I love your analysis, it's comforting to know that I am not the only one seeing that Sorey and Mikleo are complementary, to faces of the same coin. They are so healthy, cute and domestic with each other, it's just melt my heart ! I firmly denied the characterisations of Tales of Zestiria the X, SoreyX is so OOC and poor Mikleo constantly rejected and left aside, it's the same problem with Laila, Ednan and the other they became part of the peanut galery, what a shame !

Zestiria had so much problems, while i appreciated the fact that ZestiriaX gave alisha a deserved spotlight it also did some other things i wasn’t too fond of. Alisha should have had the development she got in the anime in the game. I am aware this is like a 5yr old comment/vid but still wanted to add my two cents on it

I've watched all the anime adapts of TOZ and finished through the game, I think the thing that stuck out the most is that in game, Mikleo is seen more like a brother, while in the anime he is seen more as Sorey's caretaker. Maybe I'm just being sappy cause I prefer Mikleo and Sorey over Sorey and Alisha but in game Mikleo and Sorey's relationship is more of the center. In the anime Sorey and Alisha's relationship feels more like the center.

I definitely agree with you on the points you brought up here! Mikleo's role in Sorey's life really does change in the anime. I think because Alisha wasn't as prominent in the game as they advertised her to be, they wanted to fix that in the anime, and because Sorey is the protagonist, they decided to stick the two together more, and that meant Mikleo's role didn't get as much attention. Still, the changes in characterisation also affected that too. Thanks for the comment!

I just finished the anime and am now starting on the manga. I was surprised that Sorey and Mikleo even had a serious argument since Sorey seem like the kind of guy everyone can get along with. The manga gave me the impression that Mikleo started to feel left out when he saw Sorey making new friends with humans and seraphs alike, especially when Sorey made pacts with Laliah and Edna but refuses to make one with him. He even tries to keep Mikleo out of the fighting as much as possible but I think its because he does love Mikleo a lot and doesn't want him to get hurt.

@@Elly3981 Right? I felt like their fight showed us another layer of care they hold for each other. Sorey doesn't want his friend hurt, even though he knows he can hold his own. I hate the anime. I only watched it because I really wanted to see Sorey and Mikleo animated, but I pretty much discarded any "canon" it offered and pretended they were just extra scenes to the game. I think the anime's worst problem was that it felt like it was made to cater to the Alisha fans who were butthurt by her leaving. They chose to expand *a lot* on both Alisha's and Rose's character, not to mention all that non-sense with the Tales of Berseria episodes that didn't even make sense at that time, and with all that happening, they had to cut time away from all other characters, including those who should have been the main ones. So, the problem wiht Sorey and Mikleo in the anime is that they've been shoved into secondary roles so Alisha and Rose could become main characters instead. (Edit: They spolied Rose's character to me, too. But to explain why, I'd go into a completely deep analysis of game vs anime Rose.) The only thing about the anime I love is the epilogue. My headcanon is 100% that Sorey is a Seraph, and the two of them are now bonded due to the connection Mikleo left open. I'm not letting go of that headcanon, haha.
@turquoisemoon3654
@turquoisemoon3654 4 жыл бұрын
I agree with the senseless addition of Berseria... it was like doing some major advertising in the middle of a story? And the anime was ruined because of the fanservice to Alisha... that review claiming that Zestiria was meant to be "Alisha's story" is still up and senselessly defending her as the true heroine, with Sorey as her leading man. There's another review sponsored by a toxic game (just uploaded two months ago) that put a dolphin on Mikleo's head as if to remind everyone that here is a "tsundere with a penis" (dolphins are now penises... gosh!) I don't know if I should be happy that the anime let down the Alisha fans yet one more time after seeming to "bait" them with promises of a potential romance with Sorey. The LOADS of EXTRA screen time given to Alisha only pointed out what was obvious in the game from the start... she was a PIVOTAL character with a limited role... not a heroine who has a major role to play in the grand scheme of things. Her armatizing like Sorey and Rose added NOTHING to the story... it did not fill in the plot holes that most gamers wanted the anime to provide... like Sorey and Mikleo's backstories... their mysterious parentage... Heldalf''s backstory and possible links to Sorey (like the manga suggests Heldalf must be Sorey's dad) and how Sorey and Mikleo's growing up together cemented their relationship and gave Sorey a reason to dream that the rest of the world could live the way he and Mikleo had always wanted... In the end, the anime gave what the fans didn't ask for... a consolation prize for 1) SorMik fans for "enduring" the way Mikleo and the rest of the seraphim were made to play second fiddle to Alisha (or more like an audience to her show); 2) Alisha fans for watching an adaptation that will break their hearts the second time around as Alisha was completely and irreversibly left behind with Rose as her lifetime companion, rather than Sorey.

@@turquoisemoon3654 As an anime only viewer, I thought that Alisha would be the one to end up with Sorey since they seemed to have a lot in common but even the anime gave me the impression that Sorey has more chemistry with Mikleo than he ever did with Alisha or Rose for that matter.

