In this video I do a copy of a pen and ink self-portrait by : Kollwitz, and then see if I can apply what I've learned by doing a drawing of my own.
Copying master drawings is a powerful learning tool, giving you deep insights into the working methods of brilliant artistic minds, but the learning process is supercharged if you apply what you've learned by doing a drawing in the style of the master you copied. I highly recommend it!
I'm using a Montblanc 344G fountain pen, filled with Noodlers black and working on hot-press watercolor of an unknown brand.
This self portrait is in the Kupferstich Kabinett in Dresden. Here'a look to the page where I found it:

I am a bit overwhelmed by the fact that you have chosen her as a master! I have followed you for quite a few months. I bought Conte pencils about 30 years ago, and until your videos (started watching 2 months ago!) I never knew how to use them. I told my husband that it was like waking up after being asleep. Re Kathe K. (pronounced almost as 'Katie' really, in English, with emphasis on the 'a' - I'm a Cathy too, and I live in France, so I am sensitive to pronounciation!!!). I have a catalogue of her drawings from an exhibition that I went to in Cologne in 1973 when I was an au pair there - 'Kathe Kolwitz: Zeichnungen' was the name of the expo. I was somebody who used draw, back then. Her drawings have stayed with me - as has the catalogue - over all those years. Thanks so much Marc!

You're very welcome, Cathy! I've been aware of Kollwitz's mastery for a long time, but doing an in-depth study like this really re-awakened my appreciation of her genius, and I'm glad this video is finding an audience. And thank you for the correction. I'm also a stickler for correct pronunciation, and even listened to a few German speaking videos to try to get her name right. I guess my ear failed me on this one.

The self-portrait drawing is surprisingly more revealing of the artist than the photograph. That in itself is enlightening. I wish I had had the opportunity to take instruction from you in person when I was young. The art teachers of my era were no match for you. Thank you for giving me this opportunity to learn from you now. I am 77.

You mention at about 14:21 that "Besides defining the forms and strengthening the contrast this layer (where Kollowitz starts to use texture to emphasize depth adding stronger hatching to areas that are closer to the viewer)… this is also the layer where the drawing starts taking on energy because hatching in opposite directions creates the impression of opposing forces… this is something that I need to talk about in the future, the stroke length and direction and the angles at which hatch marks intersect influence the psychology in a drawing independent of the primary function which is to render…" Please yes! a video on the direction of hatching lines and how they influence the psychology of the drawing. @mkompan

Thanks! The scratchy edges of those strokes are definitely dry brush, but the bubbly surface is something else. I suspect that the ink was given a good shake before using, creating ink bubbles. Will have to test this theory.

My theory on the splotches is either the paper, like you said, which might have been handled a lot for optimal hatching angle and therefore accumulate grease from her hands. Or I thought it might have been also just the air bubbles from quick brush strokes. Anyway, a very interesting study and good job on your reproduction, even if you were not totally satisfied with it.

Great, again, to get exposure to lesser known artists in this medium from you Marc. Nb: on the luxury point, a German relative told me that the torpedo black schulfuller were very ubiquitous in ordinary German schools in the 1950s. Also, PS: would love to see your analysis of some freer rennaiscence / baroque pen and ink work, such as Tiepolo or Guercino - if that's your thing, of course

My pleasure! You're probably referring to the Geha Schullfuller pens. I don't have one (yet), but have also heard very good things about them. I'll have to get one soon, since German mid-century pens is my favorite category at the moment. Tiepolo and Guercino are definitely my thing! I'll put them on the list.

This is great! This style of hatching feels easier to obtain (to my hand at least) than the line weight varying type and I also happen to like ink wash a lot. Could you do this sort of thing with Alfredo Alcala? I never found any video dissecting his style
@mkompan
@mkompan Жыл бұрын
Thank you! Agree this type of hatching (even though it users all three hatching methods) is easier to pull off, in part because it relies on washes for subtle transitions. I wasn’t familiar with Alfredo Alcala’s work until now (I’m more on the old master/fine art side of things), but his work is super interesting. Looks like he’s mostly uses a single directional contour hatch, with occasional cross-hatching. I’ll have to do something on this way of working.

1. Drawing faces is so daunting. Well done. 2. I'd love to see your analysis of a 20thC artist. Diebenkorn comes to mind, specifically he has one or more amazing drawings, simple, precise, and beautiful, of the sink in his studio.
@mkompan
@mkompan Жыл бұрын
1. Thank you 2. A copy/analysis of a Diebenkorn would be an interesting challenge, given my affinity for tight rendering and representation. It’s curious, I’ve had viewers request I copy Manga artists, mid-20th century illustrators and 15th century engravers. I guess it speaks to my Zelig like drawing ability.

About the white marks you thought might have been a manufacturing fault in the paper. To me they look like the indents in the surface I’ve had eg. from pressing too hard with a hard pencil or biro on the previous page. Then if I use a fairly dry brush or smudge with a finger and work fast the indentations are reserved as white. What do you think?
@mkompan
@mkompan Жыл бұрын
Hmmm, your guess is as good as mine, but those would be some strange looking indents.

Very insightful video as always. If someone doesn't have waterproof fountain pen ink, could this technique work by applying the washes first and hatching once the washes are dry?
@mkompan
@mkompan 5 ай бұрын
Thank you. You certainly could start with washes first, though it might be hard to anticipate where the washes need to go without the pen. I found that I got the best results by working back and forth a few times.

Hey Marc, nice video! It is always great to know "new" artists and their work, also I think this the first woman artist I've ever heard from this period. A slightly unrelated question come to me as I watched your demo, how practical or realistic could've been starting first with the washes and then with hatching?
@mkompan
@mkompan Жыл бұрын
Well, I'm glad I could introduce you to Kollwitz. There's nothing wrong with starting with wash, though you should use a paper that doesn't buckle, which will interfere with you line work. There's no strict order to how one should start but it will effect the final result. I have a discussion on this in a previous video titled, "pen or watercolor: which comes first?"

The only thing I would add ... sorry ... is that it's like when I was a photography student ... the focus on technique is a bit overwhelming (although men love it!). When you are someone who just gets out the camera or the pen - and I have been doing a lot of pen and ink recently - how does a second-rate artist (or even a third-rate one?) cope with this focus on how to cross-hatch, etc.? I don't do it well and am fully aware of that ... want to learn, so am not criticising the analysis, just saying that it overwhelms my desire to create? So every time I'm doing a drawing, I'm second-thinking myself - second-thinking what seems to come naturally? It was the same with Fstops (and I never produced very good pictures ... so there you are!)
@mkompan
@mkompan 23 күн бұрын
As someone who has undertaken to learn other skill, I completely understand. This video series is really suited for the intermediate/advanced students who have mastered the basics and are ready to hone their skills.If you're finding it overwhelming, I recommend first viewing my other videos on hatching before coming back to this one. I also have a detailed introduction to cross hatching available for purchase on Vimeo (If you look through my latest videos you'll see a "trailer" of sorts). Keep in mind is that it's important to build your skills slowly. Enjoy each step in process, and do not concern yourself with progress (which is a natural consequence of drawing each day). In studying the old masters, try to tackle simple detail first (a nose, an eye, a mouth, etc), then work your way up, the way a beginning pianist learns a piece, one hand at a time, one bar at at a time, one page at a time. Before you know it, you'll be copying entire drawings with ease.
