Hengist's Wild Camps

Ай бұрын

With my bag packed, I jumped in the car and headed over to Edale and the Peak District.
At Edale CP, I met up with Kev green & Jannu. We had planned to spend a couple of nights camping up on Kinder Scout. From the CP, we hade into Edale and ten made our way up the Nab. We then followed Golden Clough up to the edge path, where we then took the 7 minute crossing in the direction of the northern edge.
Once we arrived on the northern edge at Blackden Brook, we then made our way towards Seal Stones, where we quickly found a site and got our tents pitched up for the night.
For day 2, we made our way along Seal Edge in the direction of Fairbrook. We then followed the course of Fairbrook inland for a short while, before crossing the interior over to Kinder Gates. Once we arrived at Kinder Gates, we followed the Kinder River down towards the Downfall. From here, we followed the edge path, past Redbrook, and onto Kinder Low.
From Kinder Low, we made our way across the Woolpacks before arriving at Crowden Brook. At Crowden Brook we collected some water, before heading on to our camp site for the evening where we pitched up for the night.
In the morning, we made our way towards Grindslow Knoll, where to our surprise, we bumped into Jonny Hennell whom we'd met last year on a previous camp up on Kinder Scout. Together, the 3 of us walked back down into Edale.
This was another fantastic camp, and one which I thoroughly enjoyed. 👍

Jannu is a sweetheart. Good seeing Kev’s kit. I love my trailstar, they are genius. I’ve used mine in winter with a knock-off solid inner and it was excellent. I totally get why there are so many devotees of MLD shelters. Townsend rates the TS as his favourite shelter of all time. Great vid Steve. Great camp👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

Thanks Jack. Jannu is a lovely dog and she always puts a smile on face.🙂 it's good that you were able to get a solid inner for your Trailstar, they're top shelters. The only thing which prevented me using my Tarpstar (which is kinda similar in design, being a pyramid tent) last winter, was the lack of a solid inner and -8'C wind chills.👍

Nice one Steve, great video as always. Id love to see more footage of the trip across the seven minute crossing, every time anyone uses it, its "weve just gone across... ", or "Im going to..." then magically, theyve finished it. Id like to see how you find the start of it, and how well its defined etc. I climbed the Nab up to ringing roger yesterday, went to pitch my tarp, but id forgotten my pegs - what a muppet!

Cheers Phil, I'm glad that you liked it mate.👍 I was planning to film the journey over the 7 min crossing (Incidentally, I've never done it in 7 mins, more like 15 lol, but I believe that it was named after fell runners), but as I mentioned in the video, the rain came down as we were crossing. You've seen where the southern start of the crossing is in my other videos. Basically, you just walk a few hundred yards to the crest of the hill in-front of you, then you can see Blackden Brook and make your way towards it. Like most interior paths on Kinder, the path does fizzle out in places, and what path that there is, is more like a Sheep trail. It's not really defined, plus you have to take zig-zag deviations around some of the peat hags and bogs. Sorry to learn about your Ringing Roger fiasco t'other day. If it's any comfort, you're not the first to have done that (and you won't be the last lol). I've done exactly the same in the past.🙂

Thanks for another great vid Steve, I hope you realise how lucky you are to be able to go out camping as often as you do, I'm slightly envious I must confess! That 7 mile crossing you refer to, is it an obvious path? I could do with getting hold of a map of the route as it will be useful next time I'm walking from Edale toward the Northern edge of the plateau, following your footsteps as in this video. Cheers and all the best!

Cheers Bri. Do you realise that it's been 6 months since we last went camping together? Me you & Tim should sort something out, especially as within 2 weeks from now it starts to get darker in the evenings. Regarding the 7 min crossing (Incidentally, I've never done it in 7 mins, more like 15 lol, but I believe that it was named after fell runners). You've seen where the southern start of the crossing is in my other videos. Basically, you just walk a few hundred yards to the crest of the hill in-front of you, then you can see Blackden Brook on the other side of Kinder and then you make your way towards it. Like most interior paths on Kinder, the path does fizzle out in places, and what path that there is, is more like a Sheep trail. It's not really defined, plus you have to take zig-zag deviations around some of the peat hags and bogs.👍 *Edit: I'll PM you a map with the route mate.🙂

It's all about the angles Hardy, I use a protractor. It only takes around 1hr 15mins to measure the correct incline for the tent walls when setting it up. 👍

Am looking at getting a alpkit tarpstar!!. Yet I see a lot of negativity towards them on utube... Are they hard to pitch ?? Is keeping the outer and inner from touching really so hard??? Cheers for any advice. Take care out there.
@Hengists_Wild_Camps
@Hengists_Wild_Camps Ай бұрын
Hi Juan and thanks for watching mate.🙂 I really rate the Tarpstar and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it. The only negativity that I've seen towards the tent was in a recent video by someone (I won't name the person, but you may have also seen his video?), where he stated that he couldn't pitch the tent without the inner touching the outer (which I don't understand?). I have NEVER had this problem with mine. Also, I know others who have the tent and they don't have these issues. Pitching the tent is really easy. You start off by pegging the 4 corners out, so that you have a nice tight square on the ground. Then you crawl inside and shove the pole up in the middle, as far as you can get it. After that, there's 4 more pegs on the outer, in-between the corners, to peg out. Finally, you crawl inside again and attach the inner and use a couple of more pegs in doing so. The Tarpstar is one of the easiest tents to pitch that I own. It's quite difficult to get a bad pitch with the tent in my experience. The best thing about the Tarpstar is its incredible wind performance (pyramid tents are renown for this). I would say that it's the best tent that I own for dealing with winds.👍