I watched the anime first because I didn't know the existence of the Tales series (yeah I know I'm late). While the animation is good, but there's something wrong with the character development for some characters. The only character development that I like in the anime is Rose because it suits the plot and it's neatly organized. I have also discussed about the anime with my classmate since he also watched it. To know that this is the adaptation from the game excites me. But to watch the comparison that you highlight between the game and the adaptations surprise me a lot because I never know that so much things have been left out in the anime. Thank you for making this analysis and explained how the different adaptations have handled the story and the characters. I've been a fan of Tales since 2010 and I played Zestiria when it first come out in Japan. I enjoyed the game a lot and when I heard Ufotable was going to make an anime adaptation of it, I was so excited, like many other fans. However, in general, I did not enjoy the anime besides seeing my favourite charas being animated by one of my fave animation studios. Besides that, they decided to skip many important moments from the game and add some other events which are exclusive to the anime, I couldn't really tell why I was disappointed in the anime until I stumbled across your Zestiria analyses. It may have been 3 years since you did this video but I still agree with many points you mention in this one (and other of your videos)

Very nice video! I enjoyed it very much. I am probably a very rare exception in that I love the anime adaption of Zestiria. While I will agree that I don’t like how they changed so much and took away many of the good points of the story, I also acknowledge that the anime has a lot of little treats scattered in it for a fan such as myself. I consider the anime as a bonus to Zestiria’s story. And I love any extra material. Being a devout lover of the Sorey and Mikleo pairing, just the anime giving beautiful shots of them together was enough to make it enjoyable for me. But it also had other good points that I loved, including the happier ending for Eizen, and a few of the action sequences. And it is my belief that Sorey and Mikleo have an absolutely perfect happy ending, perhaps with Maotelus blessing Sorey with the immortality of a seraph. I actually haven’t had the chance to get any volumes of the manga yet. And this video gave access to some very beautiful and touching pages of it. And that makes me very happy, only strengthening my love for Sorey and Mikleo’s relationship. I thank you for it. I love the way the game, anime, and manga handle the story, each in their own way, as for me, it’s all about Sorey and Mikleo being together. And that is the thing all three have in common.

First of all, thanks for your comment! It's super interesting to see the perspective of someone who liked the anime, since there don't seem to be many people who did. I feel like your way of looking at the anime is a good way of looking at it - I try to look at it as extra content but I just get annoyed at it ^^" I do agree that the anime gives some amazing footage of the characters (especially Sorey and Mikleo) and personally I liked the references to Tales of Berseria which were included (especially the Eizen content omg, though I still prefer the game's resolution of the Eizen storyline, even if I don't think it was handled very well). I hope you're able to get access to the whole manga at some point - it adds so many interesting details and has gorgeous artwork, and the stuff I showed in this video is only a little bit of that. It's really heartening to see your response, since you're someone who seems to see the best in each adaptation, so I want to thank you for giving me the chance to read this. In the end, I suppose all that really matters is that Sorey and Mikleo get to be together.

This is the 5th time I've seen this video and I still find it very insightful. As someone who saw the anime first and checked out the game later, I still enjoyed both versions of Zestiria though I think the anime could have been better if it included the Sorey/Mikleo argument since even the best of friends will have disagreements from time to time. I also think that the biggest mistake the anime made was glossing over the scene of Sorey/Mikleo's origins. Including that would have made up for the anime's other flaws, IMO. Even so, I can still tell the boys are close and the game made me realize how much closer they are.

I love the analysis, it just shows how the relationship between Sorey and Mikleo in complementary and healthy. I find myself understand the game plot more after watching this video. I have never read the manga but only watched anime and the game video, and I think I will also enjoy the manga adaptation more than the anime. The anime is really awful especially for season2, the good thing in the anime is the visual effect and Alisha fans services, guess the production team is too busy that they put all the focus on FATE, they were not considerate on the setting and plot. However, I quite enjoy the Epilogue part of the anime despite the setting as they show some reactions between characters....that is fan services

I've seen the anime, read the manga and have been playing the game and I can say that I do agree with you that there are changes in their relationship within each...instalment? Adaptation? xD They actually remind me of Yuuri and Wolfram from Kyou Kara Maou! in some ways with Yuuri and Sorey both being the proclaimed heroes and Mikleo and Wolfram being the ones they seem to have most closeness to (to me anyway concerning Wolfram and Yuuri). Their personalities are also similar; Yuuri can often find himself in trouble and act recklessly whereas Wolfram will act like a voice of reason to him. Though their start is different slightly; Yuuri and Wolfram come from separate worlds (literally) and are seen to take a near enough instant dislike to one another (particularly Wolfram) but eventually they begin to put more trust and even belief in one another. I can't say I've read the Kyou Kara Maou! manga (I'm hoping to find a copy soon) or played the game so I've only based their relationship from the anime itself. Nonetheless, even though the stories differ, it's still a pretty good anime to try out. Sorey and Yuuri even have near enough the same dream; they want both races to come together in peace. Sorey wants humans and the Seraphim to come together, and Yuuri wants to put an end to the fighting between humans and Wolfram's kind; demons (or...I forget what name they used outside the dub but it might be the same). Also with how Sorey learns about the world around him as he travels, so does Yuuri in some ways. I've actually seen a piece of fanart of Yuuri and Wolfram wearing Sorey and Mikleo's clothes which first led me to see their similarities xD But honestly, you should try and see if Kyou Kara Maou! would be of your interest ^^

