We test smokeless powders in the Pedersoli 1874 Sharps Q Down Under. It is a replica of the rifle used in the movie Quigley Down Under. The movie rifle was chambered in .45-110 our rifle is chambered in .45-70.

Great video quality. I began my 45/70 experience in the 1980's, buying a used Shiloh #2 sporting rifle, after reading Mike Venturino's early writings about black powder silhouette shooting. I bought the Lyman 457125 mold and used SR4759 and later, 5744 as well as Pyrodex. I found that bullet quality was the most important factor to achieve really good results. Just love this cartridge and rifle. Your shooting skills are whole lot better than mine but I do occasionally print a sub MOA group. Keep up the great work.

Thank you for the kind words, they are greatly appreciated!! I really like those Shiloh rifles they are very nice and fit and finish is top notch. Mike has been quite an inspiration to me as well I really enjoy reading his work and he has helped me more times than I can count. He even cast some of the bullets that we used in this video!! I agree in full bullet quality is key in order to achieve accurate results. I must admit I have a newfound respect for these old rifles and those that carry them. I am by no means an expert with these Sharps rifles and I have no doubt that I am the limiting factor when it comes to accuracy. Just discovered your channel and am impressed to say the least. I shoot a similar Pedersoli rifle and have only used black powder and some Pyrodex loads thus far [shooting this rifle 5 years now]. I don't know why smokeless powder has me so concerned after watching your video I am leaning over to try it just to ease up on the cleaning after the odd pot shot or whatever... [Really not hard to clean but is a must do with Black powder] I guess the horror stories of ringed chambers etc. put the fear in me. Great information listed with powder, primer, bullet weight and type along with visual results made it a very interesting watch.

Thank you very much for the kind words, we are glad to hear that you enjoy the content we are producing! We do have plans to do a follow up video using black powder as well so keep an eye out for that in the future. I have heard of such concerns so far this rifle has held up very very well with the smokeless powders we tried. However I will say that unique powder and similar powders seem to contribute to ringed chambers but I need to do more testing to verify that of course I do not want to ring the chamber on this rifle either! So it may be some time before that ever happens! Hopefully by the end of this year we will be doing the Black Powder video but we shall see what other projects pop up and become available. My own first experience with the 45-70 was in a trapdoor Springfield. Perhaps the poster child for minding your pressures. My experience with Pedersoli involved a rolling block rifle with a heavy full round 32" barrel. Excellent sights, similar to yours and a 1.5 - 2 moa shooter with me at the trigger. Good, solid, quality guns. I don't think that the use of 5744 powder can be encouraged enough in the 45-70 and similar cartridges. I've found nothing to be so close to an ideal powder for the purpose. I found that part of the fun of shooting with these excellent sights was experimenting with different aperatures and front sight inserts. There is really a lot to love about these classic firearms.
@HandloaderTV
@HandloaderTV 3 жыл бұрын
Indeed you certainly have to keep the pressures low with one of those. That is really good to know, it's good to hear that others also had good experiences with Pedersoli. We were quite impressed with them after this video. I agree in full it is a go to of mine and it just simply works wonders I don't think there is anything quite as good as 5744 powder for the 45-70. Indeed we played with apparatuses and front sights along with the adjustments as well. There is so much to play with this these rifles and what is not to love! Thanks for the information, it looks that I need to change my shooting habit and reload 45-70s with black powder substitutes such as Pyrodex I have been using commercial 45-70 by Hornady (LEVERevolution) in my Uberti (1885 high wall) and Chiappa (1874 Q. Down Under). I do not shoot these two rifles often, not sure if caused any structural issues? Chiappa is very specific about not using commercial cartridges! Uberty says: Always use only good condition, undamaged, clean, dry, original high quality, commercially manufactured ammunition of a reputable company which is appropriate to the gun’s caliber. Manufacturers design guns and ammunition within exacting engineering safety limits. Since handloads are often outside those limits, they are not to be used.
@HandloaderTV
@HandloaderTV 2 жыл бұрын
You are very welcome thank you for taking the time to watch the video!! I personally am a big fan of just plain old black powder for these old guns as well and that is what I would recommend for your Chiappa especially considering I do not have much experience with them. I know that would be perfectly safe in that gun provided it is not damaged. A good gunsmith would be able to help you in that area a lot more than I could. I imagine if it says not to use commercially loaded ammunition then I would heed that advice, even though it seems a bit strange to me that they would put that in there. The Uberti should be perfectly fine with Commercially loaded ammo so long as it is not +P or above the pressure guidelines given by the manufacturer usually around 28,000 PSI. Thanks again and good shooting to you!! --Jeremiah

