Update: Jan. 30, 2024 - Just received a message that our dear friend and three time Tony Award Winner Hinton Battle transitioned today. He will be truly missed and thank you Hinton for blesssing the World with your remarkable talents and gifts. Rest in Paradise!
Pebbles grants an exclusive interview with 3 times Tony Award Winner/Choreographer Hinton Battle as he fills in for producer/host Keith O'Derek for Upfront. This interview was filmed in 1986 before Pebbles worked with Recording group TLC.
This was Pebbles first ever television interview!
Upfront was a mainstay show for showcasing talent.
Makeda at Debra Baum PR firm served as her publicist.

upoutmyfaceb0y I'm gonna defend Pebbs 2the end, my mom was/is quite beautiful, so I always get that pretty women arent ever taken seriously, folk think they just lay on their backs, or theyre mean untrustworthy villians, or somne crazy combo of both.? Why do people think that?, everybody beautiful outwardly isnt Alexis from Dynasty! Lol, just like All unattractive people arent all mean & stupid... btw, women need 2 quit hatin on each other when its a dude usually responsible 4 the discord.

@@cherylsaliens5451 ... Defend all you like. All you talk about is her "looks," and you filter the criticism leveled at her based on her physical beauty. But it's what's *inside* that counts. And you are obviously so shallow that you can't see that. Pebbles is a blatantly narcissistic predator who will use anyone to advance her wealth and standing. Ask any of the ex-husbands or musical acts or the current followers of her "evangelistic" efforts that she has used as ladders for that purpose. "Everyone is jealous of a pretty woman"...? lol... that is so small, sixth-grade, childish, and insubstantial... You need better priorities, chica. Put down the "Love and Hip-Hop" and expand your maturity.

This interview is not from 1986. This interview is from 1987. Pebbles debut album came out in November of 1987 so they certainly won't be talking about a debut album in 86. She had a single in the summer of 87 called love/hate which was featured in the Beverly Hills cop 2 soundtrack. Gilfriend was released the following October as the lead single off her debut album in 87

Pebbles is so honest, it's hilarious. "I don't like acting, I don't dancing, I don't like modeling." Janet Jackson, for example, always gives user friendly and polished answers and comes off rather boring. Allegedly, she was only 22 years old at the time, but gives very adult answers and her energy level is low. Long day in the studio, perhaps.

"so honest" .... hilarious, indeed! Her entire career has been an exercise in 'hiding in plain sight.' She couldn't act or dance or model because she'd have to really expose her inner self. Sister Perri can never, EVER do that. She is ugly and rotten inside, as beautiful as she is outside. P.S. I have never seen the TLC movie; these are just things I have come to know over the years as an observer.

One of the things that struck me about this video was when Pebbles said she didn't get much of any support from her family as far as her musical aspirations growing up. But I bet when her album became a big hit in the 1987-1988 period her family was coming from everywhere you could think of either asking for money, wanting to bask in her fame, and acting like they supported her musical aspirations from the jump.

This is November/December 1986 I figure, meaning she's just 22. She actually made the Mercedes Boy video well before this interview and then remixed it for the 7" and 12" releases.

Always had a big 'ol crush on Pebbles. Still do🥰 On another note did anyone recognize Hinton Battle? He was in the 5th season episode of Quantum Leap, Part 3 of the Evil Leaper. He was Zoey's replacement hologram known as Thames! (why'd they name him after a river in the UK?)

This interview may have been filmed in 1986, but I'm thinking it was filmed in the spring of 1987 because of the cut-away video clips of the other artists. All those tracks ("I feel good all over" "looking for a new love") came out in the spring. Also, "Girlfriend" was added to Pebbles' album in 1987 as a last track. So, while her album had clearly not been released before this interview, it was probably nearing completion. Notice the version of "Do Me Right" is not the final mix that appears on the album.

Man, when you're just coming up as a recording artist it's hard work. And if these recording companies don't know your worth yet they either treat you like shit, work you hard, or they make sure they get a return on their investment in you as a new artist just in case you flop. Pebbles was a new artist on MCA when this video came out, so you can just imagine the stress she was under in pre-production and post production of her debut album.
