It was me. The drill is working well on the 3 cell RC battery.

Yes, thanks. Unfortunately I am at the stage where words and names hide themselves in my memory, or swap places and come out at the wrong time. The number of times I am editing videos and realise I have got it wrong is frustrating. Sometimes I can overdub, other times I miss it until after I have uploaded.

I have a 9.6v Makita drill from 1990. I replaced the batteries with three 18650s from an old laptop battery. This gives you 12.6 v fully charged. Works great and I have been using the drill for a few years. I removed the circuit board from the charger and just soldered 2 leads that extend out of the charger and hook up to my bench power supply at 12.6volts. The charge rate I use is 750 milli amp. This system will work for years to come.

I build my own packs with a spot welder. I have changed over old power tools, electric shavers, dust busters and a scooter. I had many Black & Decker/Craftsman VersaPak tools, converted the cylindrical batteries to Li-Ion 18650's. One DeWalt battery I opened to reclaim Li-Ion 18650's had Li-Fe cells 18650 size, these are 3.3 volts each. With these I make 7 & 10 volt batteries, this keeps you close to what the tool wants, tools with strong motors need cells with higher c ratings. Some packs I add a BMS others just a balance lead. I charge everything with a $25 hobby charger

I think I will have to buy one of those little spot welders designed just for this sort of job 👍

You can just solder leads to the batteries.

@@christophernalbone6299 Yes, you can. I have done it myself, but you risk damaging the cell if you take too long. That is the advantage of the spot welder. If you plan to do lots of them, then a spot welder is probably worth adding to your tool collection.

That was one of the very first battery drills on the market. Incredibly popular at the time. Tradies wanted them to save having to wind out a heavy extension cord and then locate a power point. That must be.. what,,,50 years old?

I am sure you mentioned those NiCads are pretty expensive to buy. I recon that is because they are doing away with NiCad batteries. Trying a LiPo will work but that little model spark gap Tesla Coil I made some years back had problems running on a 12-volt LiPo battery. The battery began to heat up very quickly. I think the C rating was too small so it could not handle the current it was pulling. I think the "C" rating has something to do with how much amps can be pulled. I decided to use a 19-volt laptop charger to run it and it was fine. 👍👍👍 I noticed someone thought this was simulating. 🤣🤣

@mikeflight9 Yes, the current draw is probably the issue if I tried to use vape batteries, but it would be fun to do it, just for "because I can" 😊 Sorting out a balance charger for it would be an issue. If I used vape batteries, I would parallel them up to increase the capacity. It's just one of those projects in the back of my mind.