God your video just hit even MORE nails on the head for me why I can't stand the anime and had to bail halfway through season 2. Right at the beginning you talked about the "soul" of the game and yeah, it was not there. I knew it was going to disappear just as season 1 ended (and the fandom reached Peak Annoying levels) but just. You nailed it. This is the first time I've seen your analysis and there's little I can disagree with here. I used to be neck deep in ToZ lore, analysis, etc. on my social media and a lot of what you've said about them and the game/anime/manga is right about what I've experienced with it, aside from actually finishing the anime (I never did, I hopped off as soon as I watched the trainwreck that was Alisha's aborted development etc etc) and the manga (I need volumes 3 and 4). Anyway I'll wrap this up because I'm running in circles. The video is very informative and the comment about the anime's epilogue being a "consolation prize" just earns some bitter laughs from me. It's not wrong.

All I understood from the video was that manga>>>>all adaptations bYE Jk jk but that is also correct. I loved the first season of anime tbh but I had to push myself to finish second season. About being no argument in anime, it didn’t bug me that much tbh because it showed just how much Mikleo cared about Sorey and was a great bonding moment with Lailah. Sorey’s shown to having difficulties relying on others to share his burden but isn’t Mikleo also similar? He seems to keep his feelings to himself too and to me, him opening up to Lailah like that was a huge thing that didn’t really exist in game. While Mikleo was away we also see Sorey trusting Mikleo instead of kinda babying and underestimating what Mikleo can do. Also, Mikleo returned when they were fighting with Drake and this was way more intense than some random fire resistant hellions imo. This is maybe because I was introduced to the game by the anime and I still haven’t finished the game but that part at least was okay to me. I won’t even bother talking about the second season because I didn’t even know what happens in the game while watching the second season yet it bored me to hell. And washed away Mikleo’s importance. I just couldn’t bear seeing my fav character only shouting Sorey’s name yet not doing anything. At least we got kamui!Alisha and adorable Rosali and Sormik, I can’t complain ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ This was a great and wholesome video, can’t wait for more from you

Haha, pretty much ^^" It's interesting to hear that even from the point of view as someone who saw the anime before the game, you couldn't get through the second season easily. I wondered a little if it was maybe my bias towards the game skewing my thoughts on the anime, but maybe not? I do agree that some of the concepts they added in the anime were interesting, I just don't think the execution worked all that well compared to the other adaptations. Maybe different things work better for different people, but I feel like the lack of any arguments between Sorey and Mikleo in the anime took away an important part of their dynamic, but I'm glad that you can still tell how much they care for each other through the parts which they added in. And honestly imo the anime was bearable for me up until about episode 9 (so including the not-argument part), but from episode 10 onward I couldn't bear it lol. I'm still so confused about why they'd erase Mikleo's importance, especially considering his popularity in Japan (and in the west I think). It really was disappointing to say the least. At least there are good things that can be taken out of the anime, and I'm glad we got an anime adaptation in the first place too! Thanks so much for your comment! One thing I strongly disagree with many people about is that many use the anime's differences to claim how bad it is. But different does not equal worse. I very much enjoyed the anime, not by seeing it as an attempted adaptation, but as a new story altogether. The world and plot it's set up diverge very severely, to the point that I don't believe they were even trying to be accurate to the source material at all, but had always intended to go a different direction. In a way, it's similar to the original Fullmetal Alchemist anime to Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood. Two adaptions that that diverged from each other for one reason or another, so they deserve to be criticized as an original work and less like a poorly accurate attempt. The points you brought up did make me think about the relationships the anime established, perhaps I should watch it again. Still, I enjoyed it a lot.

Thanks for the comment! I absolutely agree, different does not equal worse - I said something similar at the beginning of the video, that sometimes making it stay entirely faithful to the original work can be a bad thing simply due to elements not working in other media forms. If the anime was a direct adaptation of the game, I do not think it would have worked well at all, since the game also has writing flaws. I also understand your point about their possible intent to write the anime as a completely separate work with a different vibe than the game has - it has a lot of changed themes and the storyline is entirely different, not to mention the character relationships such as the one I focused on in this video. With that in mind, perhaps it is unfair of me to criticise it harshly based on its divergences from the game. However, I also personally felt that even as a standalone story, I didn't agree with a lot of the writing decisions in the anime. There was very little character development, for example, and a lot of the elements of the anime felt like they were shoehorned in because they weren't established early on (Sorey's decision on how to win against Heldalf, for example). There are a few elements which they did manage to establish early enough for them to sort of make sense (such as the improved involvement of dragons), but I think if I was watching this anime without having played the game, personally I would not have enjoyed it. That being said, my opinion is entirely subjective here. I'm glad you were able to enjoy the anime and find good in it! I'm sorry if I seemed to be contributing to a culture of bashing the anime based on it being a poor attempt at faithfulness to the game. That was not my intention - I hoped only to criticise the character and relationship writing in the anime, but I understand that my personal biases may have gotten mixed up in the process. Hopefully one day I'll be able to rewatch the anime with a more objective and open approach, and then come to an opinion based only on the anime itself. Thank you for taking the time to watch my video and to leave this comment!

