only store.

Good idea! I've also seen people using carpet squares that they got from scraps at the carpet store - another good option

I'm not sure if the games are designed specifically to drive kids to become athletes, but rather to enjoy, and find joy being active. With this lesson, there is also the additional skill practice of being good "team members". Teamwork is obviously an important aspect of sport but also important in many realms of life (partnership, marriage, collaboration, etc.)

In the field day packet there is not a log. I do not understand how to get 5 people across with only 5 spots. Can anyone help? Cross the River Game

You can add a log if you want, I just simplify for Field Day to make it easier. There are a few solutions for this, ultimately the kids will have to share a spot in order to pass one up, they can try to balance 3 kids on 2 dots, or give a piggy back ride to a friend to save a dot

Does anyone have recommendations for lower income primarily minority schools with unfortunate home lives? Cause none of my classes will ever behave this well and participate like this.

Change takes time and building a quality culture at your school takes time as well, I think the longer your at a school and developing relationships with the students, the more engagement you will see - don't give up!
