Mary Aitken, MD, is a board-certified pediatrician with a focus on childhood injuries and prevention. She has received research funding from the National Institutes of Health, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and other agencies to support her studies of injury prevention related to safe sleep, toy safety, car seats, and all-terrain vehicles. Here, she discusses her work in guiding and educating families and peers to provide spaces and situations that minimize risk for children so they can satisfy their curiosity and explore their world in a developmentally appropriate manner.
Aitken is professor and chair of pediatrics at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston and serves as physician in chief at Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital.