I think it's more the shooter, not the rifle. Particularly if using black powder. Someone like Tiger Woods will out play most of us at golf using a baseball bat and banged up ball. The Shiloh fit and finish is a touch better. In my view. Others can differ. Is it worth the wait time? Well, time passes anyway and in the end you'll have the prestige of the Shiloh. Is it worth it? That's up to you.
@HandloaderTV

@@normanbraslow7902 Jeremiah is certainly an accomplished shooter and Handloader. I do think the Rifle plays a roll in the accuracy when testing methods are consistent IE Tiger woods plays with a baseball bat then a 9 iron the whole game then a wedge the whole game etc. However I do understand your point and there is certainly truth there. I would agree the Shiloh rifles do have higher quality wood and color case hardening and fit and finish can be more consistent however the fit and finish on this Pedersoli was pretty impressive. That is why we make these videos so folks can make educated decisions on their purchases and handloading habits. Thank you for watching and thank you for your feedback.

Handloader TV All of the Sharps makes, Shiloh, C. Sharps and Pedersoli, are costly, so whichever one gets, it's an investment. Do you know where Pedersoli gets the wood? Is it the high quality European variety? What about C. Sharps? For some people that might make a difference. I know Shiloh uses walnut from Missouri. I saw some of the choice stocks in the process of finishing in the Shiloh factory, and they were incredible.
@HandloaderTV
@HandloaderTV 3 жыл бұрын
@@normanbraslow7902 That is true we leave that decision entirely up to the viewer. We do our best to show our results in as much of an unbiased point of view and focus on the raw results we receive. We understand that everyone has different preferences in manufacturing, quality, accuracy fit and finish, and even brands. One day we would like to cover the C sharps and Shiloh, Sharps rifles as well. We do know Pedersoli uses a lot of American Walnut for their stocks however as far as sources I am not sure at this time. I do know they buy the wood and cure it themselves and it is usually at least a 1 year turn around from purchase to the time it is placed on a rifle. C. Sharps searches across the country for walnut suitable for their rifles and each piece is hand inspected similar to Pedersoli but in less of a quantity.

Those are actually the same groups we show us shooting all of the targets in real time minus some time taken out between shots while I adjust my bags or get my sights linned up. Then we go back to the bench and review those same loads we shot on the range. So what you are seeing at those two time stamps are actually the same loads just me shooting it in real time and then me reviewing it and talking about how it performed and giving you a breakdown of the load and the standard deviation and velocity we got with that load. Just found your channel. Nice job. I too have a Pedersoli 1874 Sharps in 45-70. It’s a 30 inch Hunter model. I shoot smokeless and black powder. I also have a reproduction Rolling Block, High Wall and 1886 Lever Action. I have one other 45-70 1874 Sharps from Cimarron that’s a 34 inch Billy Dixon model but have not shot it but two or three rounds before having to send it back for repairs. Been waiting months for it’s return. Frustrating! I personally don’t believe it’s necessary to crimp the case regardless if you’re shooting smokeless or black powder in a single shot rifle. I’ve hit 18x24 in steel at 500 yds with no crimp. I’ve had good results with 5744 and Swiss 1.5 along with Montana Bullet Works 535 gr Lyman Postell. Suggest you find the null point on your barrel to see if it improves accuracy.

Thank you very much for the kind words we greatly appreciate all the feedback! We do have plans to do a video showcasing black powder in the 45-70 we just haven't decided if we want to use this rifle again or go to a different one. That does not sound good at all hopefully they get that taken care of for you, I know that the repair times are longer since the guns are made overseas. I think the crimp matters more with smokeless powder than black powder however, in speaking with a lot of competitive shooters they all recommenced crimp with smokeless powders. I did play around with shooting 10 shot groups from positions from the sticks. It didn't seem to make that much of a difference in accuracy in this particular rifle at 100 yards. However, I did try to keep it consistent in the video and you'll see me adjust it from time to time to ensure it is consistent. Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment! --Jeremiah

Excellent video. I have one of these Q down under models as well as a Shiloh in 45-100. I use black powder only, but your video has interested me to try a little AA 5744 in the Q. I was curious About the pressure you quoted. I opened the owners manual an found that the rifle is proofed to 30% over 29,007 psi at the government prof facility in Italy "ICP". The 25,000 psi map you quote is for all black powder cartridges other than the 45-70. For example, YOU WOULD NOT load a 50-140 with a max load of FFFg black powder!!!!! I don't know what the pressure would be, but it probably be well over the 29,007 psi map established for the Q. The design pressure map for the Q in 45-70 is based on the higher pressure factory hunting loads, IE Buffalo Bore etc which I "assume" is at the 28,000 SAMMI limit. Thanks for the great videos Jeramiah!

