This pretty much confirms what I've always been saying about the fender evh - it's a peavey 5150 but with without the need for a tubescreamer.

I do like these both. One thing I'd like to see is getting them to sound the same, then turn around and dial em for their strengths. That'd be interesting to see the tone differences at that point.

I have the 50 watt stealth and a block letter 5150. The stealth is much more plug and play and obviously way more versatile. The Peavey has more of an open roar to it. With a boost, it’s more my flavor, but the stealth is the better overall amp imo.

They both sound amazing. I have a 50 watt Stealth and IMO it's the best amp I've ever played. The one thing about the entire 5150 lineup (Peavey, EVH) is they are all tight as hell, in a good way.

@@Zaydizz30 I've never used it in a gig setting as I'm just a hobbyist bedroom guitarist. I can tell you it's loud as hell and maintains it's tonal characteristics even when cranked. I have a 100 watt Mesa F100 and a 100 watt Marshall DSL and it isn't louder than those two but it can keep up with them. If I had to give my opinion you should absolutely be able to use it in a live setting...it's loud as hell for a 50 watter.

@@Zaydizz30The stealth 50 watt full stack up against the jcm800 full stack are almost the same volume so the stealth keeps up just great ! The stealth even had more bass responses. I compared the stealth to my DSL40 combo but hooked up to the same 412 and they are about the same volume. I also compared the stealth 50 against the peavey 6534+ and that's 120 watts and it's a bit louder but the stealth keeps up pretty good. 7 on master for stealth is like 6 on the peavey so they're close really.

I love the comparison videos of Kyle! Are one of the few that really sound real! Many videos are done with loadboxes or expensive mics but Kyle really got it to the standard setup that has been used in most of the metal recordings, the SM57 + Mesa Recto Cab! I have both amps and as Kyle said, it is just a matter of taste of what you want, you can never go wrong with them!!!

This was the shootout I was waiting for and you delivered on it Kyle!! 🤘🏼😭 I’m an avid fan of the 6505+ (USA of course) and I just recently purchased the stealth… without a doubt they’re both my favorite amps of all time! The mids on the 6505ii ROAR and the stealth is definitely tighter and has attack. Loved this video Kyle. My wallet is definitely gonna take a huge hit when peavey releases the 6505ii lol cheers man 🔥👏🏻

Dear Kyle. I love your stuff, as an aspiring Producer (Still Beginner) this content helps me on gear decisions a lot. Thank You. What I watet to say about this video is its unfortunate these two are not Volume matched at all and you had the master louder on the Stealth so it sound a lot bigger.
@belligerentamateur
@belligerentamateur 2 жыл бұрын
Glad you like the videos man! However, the volumes in the room absolutely were matched, and you have to consider that every amp's volume pot has a different taper, so to reach the same DB level, they will have to be at different settings. This in no way indicates how much volume or headroom an amp has left on the dial, as again, each amp will have different volume tapers. Remember that moving forqard and you'll be good to go!

Kyle, my 50 watt Stealth arrives in 2 days. To say I am excited would be an understatement. So I am spending a cold, lazy day watching Stealth videos. I really like this video because I played through a 5150 II/Boogie 4x12 rig for almost 20 years. About 5 years of that was as a full stack on top of two Boogie 4x12's. So I am very intimately familiar with that tone. This video did more to let me know what to expect out of the Stealth than any other content. Although I am using a different cab now, I still have a good idea what to expect. I am planning on grabbing a good A/B/Y pedal and running my Stealth simultaneously with my MT15. I am hoping the mids overlap in a good way.

I sided with the EVH for most of the video, but once you started dialing the Peavey in to sound more like the EVH I liked the Peavey better. With all at noon I preferred the EVH, and in the green channel I preferred the EVH, but once you dialed them to sound similar I was having a hard time choosing. Both handled actives nearly the same. The whole time it almost sounded like the Peavey wasn't as loud, idk why. I would be happy with either, but in terms of the amp's raw sound I choose the EVH. Although I assume that the 6505II will be at a much lower price point than the EVH considering the 6505 series generally has been in the budget tube price range compared to EVH. Give me either for free and I will be a happy camper though. 😂 Great video.

