Testing out the log peeling disc on black cherry, red oak and sugar maple using the 9" angle grinder attachment. Check out how the bark gets removed from these logs as compared to red pine.

Wow, that thing means business. Sure beats trying to take the bark off with a knife or a spade, although I rarely debark logs (only doing chainsaw milling once in a rare while). Thanks for the video and take care.

Good evening Sandy yes there will be a difference on the species of every type of wood the bark was a lot thicker on certain type but it still did the job just look at the difference of different type of wood with the mill but to go and do all the logs you put on the mill that would be major work I think it will be easier to sharpen the blades lol but to give it a certain look to the wood to be use to a special project definatly a good way to remove that bark. Teasing watch for the police on your trail your speeding again lol have a great evening

The Chop Shop was a really cool project to follow along with, and I think it turned out great. If I remember correctly, a 16' pine log took about the same time to de-bark as some of these smaller hardwood log pieces.
@sawingwithsandy

The hardwood pieces sure did take a good bit longer time. The red pine was real quick to debark for sure

That works great Sandy. I watched your initial video also. I don’t have a need to debark entire logs. I’m only looking to debark the blade line for my sawmill. I’m going to try a Timber Tuff debarker that attaches to a chainsaw. I’ll let you know how that works.

Keep me updated for sure. I"ve thought about a grinder mounted to a saw blade for just that thin strip of the sawmill blade . I'm not sure how it would work but I like your idea
@carlmclelland7624
@carlmclelland7624 Ай бұрын
I would say the density and thickness of the bark is the deciding (time) factor, rather the species. With regard to the debarking disk... I AM IMPRESSED! It's natural to assume the pine is faster than the oak, but you're removing twice the bark thickness with the oak. Excellent comparison, Sandy!!
@sawingwithsandy
@sawingwithsandy Ай бұрын
Thanks Carl! It sure goes right through all the bark and with the thickness of the hardwoods it sure did a good job I found as well

Hey Sandy, just a couple of things (I'm only half way through). Have you started using a bit more wide angle, fisheye lens? Just I'm finding it a bit nauseating, couldn't get through one of your recent posts. As 2/3 of the world works on 240v, maybe get Bluetti to give you some stats/info on how that works. Also (lastly) Does the disk manufacturer have info on how the blades handle proper hardwood, Iron bark, Bluegum, or softer like Stringy bark which might be a chore? If they have some of that info, you could direct us there. Many thanks. Really appreciate your hard work.

Hey there Nick. Thanks for checking out the video. I'm working with some new equipment and will try and see why the fish eye look is coming up at times and get it fixed. Thanks for letting me know. That's true about the 240v. I use the 240v plug on my Bluetti when I go camping and it works great. The main wood that the log peeling disc recommends not using is red cedar as it can get it's strings bound up in the cutter but not sure about the other woods

Hey Sandy I really appreciate all your videos, very interesting and I learn a or. I will be getting my own saw mill very soon. Called the EZboardwalk40. I was wondering what is the reason to peel the bark off of logs. Looks like a huge amount of work.

Hey there Larry! Sounds like a great sawmill. Usually I’d remove bark to use the logs for log cabins or to keep the logs from getting insects in them

Howdy Sandy- I have a question about the disc itself. Is it flat across the bottom or is it convex? The reason I’m asking is we have a peeling disc that came from Estonia and it is convex on the bottom which allows us to put a hewn texture on the outside of the logs for the wall logs but the grinder is so heavy it’s a beast to use. I’ve noticed that you are able to even reach across to the other side of the log. It may be the Makita grinder is a lot less weight than what we have. What we are using works well but so heavy we have to stop to let our arms catch up. Hope all is well. God bless
@sawingwithsandy
@sawingwithsandy Ай бұрын
Good question. The one I have is convex on the bottom as well. The Makita is quite light and maneuverable which makes it nice to use. I believe the disc is imported from Europe but I’m not sure exactly where it’s manufactured

Don't Like that bark stripper. It removes too much of the character of the log by biting into the cadmium layers. It changes the character of the logs from normal bark stripping by scrapers.