@@elixirvitaegames Nah you're good. If anything, you got me thinking about the actual flaws of character development in the anime, because I went into it assuming the relationships are the same as the game, it didn't occur to me to think more critically about them. As someone who saw the anime first, I liked it a lot and think that it gets a lot of undeserved hate from fans just because it doesn't follow the game to the last letter. But I think its better that way since the anime would be boring and predictable if it were exactly like the game. The manga has some good original material too.

Hello! First of all, let me express my gratitute for creating such an in depth analysis and video about Sorey and Mikleo's relationship! I love your analysis, and can't help myself agree to almost each and every of them. The anime indeed lessen Mikleo's role in the story, but generally speaking, as I was also introduced to this series from the anime (I used to play lots of RPG and Tales series before, but due to lack of time and console, I don't really do it much nowadays), for me, the anime is more like a game promoting material, just like many other game originated anime. But even in the anime, I can sense the importance and the extraordinary relationship they both share with each other. From there on, my curiosity took the best of me and I proceed to play the game, where their relationship's portrayal there really touched my heart. We can't say that the anime is not canon, but personally I have a tendency to take the first and original material, which in this case the game more into my mind, and I have to admit that the portrayal there is just perfect. I haven't read the manga yet, but from your video, the manga also gave some more depth to their relationship, though often more in depth from Mikleo's POV, it would seem. The argument part is especially touching for me. As for the ending, I'm a bit curious as why they have to make it rather differently in game, manga and anime. I've heard before (rumors or not, I'm not sure of though) that the 20th year celebration of Tales series will consist of trilogy, starting from Zestiria, Berseria and something else, but due to mixed response Zestiria gained, it's unclear whether they will really continue this trilogy concept thing. But considering this trilogy thing, I can came to an understanding of the game's ending, since it'll be easy to do something or even anything from there on, once Sorey has reawakened and reunited with Mikleo there. As for the manga's ending, personally my take of it is more into your 2nd interpretation (just like you), that Sorey has reawakened (as a Seraphim?), and returned to Elysia with Mikleo, spent some time there and from there onwards they're going to fulfill the dream they've been sharing together. Sorey doesn't don on his Shepherd clothes anymore since he's not (supposed to be) one anymore when he reawakened. And for me, the way Mikleo saw his memories of his childhood and younger days with Sorey depicted the important chapters in their life, the first one being their childhood, the second chapter being the beginning of the game's journey, and the last shot is the journey they'll be going from now onwards, since I believe the knock Mikleo heard should be real and not just a memory. As seen in the manga's epilogue, even in their childhood and the beginning of the game, Sorey tended to depart somewhere on that certain hour of day, hence my take is that Sorey is the one who knocked on Mikleo's door, and while Mikleo went out to see him, he also saw some of his past, the numerous times they're going to depart on a journey, finally join him on top of that cliff, and will soon go on another journey together, judging from the word "let's go" and "we find each other and we continue to walk on". The part which kinda bugs me in the manga's ending is the Celestial Records Mikleo was holding, it should be Sorey's and if he has reawakened, I think he would want it back ASAP. Of course, there's always possibility that Sorey asked Mikleo to hold on to it for a little longer, or if Mikleo is just about to return it to him from now on, but somehow it kinda bugs me. As to why I take Sorey should be a Seraphim is that his human body should not be able to withstand such long sleep, we saw Asura during the Water Trial gone as soon as he's being purified, since his body has long gone with time. Of course, there's also chances that the flow of time deep down there is different or doesn't affect him at all though.. But if Sorey did ended up to be reborned as Seraphim, it could also be that he might not remember every details of his human memories, hence why Mikleo still keep his Celestial Record as to slowly help Sorey to regain the memories from here on. But, regarding the first interpretation, some part of me kinda feel that if that's it, it'll mean that Mikleo is being half delusional (or maybe so delusional that he heard a knock on his door?), and I kinda don't want to believe that? XD So sorry for creating such a wall of words here, but after watching your video, I can't help but to rethink and analyze more and more about this unique and beautiful relationship they shared together. Apologize in advance if my thoughts and opinions might sound weird for you, but if you have any opinions on my thoughts here, I'd love to hear and discuss them! Once again, thanks so much for creating this analysis video!