And that's why I wanted to see these two together. I knew that with the slight changes to the 6505's voice that these two would sound more similar. Peavey kind of did to the new 6505 that EVH did to the Stealth, they cleaned up the mids and added more aggression.

I think we have similar tone preferences. I thought the blue channel sounded better vs the 6505 crunch... right up until the TC boost section. Then at 9:15 you said exactly what I had in mind. Hard to choose with a boost out front and dialed in EQ.

Got to admit I liked the stealth more than I expected to given that I've always felt that the fender 5150s lacked the punchy lower mids (cocked wah) that really defines the 5150 tone. A mid hump in front of the pre amp (a boost) really helped it. I don't see it as a knock that the green channel is not that suited to thrash metal riffs. I have the xxx and really wish it had a true crunch channel instead of two thrash/death metal channels (i love the xxx crunch channel but it isn't a crunch channel)

Hi Kyle, thanks for the great video and all your awesome content in general. Lots of fantastic tips and advice, very helpful and inspiring. I am thinking about buying one of two amplifiers: EVH 5150 III Stealth 50-watt or Peavey 6505 1992 Original 120-watt. I'm leaning towards the 6505 but I'm afraid it will be too strong for rehearsals. Do you think I will be able to get that classic, big brutal and wild sound of the 6505 without drowning out others, including drums? The line-up is 2 guitars, bass, drums, the room is about 256 Square Feet. I will be very grateful for the hint and advice. 🙂

Hey Kyle! Im the same about 5153 (50w original) red CH. My solution to make it more lush, useable, less blurry.... a JJ 12DW7 in V2. Ive tried various 12at7's au7's etc, but as odd as it may seem the 12dw7 wins. It reduces the gain & fattens the tone a little. Still the Blue Channell is the winner, but at least I can USE the red. I mostly use Tung sols for the rest of the preamp tubes. I did a lot of experimenting.

Is this mostly an issue with the 50w? I remember the blurriness/ squishiness/ high compression when I owned a 50w, although I still loved that amp. Now I've had the regular 6L6 100w 5150iii for a few months, and I don't experience any of those things on channel 3. It feels/ sounds a lot closer to a peavey 5150/6505... more open and full, without the need of a boost to stay tight/ percussive on the low end. Honestly, can't go wrong with any of the 5150/6505 variants!

@mixc8 , I would take the 50 watt Stealth over any of the Peavey 5150 models I ever owned. It really is a better amplifier overall. I wonder what pricing will be on the new 6505 II? I like the way the 6505 II sounds, I like that is has the full 100 watts (for dealing with loud drummers) and it doesn't have the Stealth's over the top gain all the time, so it seems like it would be more versatile for more styles of music. I like the new Peavey look with the big numbers and the modern slanted peavey logo down to the right. I finally tried the 5150 50w 6L6 (white) vs the Stealth 50w at a nearby guitar Center, using an EVH 112 (although I prefer full 4X12's). I didn't like the plastic-y feel of the knobs, and those silver knobs on the Stealth would be hard to see in a dark room or on a dark stage. I actually preferred the Stealth 50W over the standard 50w and actually liked it's red channel for the singing sustain that it offers. Both were a little mushy and loose in the low end when playing fast low E string stuff or chugging. I like my Katana Artist Mk II (on Boss' "Brown" variation), because it stays tighter in the low end, and their Waza "Greenback" has a nice clear sound, with a high 100w power handling. I wouldn't mind plugging an EVH 5150 head into the Waza speaker to see if that tightens up the low end. @Kyle, have you ever tried the Waza 4X12 cab?

