From what I've heard, writing Kanji is going the same way has cursive handwriting that fewer and fewer people know how to do it. Though, in this case, it's that they can read and recognize most Kanji but can't recall it when they need to write.

Being able to read it doesn't necessarily mean you can write it People know the sound of it so they can type it on a keyboard, but cursive is a bit different