Hi! Thank you so much for your comment, it was such a joy to see in my inbox! I see your point about the anime being a promotion for the game - it makes a lot of sense for them to do that, especially since not everyone has the time and/or resources to play the full game (as you mentioned). Still, it stings a little as a game fan to have a disappointing experience with an adaptation ^^" I'm glad that the anime persuaded you to pick up the game, though! It's interesting to see things from your perspective, since I only watched the anime after playing the game. The manga is really wonderful, there's so much more content even than what I included in the video (though I think there is more light on Mikleo's POV than Sorey's in regard to their relationship, but that feels very in-character for them, imo). The argument is also one of my favourite parts of the game and manga! It is interesting to think about why they might have changed the ending - for the anime, I can almost see why, since they made a lot of changes anyway and probably wanted to leave room for it to become a big shonen series if it was successful, with more purification etc. in the future. I'm not so sure about the manga, actually - maybe it was personal preference from the mangaka? In any case, I hope they do decide to continue with a trilogy - I know it's a long-shot, but with the success of Berseria, it might be possible, right? I like your interpretation of the manga's epilogue! Since Sorey doesn't show up except as a memory until later, I didn't consider the possibility of him actually being there until the cliffside, but it's possible he was out of frame each time. All of the other reasons you stated are ones which I agree with as to why it's more likely the second interpretation that I mentioned in the video. (((Small manga spoiler here, but something happens to Sorey's cloak near the end of the manga which means he doesn't have it before he goes to sleep, so the continuity would still technically work even if he was human. Still, I don't think that's the case, as I said in the video.))) As for the Celestial Record, I wonder if Sorey wants Mikleo to hold onto it until they achieve their new dream? When he gives it to Mikleo, Sorey says "I want you to hold onto this as a symbol of our new dream." I can just imagine them travelling together and Mikleo constantly having to hand it to Sorey whenever Sorey wants to check something in it though, haha ^^" I also think Sorey has to have become a Seraph, what with the amount of time which must pass before he awakens, but there could be some loophole with the purification and Maotelus' blessing or something which we don't know about. I want to believe he would keep most of his memories, even if it's more likely that he wouldn't, just because it would be so sad for him not to remember his journey or the friends he made along the way. (Not to mention Gramps ;o;) I don't honestly want to believe my own first interpretation either, but not so much for the same reason as you? ^^" I think there's a kind of notion of having memories so visceral and realistic that you can almost feel everything you felt and hear everything you heard at the time it happened. That's what I think Mikleo was probably experiencing - maybe he heard something outside that reminded him of when Sorey used to knock on his door before the sun was up, ready to explore, and that's what makes him decide to take a literal walk down memory lane. Of course, it's nicer to believe that Sorey is actually there, haha. Don't worry about it! I loved reading all of your thoughts, they were super insightful! I'm happy you took the time to share them here, so thank you again!

Elixir Vitae Games Elixir Vitae Games Elixir Vitae Games Thank you for taking your time to reply! Glad that my wall doesn't bother you! XD Regarding the manga's ending interpretation, noted about the cloak! I also kinda want him to remember most of the details (or preferably every details) of his human memories (I know, Gramps!! :'( ), it'll just be sad if he forgot the important individuals in his life before.. As for the first interpretation, I can see now that there's indeed some roman (as how Japanese would say it, not sure if there's a similar word in English, but I just can't came up with other words here.. ^^') in walking down the memory lane. Though I have to agree that having the real individual is always the best! ^^ Once again, thanks!!

I prefer that interpretation too... that Sorey was actually knocking on his door... and he remembered how it was ONLY Sorey who would do that kind of thing. One thing that got me though was the fact that in the official CD drama versions that came out after the game (and it takes off from the game than any other source), it was made clear how Sorey and Mikleo lived together in one house when they were very young and that they slept on the same bed (unlike in the manga where they were living separately even as youngsters)... but as the game and the CDs both indicate, Sorey and Mikleo were made to live in separate houses as they got older (i.e. puberty). In the game version, I also remember that Gramps had no qualms letting Alisha sleep in the same house as Sorey when Sorey asked if she could stay for the night (in fact for several nights). It would have been more logical if he asked Sorey to stay with Mikleo in the meantime so Alisha could use Sorey's house and have some privacy (Sorey was already 17 after all). Everyone I knew who played the game thought it was a clear sign that Gramps knew that Sorey would NOT be interested in Alisha intimately so he was able to forego his concern that any physical contact with a human might spread malevolence or "taint" Sorey's purity. But I guess Gramps was not able to forego his concern that contact between a human (Sorey) and Mikleo (seraphim) is more worrisome for seraphim. ^_^ In the CD Mikleo complained that Sorey was being unreasonable in suggesting that they sleep on the same bed again. It was a few nights before the final battle and somehow, Sorey had dreams of him and Mikleo back in Elysia. After having a conversation with Mikleo he didn't want to go back to his bed and took to lying on Mikleo's bed. To think their beds are in the same room. In general, the game hinted a lot on the relationship between Sorey and Mikleo more than the anime and the manga did. The manga was the least focused on the relationship between Sorey and Mikleo as the end felt kinda disconnected. Sorey was never shown to say anything if he was actually there... and if he wasn't actually there, it would be sad because it implies that Mikleo might be waiting forever hopelessly... Sorey facing Maotelus on his own also seemed a bit unlikely of him... and the end was too abrupt, the journey too short for Sorey to have enough character development leading to his "answer" before the final confrontation. The manga also mentioned that Mikleo and Sorey had been together "like brothers" which neither the anime nor the game ever mentioned or hinted. Even if the anime ending seemed like fanservice (it was, I believe, truly a consolation prize for Sormik fans being there until the very end and putting up with the SorAli fanservice as well) I actually prefer it over the manga and maybe I'm the only one who thinks that Sorey NOT becoming a seraph at the end of the anime is NOT that bad. He could still be reborn as a seraph when he dies, and with that, Sorey might still be able to retain his memories as a human if he's strong enough. Game ending is the best... I'm sure that Sorey is a seraph in the game version as his "presence" in the ruins before he caught Mikleo is hardly what you can call "physical" or "human." Mikleo sensed his presence before Sorey caught him... but he merely "sensed" it not "seen" it... meaning Sorey has been able to manifest himself as a seraph in its spiritual form. ^_^