Thank you very much we appreciate you watching and commenting. It certainly has some merit in these rifles however I too prefer black powder and we will be doing a full video on that in the future. I appreciate you pointing that out upon further inspection you are correct! I was a little off in my 25,000 PSI/CUP it does state you can shoot up to 29,007 PSI/CUP loads which I personally find a little confusing given those two terms CUP and PSI are not interchangeable. I agree in full the use of FFFg powder should not even be a consideration in the 50-140 although I must admit I am at a loss to even guess what kind of pressures it would produce. 3,000 PSI is not much of a difference and I would assume since they are all built on the same action they would all be able to handle the same 25,000 PSI/CUP apparently I assumed wrong and I appreciate you pointing that out. I assume Pedersoli did this so that factory loaded SAAMI spec ammunition could be used in their sharps rifles. Any factory ammo loaded within SAAMI Spec should be just fine out the the Q down under however I would not expect stellar accuracy. Due to the bullet weight, hardness and other factors that most factory ammo is loaded to.

@@HandloaderTV I would recommend before quoting or reloading any ammo that the SAAMI VOLUNTARY PERFORMANCE STANDARDS SAAMI Z299. 4 2015 is referenced for those particular cartridge's. Especially the 45-70 because there are so many rifles that shoot it, and a trap door will not take the same punishing pressures as a Marlin, or Modern sharps. I don't want to beat any one up. But its a good practice. The ( CUPS ) Copper Units Crushed, is kinda going by the way side and measuring with transducers ( PSI) are being used. But this information or SAAMI Specs is all volunteered information from the manufacturers and says my produced has been tested to meet this specifics. PPU was selling ammo that exceeded SAAMI pressure and about destroyed one of my rifles. @@Gunner-73 Brian I appreciate the comment and that is good advice for sure. I do look into not only the SAAMI specs but various other loading manuals along with our own notes from the lab or pressure tested data. I choose to reference the 3 most commonly used pressure guidelines for the cartridge to keep it as simple as possible to avoid any confusion. All the data is double checked and if there is any doubt I will always air on the side of caution and use the lower pressure figures. such as the case here with the Pedersoli. We do our very best to keep things in an easily digestible format for the viewer while keeping safety as a number one priority. The last thing I would ever want is for someone to misunderstand and load to the wrong pressure. That is terrible to hear about your gun! all the more reason to handload I suppose. That is true the copper units of pressure (CUP) does seem to be less and less common these days however many European gun manufacturers still use CUP as their pressure standard. Pedersoli included so that is why I referenced CUP. As I am sure you know PSI and CUP are not directly comparable. So we did purchase the Soule style sight separately and they are not cheap but I will say based off of our experience with them it is worth the money and with practice I think you could shoot 1 hole groups at 100 yards.They are a bit tricky to install though and we actually had Dave Fink from Finks Custom Gunssmithing install ours and as you could see he did a fantastic job! I assume you are talking either the saddle ring, there is a small bar located on the left side of the rifle if you were looking down the sights it would be at the 9 o'clock position (not shown in video). That is a saddle ring for attaching a sling to the rifle and in some cases I have seen them used to attach rifles to saddles as well, although given the size of this rifle that seems quite impractical. If you are referring to circular disk located at the 12 o'clock position when looking down the barrel from behind the rifle that is the Sight aperture which is adjustable to allow various amounts of light through the sight and provide the most clear and crisp sight picture possible. @@HandloaderTV so here's the thing. People always respond more strongly to negative emotions. That means if people are generally neutral on it you will see on average more negative comments. Also if you had an equal number of positive and negative comments you would remember the negative ones more. It really does take a toll on people who work a lot to be in the public sphere. You have to actively remind yourself that the ratio is inevitably skewed. If you reach blows up you are going to see a whole lot more negativity and until you armor your emotions against it it will beat you up. So I wouldn't be sad if somebody just downloads and says nothing. If somebody has meaningful feedback and correction that's useful. I have old videos that I did and nothing I've done is anywhere near your production quality, and I will get comments that say nothing more than " boring." There are other comments that will say but what about this bit of information or that. I value the ladder. My videos are mostly made for technical information so if somebody finds them boring that's sort of irrelevant but if somebody else finds them useful or counterproductive that's highly relevant. Your videos are a combination of your subjective opinion about firearm and a practical guide to a few reloading recipes, and an example of the better end of what performance can be expected. @@wilmamcdermott3065 I am more of a horseman these days, most of my time is occupied working up loads or working my horses. There was a time when I would have answered yes to that question, sadly those days are mostly in the past now but I can't complain I love what I do and I still have time to tinker with my horses and incorporate them into my shooting from time to time is always a blast. Keep an eye out for our upcoming video on the Ruger made Marlin 1895 SBL. --Jeremiah

I have loaded 1000's of rounds and done tons of testing with my 45-70 Marlin and found that it doesn't like going over 500g bullets.
