I have the HDII drive and did some of theses mods. I didn't want to lock my pedal arms in place because I let my kids use the kayak. That being said I did loosen and lube up the cables and pivots and it made a big difference. One thing I did differently, though, was to use a single layer of Teflon adhesive tape in place of the black tape you put in the pedals. It achieved the same effect of quieting the noise, but doesn't lock the pedal in place. Plus the Teflon acts as a bit of a self lubricating surface, reducing the resistance to pedaling. Great video. I've enjoyed watching and learning from you.

On the pedals where you put that tape I think a better idea might be to use shrink tubing. I think it would stay put better and not become gummy overtime.

I've worked as an Electronic Tech for 40 years. I NEVER use electrical tape, don't even allow it in my Tech room. It always turns into a gooey mess and causes more problems than cures. Heat Shrink is the way to go. Also, I use don't Acetone to remove decals or stickers. Alcohol breaks down the glue without damaging the plastic parts, just let it soak in for 15 or 20 minuets. Thanks, Marty, for another Great Video!

Maybe try Teflon plumbing tape on that pedal shaft, has to be better than electrical tape. Removing stickers and adhesive labels is much easier if you apply heat using hair dryer or heat gun first. Had someone put a nasty adhesive “do not park here” sticker on my car window, but it came off in one piece with hair dryer, easy peasy.

Great video Marty, some my want to use heat shrink, but everyone has electric tape and there is lots of uses for it, almost all of use keep in a carry pouch or Maine tool extra box anyway that we carry on the water anyway.. alot of good ideas to make good product better. Great work as always. Thanks, and 73 Earnest K5EWM.

Marty... I have been following you for quite a few years now. I appreciate your contribution to the florida lifestyle! I have lived here since 1985 and have been an executive for one of the worlds largest retailers. I have been an avid fisher and spearfisher and general salt water enthusiast since i first moved here. I am considering buying a home that is on the water just east of your location. I have boated up the river many times in my 26' bay/flats boat and in kayaks... I know the water can be a bit skinny through there between little harbor and your place. I intend to bring a trawler with a 40" draft... how difficult is it to navigate those waters with a boat of this size? Are you able to go ONLY during high tides? Your advice would be greatly appreciated. Maybe I'll be your neighbor soon. Thanks SK.

I hate to say it but I can almost guarantee that that company could care less about pedals that make a little bit of noise. I feel like if they were that worried about it, they would have held tighter tolerances when they designed it. I could be totally wrong but who knows.

Great vid. I currently have a pedal prop kayak but it’s nearly 14ft and heavy. I’m thinking of going to the pelican due to lower weight and simplicity. Any hacks for the rudder, as far as deploying and retracting once sitting? Ty. Also GREAT pic on the back wall…

That pedal orange band being shipped so tightly is the same thing I deal with on commercial rtu’s( roof top units) the drive belts for the evaporator fan is so tight that if you don’t loosen it will stretch out so much you will get a call back with in a month for low air flow and a frozen coil. Due to the belt being stretched out. I’m sure that happens with the orange band as well.

a good tip that marty touched on is, WD40 doesnt last long, in fact, it is best suited for displacing moisture or penetrating stuck bolts, however it also has chemicals and detergents in it that can actually cause more rust and corrosion over time, i see people use it on bike chains and some even spray their components with it only to find those parts rust much faster when WD40 is applied. i personally use marine grease on my bike chains, others use bar and chain oil or just simply go buy the chain/cable lube type of lube.

id say the rattling of the pedal pads themselves was due to the sideways moevement of the pedal on the rod. a couple of washers would have been a just as simple fix. It would also add enough resistance to possibly keep the pad in the same position as youd want it.
