In this video we take a look at rebuilding my Pedaltrain-2 board with a serious upgrade via The GigRig QuarterMaster switcher and GigRig Three2one switcher/pre-amp. The GigRig QMX-8 was chosen for it's simplicity yet gratifying control to allow stacking of pedals or automatically switching between different pedals.
I'm not affiliated with Pedaltrain, GigRig or any of the pedal companies. Just a guitar player who has turned into a bit of a gear nerd thanks to That Pedal Show on KZfaq.
In this video you can pick up a few tips for changing out velcro without a mess left behind, thoughts on layout or switching which might give you some ideas.
Then I plug into a vintage silverface Fender Super Reverb (non-master volume) and crank it up for some noodling with MojoTone '58 Quiet Coil pickups and then a guitar I made which feature Lollar P-90's. This guitar was also appeared in Vintage Guitar Magazine February 2016 issue.

I misspoke in the video about the first guitar. The pickups are MojoTone ‘58 Quiet Coils for Stratocaster.

I've reached a similar situation with my own pedalboard and have been considering the Quartermaster QMX. So finding your video was really great timing. Great tip about using a heat gun on the Velcro.

Thank you for the message. I’ve made the mistake of just pulling the Velcro off and it left lots and lots of adhesive which takes a while to clean with Naphtha. Glad you came across the video. I have no affiliation with GigRig obviously but I really.....really love their products and the QMX makes life so much simpler for my board. The switches themselves are great and being able to stack or switch loops with a simple push button is great.

Turkee G - thank you, yes Dan and Mick should be getting a percentage of all pedal sales new and used as far as I’m concerned. Love their show and have learned a lot. I really really like the QM and how much easier using pedals is for me now. Glad you liked the P90’s. I use Lollars in all my builds and love them.

Ah, fellow gear nerd. I've been through so many approaches and each one seems a betrayal of the last one. I got a gigrig but quickly felt oddly stymied by the options, then moved to two QMX using a smaller one for all effects allowing 8~ dirt/fuzz pedals. _Then_ realised that most of my drive pedals just sounded the same - the Bonamassa syndrome where his four boutique amps and pile of pedals didn't differ much in actual usage - so have just moved back to a single qmx10 and forcing myself to jettison pedals I don't use but thought I wanted. Univibe, octafuzz, my poor POG. It's still a massive complex board by the single-pedal standards of what I had five years ago. You've got some great tones and pedals, I envy the KOT badly. Sweet bends and vibrato too. Though I do have a tonebone head switcher and a Hot Rod deluxe that I never quite got happy with . . . anyway, great to watch a fellow tinkerer.

Ah I feel your pain! Thanks for the kind words. I couldn’t agree more about overdrive pedals. I’ve purchased way too many and settled on the KOT which I love and along the way found that many of the OD pedals sound so close it doesn’t make sense to have several on a board. Thinking I’ve got the tones dialed in perfectly at home then they sound different at the gig which is to be expected but...at a gig they sound even more alike. I learned I don’t like Klon style pedals and yet ended up with a Wampler Tumnus Deluxe that excels when stacked after the KOT. Tone tinkering is part of the fun though.

Thanks! Glad you liked it. The red boxes took a while to edit but it’s worth it to see specifically which pedal is on. I think you’re gonna love the QMX-4. My pedal board is way more than I would ever need but TheGigRig makes it so easy to use.

The folks at GigRig can probably make a block diagram of what you’d want if you let them know your pedals and what you’re trying to achieve. They’re great to work with.

Thanks Joshua - Yes Zinky amps are awesome. That one needs a little attention, hopefully it's just a microphonic tube. I can't promise a video but if I get it on the bench I'll have the camera rolling and we'll see. I ordered it through a local dealer and requested the purple velvet and at that time Bruce made one additional one in purple. Not sure if he ever made more in that color or not, it might be one of two made.

Yep, I have several Keeley pedals and some variations of the Tube Screamers he modded back in the day. The fact they wanted to fix that pedal still surprises me. It brightened up the tone too which I was not accustomed to and not sure I’ve adapted to but it’s a quality product and I could probably get by with a 4 or 6 myself. Lots of good products and good companies out there which is a benefit to all the players.

Hi there, thanks for the video! I'm about to do a pedal board rebuild(I have a. Kelley katana and quartermaster too) and I was wondering what was the reason you chose to leave the Katana out of the quartermaster, until the end of the chain? I would have thought clean boost is good after the tuner / compressor before the drive section.
@bbmade
@bbmade Жыл бұрын
I can’t remember for sure but I’m guessing I didn’t want to use a loop on the Quartermaster for a boost and, I definitely don’t like a boost pedal into drive pedals. I prefer to boost their signals instead so a boost pedal is last. Most of the time, if I use a boost it’s to push an amp into break up. Sometimes I use a boost to increase volume for a lead but most of the time I just use my guitars volume to go from rhythm to lead volumes. I also never use compressors. All of that info is only my personal preferences of course, it’s no better or worse that anyone else’s approach. Hope that helps, thanks for the comment 👍

Hello guy,great and very interesting video...........just one question:what kind of patch cables do you use????..........Cheerful greetings.
@bbmade
@bbmade 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the comment! I make patch cables under the Tone Tonics brand so all of these are my own. I color code the different lengths for the ones I sell so if you have a pile of cables on the floor as a pedal board rebuild occurs you can quickly sort them by the heat shrink colors. All of the patch cables I make use Mogami 2319 cable. They are available in my Reverb shop and very soon on my new website. reverb.com/shop/bbmade Thanks again for the comment!

