Divided on this movie. The cheesy love triangle and some of their dialogue was insufferable. But then again, there were some pretty great moments in the movie, like FDR's "Do not tell me it can't be done" scene, plus the visual effects of the attack scene.

2:00 I don't blame the Japanese. I'd declare war on an American love triangle too, if I had to sit through their bullshit for three hours straight. And I'm American myself. Also, "squeezed" is the wrong word to use for that sentence. Ebert should've used "stretched" instead. But I digress.

On the plus side Kate Beckinsale looks great. That's pretty much it. They got so much wrong. 1. An American who joined the RAF doesn't get to leave the war just because his plane crashed 2. Admiral Kimmel didn't know we broke the Japanese code. 3. Admiral Kimmel never made it to the Golf Course as he headed to headquarters upon hearing of the sinking of a Japanese submarine trying to get into Pearl Harbor 4. Fighter and Bomber pilots get different training, and no pilots at Pearl Harbor took part in the Doolittle Raid 5. The B-25s each attack separate targets in Japan and went in as they took off because they didn't have enough fuel to get into a formation 6. They never replaced the machine guns with broom handles painted black because the only guns on the B-25 were the two in the top turret, and one in the nose that would be used by the bombardier. 7. There was no aerial reconnaissance of the Japanese Fleet bases before the war because we had no planes with a long enough range to reach them, and it would have been an act of war to fly over them is we did 8. Flying World War Two fighters as low in the air as the did over Pearl Harbor would have caused them to crash into things in real life 9. There was no way to listen into the radio messages of the Doolittle Raid because the radios in the planes couldn't send a voice message from Japan to Hawaii, and they weren't sending messages out anyway 10. Japanese Carrier are shown having angled flight decks which were not put on Aircraft Carriers until 1952, and by then all the Japanese Carriers had been sunk by then

I just don't get it. I'm not a movie connisseur and the love story in this movie is kinda crazy but I think they were just trying to show what the difficulties would be like during a war. The love story was kinda far fetched but I still liked the movie. I think people are too hard on it. Gone With The Wind isn't completely accurate historically but people don't crazy bash on that movie like they do this one. They're just movies. They are a starting point to get your interest in a particular moment in time or subject. Not everyone who watches Star Wars or Star Trek will be geniuses on the matter, but it could be something that sparks your interest to learn more. And plenty of people watch the Harry Potter movies without ever reading the books but still enjoy the movies. I'm just saying that I thought it was an enjoyable movie. It showed what happened in Pearl Harbor and what finally dragged the Americans into the war. Some parts were historically accurate and did happen but it IS a movie and have every right to be artistic with THEIR movie. It's BASED on real events and I don't think it has to be 100% accurate and gory as a war movie to get the point across. The love story just helps to carry the movie along. And even though you said none of the characters had depth, I still liked the characters and cared about them. I think they had depth. They're not Mr. Rochester from Jane Eyre but they were still people that had stories.

Not to defend the film but complaining about lack of nuance after mentioning Cuba Gooding's line that subtlety mentions all he can be us a cook in the Navy at the time struck me as odd. How much less nuance did you want for that specific scene? Do you want them to spell out specifically he can only be a cook because of FDR? You are right that Miller deserves better though.

That's true in general but maybe not in this case, because this movie doesn't make any political statement at all. his movie doesn't make the US military look heroic but just meh. I think if they ditched the love triangle and made it stand for something (like anything) it would at least be memorable. This movie was clearly a historical fiction for teenage girls...like what's with the letter montage? ew. Proto-Twilight Saga.

Pretty much every Cuba Gooding Jr. movie I've seen is defined by his race. Snow Dogs (I enjoyed it as a kid, but I hate it now), Gifted Hands (good, but it has a shadow over it because of Carson's presidential campaign), Red Tails (relies too heavily on racial stereotypes), and pretty much every other in his career. Why can't we have a Cuba Gooding Jr. movie in which his character faces obstacles that stem from interpersonal conflict, instead of institutional racism?
@personofinterest4653
@personofinterest4653 6 жыл бұрын
Because unless it's sci-fi or revisionist history there's no way around having a black guy in America in a movie without at least touching on racism. Even though not everyone is racist, institutions are still very much so.

_Pearl Harbor_ [2001]: Does this movie suck? Yeah. It's no _Saving Private Ryan_ . But more specifically, I tried watching this in the early-'00s at home on DVD. But when that plinkly tinkly background piano music (like @ 5:22) of dreadful, poorly conveyed "sentimentality" played yet AGAIN for the umpteenth time in like the first fifteen or twenty minutes of the damned movie, I turned it off and put in some other better film to watch instead.