Paul says "hey that's pretty cool" and the customer says "yeah but it's really old and no one has uses it in 30 years and I was going to throw it out, you want it?" To me, the Peavey 6505 II has more bite comparing to the EVH 5150 III. I think the EVH will sound better with a 12AT7 as a first tube preamp instead of a 12AX7, to get the gain much more usable.

I feel like the stealth owns the peavey until you switched to the red channels, then the peavey eats the stealth for breakfast. That 6505 red channel remains epic. The red channel on the stealth is almost too tight and defined for me, if that makes any sense. The peavey is able to stay tight and tracks well but sounds fuller to my ears. But again, just my opinion.

I have a 6505+ and the stealth. Idk about the stealth it seems great but something about it is too clean to me? Like even on the red channel I feel like there’s less grunt and sizzle than the 6505+ but it is a good bit tighter and have a slightly better clean tone. I 1000% like the size of the stealth more. But when I’m playing one of my big amps (not lunchbox sized) I tend to just jump on the 6505+ because it’s easy, simple, and brutal. I don’t see going from a plus to a 6505 2 as being a benefit like going from the plus to the invective with all its extra features.

They both sound killer. It’s too bad Peavey is Made in China now, or else it wouldn’t even be a question on what one I’d buy. Call me old fashioned, but as soon as I see MIC on a piece of gear I’m immediately looking for something else. If I’m going to spend that much on amp, it’s country of origin is critically important. That’s said, they both sound great.

Do you have a RAT pedal ? How about the sm57 mic ? Do you use a mixer? Powered Monitors? Do you have a drum machine ? Looper pedal ? Any pedal ? Chromatic tune machine ? Celestion speakers ? Yeah, all made in China and I bet you use it with no issues. Don't get me wrong, I don't like China due to many reasons but the amount of gear that is made in China is enumerable. Check out Indonesia world 🌎 factory guitars like schecter and Ltd, Dean, ibanez and the many other great guitars being built in Indonesia are amazing !

I disagree I prefer it to be a 3 channel amp. 2nd channel is great for boosted/overdrive pedals like you said. But the 3rd channel is amazing. It has a sound that you can't replicate and in my opinion, sounds much better than boosting it. Although I do love boosting the 2nd channel and that tone. It just sounds natural while also has a ton of gain while boosted doesn't sound natural to me. At least in my opinion from listening to mine and listening to amps with a boost pedal. The third channel sounds killer

Dunno about this specific Peavey, but the block letter needs some volume to get in the sweet spot. The EVH amps sound great whisper quiet and even have a headphone jack!
@PippPriss
@PippPriss 2 жыл бұрын
You can use an attenuator for that - tubes have two sweet spots - around the 30% mark and another around the 70% mark. For high gain stuff, you want to rather hit that 30% mark, because the power amp saturation will muddy everything up. However, another issue is introduced when using an attenuator - some highs are gone and you cant drive the cab with the volume it needs to sound good. Solution for both issues - get yourself an reactive loadbox - it preserves the highs and acts as a full cab replacement, whereas most attenuators still need some kind of load connected (like the speaker itself) after the attenuator. Check out Kristan "Kohle" Kohlmannslehner (Kohlekeller Studios) here on KZfaq, he has a great video around that topic!

@@PippPriss I watch his channel. It's great! The issue I have is I want to play through a cab at home , want that big amp thump and full saturation of the tubes but at quiet bedroom volumes. I have a 1 watt dsl head but I don't think it has any headroom to take pedals well.

A reactive load attenuator is essential to owning a tube amp. The Two Notes Torpedo is a great unit.
@belligerentamateur
@belligerentamateur 2 жыл бұрын
Not at all, all the gain from these amps comes from the preamp section alone and the power sections are built to run as clean with as much headroom as possible. So you can literally get all the distortion characteristics from the preamp without having to push the power amp by any means. Granted because of the physics of speakers and speaker cabinets, louder will always make it sound livelier, because you'll be moving air inside the room that you're in with the speakers and getting reaction from that, but again, all the gain comes from the preamp section so you can literally run it as quiet as possible and still get all the preamp gain you could ever want