I do still use it even though I haven’t been gigging regularly. It’s simple, easy to use/configure and it’s built really well. The switches are outstanding. For anyone who wants to reduce the pedal board dance but doesn’t want to sit and program things, this is great.

How many pedals can we put in this switching system, is it limited to 8 pedals only?
@bbmade
@bbmade 4 жыл бұрын
Yes within the available loops. They have a 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 version. You can run pedals before or after the loops too but don’t get the switcher functionality. I like to run my tuner before the looper. I want a 6 version for my medium board.
@mbach1187
@mbach1187 2 жыл бұрын
are you certain that tuner is not changing tone at all? I know its true bypass but I think you probably should do a comparison with it running thru looper.
@bbmade
@bbmade 2 жыл бұрын
I am sure there’s a dramatic difference in sound before the Quartermaster versus after. Night and day difference. Am I sure about the tuner? No, but it’s not worth the extra time to compare for me personally. Also, I no longer use that tuner and the board has evolved since I made this video. I certainly chase tone down rabbit holes so I get the sentiment.

@bbmade
@bbmade 5 жыл бұрын
colaboytje: I bought mine used on Reverb. I had a high gain version as well in purple but decided I really didn’t need the extra gain. I’m a sucker for gold painted anything so kept this one. I don’t know how used pricing compares to being on the list for a new one.
@SteveUnderhill
@SteveUnderhill 5 жыл бұрын
Hey so I have a bit more experience with this than most I think. My first KoT I bought was B stock at Mike’s workshop. Living within range of the man himself has its perks. I already had been on the list at that point and about 20 months later my name came up, so I gave in and picked up another one. Current pricing if you wait your turn (or buy b stock from him in person) is $265. Used to be 10-15 less but components went up. Hi gain is $10 per side, extra jacks (for inserting effects in between stages) and toggle switch are $50 each. I don’t know how much you paid on reverb but typically I see no or few frills KoTs between 400 and 550. Sometimes someone gets frisky and puts up a four jack or toggle added pedal for 600+. Check out his website to see what the wait status is, and that should give you a good idea where you stand. Finally, don’t expect it to speed up anytime soon. It’s slowly gotten longer over the last 2-3 years, and since the diodes and caps he uses in the KoT and the Prince have been discontinued, it’s not going to get any easier on them to try and keep up. It is definitely worth the wait; I don’t use anything else on my board for drive!

Just ordered a QMX6 myself btw. I already have a loopy-2 and I really like the sound of everything through that, so I am hoping the QMX is about the same basic technology. I used to use first a Carl Martin combinator 2. It sounds really good and has a few nice exstra features, but it's inherently buffered and not good with fuzz pedals. So for a while I used the Octaswitch where you can select buffer on/off. It too has nice features, but the sound is colder to my ears somehow. The loopy-2 does not have that issue so fingers crossed for the QMX :D
@bbmade
@bbmade 6 жыл бұрын
What I noticed after wiring up this board is everything got a tiny bit brighter since before everything was wired up in series so it made sense. I’m still getting used to it when I play live but absolutely love the QMX. I have a Carl Martin Octa-switch III but it took up a lot of space. Let us know what you think when you get it!
@whynottalklikeapirat
@whynottalklikeapirat 6 жыл бұрын
Ok - so I received it a few days ago but I had to go away so I only got to play with it a little - but first impression, just from A/B'ing with my loopy 2 is that it's probably not the same circuitry. Just bypassing or going through a single loop with no pedals in it - sounds fuller, more immediate and natural in the loopy 2 - especially around the mids and a little louder than the QMX6. (I am running the QMX at 9v/300ma from a Carl Martin Pro Power - so that should be sufficient for full operation). So in that immediate sense I still prefer the loopy 2. However this was at a fairly low volume - so I have yet to see what that all translates into at a higher volume. That said - I liked the sound just going through the QMX with no pedals fine. It reminds me a little of the combinator 2 but without the buffered, slightly glassy vibe. It certainly does not have the "cold cut" that I associate with the Octaswitch, so I am happy about that. But I am going to test it with pedals next and run it at volume at rehearsal, and we'll see. I am not sure what causes the difference between the QMX and the loopy 2. Both have flip-flop, and the signal path in terms of relays employed, when running a single loop should be about the same, unless something else is taking place in there to enable flipflop vs. on off for more loops. I guess that's a bit of added complexity that may load the signal a little, what do I know ... Cheers

@@Fran-lc4wk - I always have a tuner and it’s usually the first pedal. I have a looper pedal but don’t use it much. Seeing videos of what people can do with them is really cool so if you like using one I’d have that too. I’d have to think about where I’d want it in the chain so it’s either always a clean loop or would a dirt pedal into it sound ok? That I don’t know.

No I’ve tried compressors over the years but don’t like them. It takes away the feel for me between myself, the guitar and the amp. I like the dynamics of quiet subtle picking and really laying into the note. I’d love to hear from people that like compressors though, maybe I’m missing something important.