I watched the anime first and honestly, the story felt a little rushed and incomplete. like their was a good story in their but it was going to fast and jumping from place to place so much that the emotional weight was lost in a lot of places. Its actually quite exiting to me to find out their is far more lore and world building to explore than the anime portrayed and a format where the story is told better. for instance, the anime never brings up the blind side thing. like, ever. I didn't even know about till this video. Alisha just stays one of Sorays squires with Rose and they don't imply that it takes any tole on him at all. it would have been nice to have that little bit of interaction between Mikleo and Soray like they have in the game. it gives us a tiny peak into just how much these two understand eatchother. now, don't get me wrong. with it being my first exposure to the story, tales of zestirea the X will always be dear to me. seriously, I had never heard of it before and found it on funimation. I spent the entire time watching it saying x and not cross. I actually still read it like that on habit ,:3 regardless of what it lacked, I still enjoyed the characters and got very invested in the plot. I full on sobbed at the end and actually felt really betrayed on behalf of Miklio. all in all, I think the anime had potential to be a good adaptation but it just didn't take the time to slow down and explore everything it had to unpack. perhaps that's just because they weren't given enough episodes to do so (though we probably could have used those two episodes running around with edgy, boob woman for no reason to do something else) but still.

I did enjoy the anime and thought that it could have been a masterpiece if it included more details from the game, especially the Sorey/Mikleo argument where Mikleo gets angry enough to strike Sorey. Having Alisha play a larger role was nice and those little fan service moments like the waist grab scene and the pumpkin mousse scene still made watching the anime worthwhile. The final fight and ending did not disappoint either. I actually thought it was happier than that of the game since its implied that Sorey returns after just a few years instead of a few centuries so he could see Alisha and Rose again if he wanted.

Love your analysis, I recently started delving into forums and videos of Tales of Zestiria and is interesting to know very different points of view. For the most part, people agree that Sorey and Mikleo have a very close bond between each other but like always there's other that says their bond is very subjetive and they never thought of SorMik as more than friends and I have also encounter people saying they have a disgusting relashionship and how they regret playing the game just for this reason. So I wanted to watch the anime and read the manga just to find more aspects of the story and come to a conclusion, saddly I stopped watching the anime since I kept reading comments of very angry fans claiming how awful it was. I can see that the anime panders to all the angry SorAli fans and it hurts me how much the personallity of the characters change. I truly believed Sorey turn into a seraphim at the end. I won't take into account the anime since it seems to have a lot of contradicting ideas with the game (Sorey armatizing with Mikleo at the end) I have also noticed all the hate towards Rose, something I don't understand because I absolutly adored Rose in the game. Over all, is nice seeing someone talk about SorMik relashionship without being a crazy shipper or a really angry SorAli fan. Sorry if my comment was too long and sorry for my bad english.

Thanks so much for your comment! It's really interesting to see your opinions on these things! I find it surprising that anyone would regret playing the game just because of two male characrers being close, but I suppose different people take things differently? It's unfortunate that the anime ended up that way, especially since it had so much promise in the beginning. I suppose it can't be helped, since they were trying to appeal to a different audience than those who actually enjoyed the game for what it was. Even if adaptations need to have differences, for them to change characters completely really does make things unenjoyable for fans of the source material. I also really loved Rose, but I suppose some people dislike her because they don't like energetic characters like her, or because she replaced Alisha. Thank you! I'm glad I was able to write a fair analysis about these two, I really wanted to remain as analytical as possible without focusing on my own biases about these characters. It's good to know that came across well! Also don't worry about it! Your English is great ^^

I also love Rose and yeah, sorry, but I'm a "crazy" SorMik "shipper" (ha ha... mind you, even crazy is subjective... and unlike others my "crazy" is just fangirling crazy, not the kind that hurts anyone). I like your comment, but I seriously hope you didn't stop watching the anime because of the haters. The anime has its good points... like offering an alternative to the game's idea that dragons can't ever be purified. Sorey was OP in the anime... and somehow his showing more affection for Alisha (though it was only in the beginning) can be a good thing too as it showed that he is capable of expressing his feelings more openly. In the game, Sorey was expressive only toward Mikleo and his worry for Alisha was kinda inconsistent... like as soon as he realized that Alisha was willing to bribe politicians to ensure that peace negotiations between Hyland and Rolance will go well, Sorey kinda realized that his dream was different from hers and sets off with the seraphim without even saying goodbye to her (hence the doubtful tone he uses when he tells Alisha in the game "Oh you did? On your own?" after Alisha tells him that peace negotiations are on the way and she's part of it). As for the angry SorAli fans, they're still trying their godawful best to discredit the entire game to this very day... but that's something we can all ignore. They can hate Hideo Baba to hell but it was not his idea alone that made SorMik canon in the eyes of many fans. Bandai Namco Europe approved the storyboard for the game and was a big influence in its early development. I'm not saying that Europe is homo... but let's face it there is something more disturbing in the idea that heroes can't be homos than in the idea that Sormik is possibly gay. ^_^