I didn't fund particularly beautiful to look at. Light is cheesy, editing is messy and ridiculous, especially during the love part (when they say goodbye to each other through the revolving door). The attack scene is well shot in general though. It looks more spontaneous, and sometimes it gets quite moving - when the Oklahoma sinks for example. After that it's bulshit again. Real bad movie, but still enjoyable.

@samueljamesonfern3245
@samueljamesonfern3245 Жыл бұрын
@@paulnolan8964 Why is the PG-13 rating such a big fucking deal? Okay, the movie isn't wall-to-wall bloody or graphic like *Saving Private Ryan* but I don't think it paints war as "sunshine and rainbows" (even though *Pearl Harbor* is no *Apocalypse Now* nor *Come and See* in terms of mood). In fact, I don't recall anybody bitching at *Tora! Tora! Tora!* for being G-rated. Anyway, while of course *Pearl Harbor* has been heavily edited to secure a PG-13, the theatrical version does have moments where the rating pushes the envelope a bit such as a shot of blood smeared all over an RAF cockpit as well as a brief shot of a leg stump, a scene where blood spurts out of a guy's neck, and a part where one of the gunners on a building Rafe and Danny barely fly above gets shot by a Japanese pilot with blood spurting. *Joyeux Noel* had some content akin to that of *Pearl Harbor* instead of *Saving Private Ryan* and yet that movie ended up initially getting an R rating due to war violence before the rating was finally lowered to a PG-13 without cuts made. So yeah, *Joyeux Noel* is no longer rated R, but that didn't stop it from telling a good story about the men who fought each other in the front line only to end up declaring a truce during Christmas. So therefore no I don't give a fuck if a war movie is PG-13 or R as long as it's well made.

Massachusetts Mapping...do you watch a movie with a notepad and take notes on historical inaccuracies? I've often asked the question, why does anyone really care if a movie is not historically inaccurate? The word everyone keeps omitting is 'entertainment'. A movie is entertaining and you watch it and and are entertained, then why get all worked up? There are few movies that are based on historical events that gets it all right, but again, what's the ultimate purpose of a movie? Entertainment. We watched this movie and it was good. Great special effects, the love story got a little drawn out and cheesy, but that's no biggy...my wife thought it was great. We watched the movie me and wife and boys and we were enteratained. No one set around and took notes on historical accuracies, or not. You know why? We didn't care about that. If I was watching it for a history class in college, it would have been different. But we wasn't.

+jsfbr It's really beautifully shot by John Schwartzman, who was Bay's DP for some of his early stuff. Now he's shooting Star Wars Ep 9.

Who cares if the movie is historically inaccurate! I’m personally a boxer and I can tell you that the boxing scene is so far from realistic, but the movie isn’t about boxing, it’s a romantic movie! It’s a beautiful movie

How can some history geek know anything good about this movie. This movie is terrible and Tora! Tora! Tora! is the proper Pearl Harbour movie, not this shitfest of stupidity.

Michael Bay is the worst director of all time. Show some respect for the veterans and read a history book.

Or you can watch Enemy At The Gates, which does a much better job with the whole "love triangle during WWII" thing than this movie does. Even video games like Medal of Honor and Wolfenstein 3D are more respectful to what really happened than Pearl Harbor.

Woah, he’s definitely not the WORST director. But he should stay away from historical fiction.

Again, they all have names .. Anthony, red, 🙄 and they all meet the women, who also have names….you’re not very detailed in your accuracy to point out inaccuracies in film.

Again… the movie is NOT about Dori Miller, they mention him to add some truth, and they do hint at it because it’s racist that he can’t be a pilot… did u even watch the movie bruh?????

I have a soft spot for Michael Bay, some of his movies are rather decent, in my opinion. I even liked the Transformers movies. But even then, I didn't like this movie. Not even a little bit.

In addition to all this, somehow in Pearl Harbor the US planes attack Japan in broad daylight and land in China near sunset (~4 hours away at 250mph). The attack is monitored 4000 miles away in Hawaii by radio (also in daylight, cause radio bounces so well in daylight), while FDR sits in his garden in the afternoon sunshine. How freekin stupid do directors or editors think people are? Pretty freekin stupid. Here's the real timeline according to the night landing in China: Attack at 2pm local Tokyo time (month of April), Time in Hawaii at time of attack 7pm; Time in Wash DC midnight.
