@Vinicius, It's about a man who just found out that his brother died at war. He gets emotional and drunk and decides to go out for a walk. While out for the walk, he sees an elderly couple with an American flag out on the porch, and he waves to them. But instead of waving, they just kind of look down at the long haired guy waving at them. "Oh yeah, can you see them, out on the porch? Yeah, but they don't wave. I see them 'round the front way, yeah. And I know, and I know I don't wanna stay. Make me cry." This makes him more emotional. "I don't know whether I'm the boxer or the bag." That's why the tenor of the song is so sad... Eddie Vedder admitted that he recorded the song when he was a bit drunk, so he's not quite sure what the exact words were, lol, so they're ever changing. If you notice, you rarely hear the same exact lyrics from show to show. The chorus does seem to stay the same, though. Hope that explains it for you. ❤

@@gibran7912 that’s part of the beauty of this song, make it whatever you want it to be about. there’s no real lyrics and they are ever changing as the other commentator mentioned. eddie once said “I think people listen to music for different reasons, and it serves different purposes. Some of it is background music... The best songs are the ones that make you feel something” music can be very personal and emotional. don’t try and make it black and white!!

1997 Tibetan Freedom concert. "In a surprise appearance on Sunday morning, 15 minutes before the concert's announced starting time, Eddie Vedder and Mike McCready of Pearl Jam strummed electric guitars and brooded through ''Corduroy,'' ''Yellow Ledbetter'' and Neil Young's ''Rockin' in the Free World.'' Michael Stipe and Mike Mills of R.E.M. played ''Undertow,'' ''New Leper Test'' and ''Electrolite,'' about spirituality, compassion and love; then Mr. Vedder and Mr. McCready joined them, as Mr. Stipe sang Mr. Vedder's rumination on death, ''Long Road,'' while Mr. Vedder tried wordless parts originally recorded by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan." From the New York Times article "Playing, Swaying and Praying" June 10th, 1997.
