They do sell them, but they are pricey. Look for "Peg Looms". If you know anyone who has some basic wood tools, they can make them.

Peg looms are a really old loom style. I saw someone demonstrating it on a video. I had to try it, but the looms were pricey. So we made one and I already have a homeless sleeping mat ready to bring to our local shelter. This is the first rug I made for my shop. My goal is to alternate between sleeping mats, and rugs for my shop this year. It is really a fun process. The time is preparing the bags. The weaving goes so fast!

This "little one" of 200 bags took me about 3 hours from start to finish. The homeless mat will take you about a day.

Stacy Johnson My mom crocheted one for the homeless but her poor hands are so gnarled up with arthritis, she could only finish the one after a long time but she finished it she did. I loved this video. If I were you just lay on the floor and mark with a pencil at top of your head then sit up with legs straight and mark bottom of shoe. Then add a bag more for a man. Usually they are taller. Then you will know how long you need it or google how tall the average US man is. Add bags accordingly. I'm sure you will have 4-5 bags in length.

This looks easier than crocheting the Matt but if you crochet the use the P hook. I think it's the largest plastic robin egg blue one.

Even if you cut the plastic bags to make very wide strips, a 'P' hook would be pretty holey crochet fabric. I am going to use this method to create some panels as 'artwork' for a makerspace I belong to. Collecting the bags has taken a long time, but I think I have enough for at least one panel 4' by 6'.

I haven't tried it with Cotton fabric yet, but I have made them from T-shirt strips and they turned out great. It made a great bath mat!

I had a 48 inch piece of wood to work with, so I put the holes 1.5 inches on center apart. The dowels I used were 1/2 inch, so the holes I drilled were 1/2 inch also. I drilled down one inch. The hole in the dowel to pull the material through is 1/4 inch. I hope that helps.

I use the rug outside on the sidewalk, going into my garage. I have used one under the pool ladder to keep dirt from getting into the pool, and outside of my tent while camping for the same reason. The one by the garage has been there for a couple of years, it's worst enemy is green mold, as it is always in the shade. Each spring I throw a bucket of bleach water on it and use a broom and garden hose on it. The other ones clean up just with a garden hose.

Mom Eberhard how fast do they deteriorate in the sun? Do they seem to hold up to constant foot traffic pretty well? You said you had one outside for a couple years--what's the longest one has lasted? I love the simply loom and your video has inspired me to start saving bags and t-shirts! Thanks for sharing!

These are outdoor mats, so no they cling to cement, and don't seem to slide in grass.

These rugs are no more heavy than the crocheted rugs. I think they are "fluffier" and more comfortable than the crocheted method. They certainly are much quicker to make.

I think the ones for fabric would put the pegs closer. Look for "Peg Loom" for videos on what folks are doing with it.

My pegs are 1.5 inches apart on center. I chose that because I was planning on using thicker materials. Many looms are only 1 inch apart.