The anime might not have been perfect but its still far from gutter trash. I think that its actually a good thing that it has an original plot and is not a carbon copy of the game. The manga also has a lot of interesting original material as well, the only thing I didn't like about it was that it was so short, only 4 volumes and cuts out about 50% of the game. It should have been at least 10 volumes. Personally, I liked all 3 versions of Tales of Zestiria. ...You have a point. Guess I didn't think it through properly before writing this video. I think it's because only Shepherds/Squires could armatize in the game, and I think it's the same way in the anime too ("It is the Shepherd's greatest and final weapon. Trying it with a squire is too dangerous." - Lailah, ep 21). If Sorey can still armatize in the anime, it means he's likely still the Shepherd (or possibly that he carried over that ability from before, or because he's just that close with Mikleo). To still be the Shepherd, he would still need Lailah as his prime lord, and that would mean he'd still have the power of purification. Or at least, that's probably the thought process I had when making this video. Feel free to let me know if there's a flaw in my logic here, because that'd be really helpful. As far as I can tell, there's no one "canon" ship, but that's normal in Tales of games. Even the ones which have heavily hinted ships don't usually explicitly say those characters are together (eg. Luke and Tear in Abyss, Lloyd and Colette in Symphonia). That being said, Sorey has been stated to be incompatible in a normal m/f relationship. His relationship with Mikleo is definitely the closest to a "canon" ship that the game has, imo. There's certainly enough subtext for it to be plausible.

I believe the author was brilliant to confirm their relationship in a way that was ambiguous enough not to turn off fans who aren't into yaoi and still leave wiggle room for fans who prefer Sorey/Alisha or Sorey/Rose even though both of them are doomed ships in the manga and game versions since Sorey never sees either of them again after he goes into his enchanted sleep. Altering things instead of adding things that are missing or wanting in the source material is a bad choice... but if the anime is simply to advertise the game it should have been only 12 episodes... I think they really want to do many things at thesame time... like give the angry SorAli fans a bone to chew while they're thinking of a better way to close the gap in the game. @@Elly3981 On hindsight, I have to agree. When I think about it, SorMik fans were a bit harsh on the anime, some even saying that namco tweeted ufotable to bash it with regard to the bad ratings... but I found out later it was just a nasty, baseless rumor. In fact the anime has sold DVDs quite well that anime-only fans thought there was going to be a season 3. I was hoping for more Sorey/Mikleo interaction too... but I think the highlights of the game and the manga were deliberately excluded so that each version would have its "selling" point and individual attractiveness to fans. It's like... if there are differences among the versions, fans would want to check out/try all versions to choose for themselves which they prefer. Mikleo's regret and Sorey's "manly" submissiveness to Mikleo's anger appeals to me on a different level. Like... friends would be hitting each other and throwing punches, but Sorey (even in the drama CD) just gets bothered and anxious when Mikleo's mad at him... and Mikleo gets away with everything because Sorey lets him. ^_^ I think the Alisha/SorAli fans hoped for more SorAli time so they had to cut Mikleo's parts... and even Sorey being carried by Mikleo to an inn after his first armatus with Lailah was changed to Sorey staying at the castle and having Alisha take care of him. It's fanservice, but it's ok I guess. ^_^

@@turquoisemoon3654 I absolutely adore Sorey and Mikleo's friendship. Even though I saw the anime first, it was still obvious to me how much they cared about each other. I checked out the game and manga when my friend said they were even closer in them. I knew another fan who told me he didn't like the way Mikleo was depicted in the manga, almost like a jealous girlfriend when he sees Sorey make new friends with other humans and seraphs. He said that Mikleo cares deeply for Sorey and no matter how badly Sorey might screw up, Mikleo would never never hit him, ever. The way I see it, Sorey is very lenient and forgiving towards Mikleo because I can promise you that if my best friend (or boyfriend) were to hit me over an argument, I would *never* speak to them again. I though Sorey and Alisha might have been a cute couple at first since they seem to have a lot in common but it probably wouldn't have worked out in the long run since Alisha would have to marry someone of royal blood and produce an heir while Sorey is far too restless and adventuresome to settle down for long. He seems to be closer to Rose in the game but their relationship never seems to go past friendship and she never sees Sorey again after he goes into his enchanted sleep. If Mikleo had been human, he probably would have died of old age before Sorey woke up too.

@@Elly3981 Even in the game, the seraphim always say that Sorey doesn't lie (and doesn't get jokes either, for he sticks too close to the truth) so when Zaveid teased him with Rose (like if they could just be a real couple instead of faking it around Rolance) they both said "No way!" in such a casual way that everybody believed them. As for Alisha, when I watch psychology vids on romance (not reliable but they have the basics down at least) the main element that indicates attraction is curiosity for the other person... and Sorey was never curious enough about Alisha's personal stuff to ask even indirectly about her. The only things he ever asked about is Alisha's armor, her readiness for battle, and whether she was involved in political corruption (with Mikleo convincing him that those were just rumors because Sorey was suspicious of it most of the time). Even Aliosha being the reason for his becoming a Shepherd was Lailah's "theory" which Sorey never knew and never confirmed (only corrected later in the CD drama by Sorey himself). Just like you, at first I thought Alisha and Sorey were "almost" a thing and that Sorey didn't want to go to Pendrago with her because he knew the closer they were together, the more he would feel bad saying goodbye UNTIL I actually played the game and finished all the skits (I only followed the comments on the walkthrough before). I even told a SorMik fan once, "Uh, I appreciate your ship, but I think it's SorAli... based on Edna's teasing). But after the game, I realized it was just the seraphim thinking that Sorey would go for Alisha because they were both human and human-seraph relations were frowned upon/taboo. So of course, they'd never pair Sorey with Mikleo... but then Zaveid has those "innuendos" that reveal that he and the seraphim already "sensed" where Sorey was leaning (like they all said "uh-huh" at some point while Sorey was leaning over Mikleo and everyone like gave both of them space). I love that the cues are all subtle, so gamers aren't forced to see them intimately... only if they want to, which is clued in anyway. And yeah... Alisha and Rose in the end were human partners for Sorey that basically were chosen for him by Lailah and Mikleo. The only member of the party that Sorey kept giving references too (even shocking Alisha when he said that Mikleo used to "feed" him) was Mikleo. And I noticed that Sorey is pretty secretive about him with Lailah in the Galahad Ruins where it was really obvious that Sorey liked ruins enough only when Mikleo was there. ^_^

Your analysis is truly magnificent. Been watching it several times hahahha. You know what, I really believe that SorMik is canon ship however due to the fact that heterosexuality is the default and Japan is not open for homosexuality, the producer decided to tone down the ship. But if we are really going to look at it, Sorey and Mikleo truly belong to each other despite the anime showing some moments between Sorey and Alisha.

Hideo Baba's given an interview admitting the ship is canon. He refered to Mikleo as Sorey's "one and only". I don't think their relationship was toned down to avoid controversy, but because Tales of games have toned down relationships, even when the pairings are heterosexual. There's also the fact that people in a japanese relationship also have completely different displays of affection than people in UK or the americas. There are videos by bi-national couples talking about this on youtube (such as Rachel and Jun's chanel), japanese men often say that saying "I love you" feels like something a person would say to their significant other on their death bed, so it's unusual and shocking.

@@alephnulI A lot of gamers (and they are not even gay) admitted that ToZ is likely to be the first Tales game with a canon gay ship so I couldn't understand the rabid hate other Tales fans have for ToZ when it's fairly obvious that gayness is not something new to Tales even if it's only implied or mildly hinted in those other games. But I do feel that regardless of the Japanese way of expressing feelings which seemed too mild for Western audiences (like "I want to hold you" for the Japanese means "I want to make out with you" and "The moon/stars are beautiful tonight" means, in Japanese, something like "I like you a lot... or I care about you... or I will miss you"), there is the possibility that they really toned down the ship in the anime and made a few changes in the latter part to show more SorAli romance, even if it's just fanservice. I remembered an earlier review saying that ufotable started with the anime really early and asked whether bandai wanted it to "clean up" the gay because of the surprising negative response from SorAli fans to the game. However, namco thought it would send a bad message to audiences (i.e gay elements needed "cleaning up") so ufotable had to make adjustments to the anime in the latter part of the first season. The first few episodes of season 1 is actually very suggestive of SorMik, even more so than the game... then the sudden shift to SorAli in the last few episodes of season 1 that got so many fans confused.

@@turquoisemoon3654 Personally, I think its for the best that writers and producers keep relationships between star characters of the same sex ambiguous so that fans can perceive it the way they wish, whether platonic or romantic. I've seen LGBTQ relations in other anime (like Castlevania), but they're usually not between the star characters. To have an openly gay canon star couple could result in loss of sales because not everyone likes yaoi/yuri. There are some exceptions like Yuri on Ice but for a series like that, it was already made pretty clear from the start that it would have a canon m/m couple and those who don't like it don't have to watch it. But for other series, to make a same sex pairing canon right in the middle or near the end might turn off non yaoi/yuri fans and make them drop the series, which would in turn, make the writers/producers lose money.

Its funny but even though I have a preference for straight pairings, I just adore the Sorey/Mikleo ship because I can't imagine either one of them with anyone else. And I guess its because Mikleo looks so gorgeous and feminine, he may as well be a girl anyway lol. There are straight ships in other fandoms that I absolutely despise like Kirito and Asuna from Sword Art Online.

Tbh when it comes to Sorey’s resolution I think I prefer the game 1 reason, the speech everyone made as they fought Heldalf taking about truly living and accepting pain rather than eradicating it like Heldalf suggests
