Oh, this video is a capsule of the Adventure Denali esthetic, not to sound too gushing... Calm thoughts in measured cadence, in such a friendly voice that seems to transmit a sense of fun and yet be utterly serious at the same time, how?? And the visuals, objects, framing, lighting. And the performance art which is your handwriting... Which honestly matches and justifies that lovely pen.

They feel sturdier, but they aren't. Lamy Safaris are made of the same plastic as Legos. :) Anything made of plastic will break, but I've never had a Safari break on me. I have one that's...jeez, 25 years old. Still going strong. TWSBIs have known cracking issues, unfortunately. I hope you don't experience it. I had a Diamond 580 that cracked repeatedly. It was soooo disappointing. I ended up giving it away for parts to someone in my pen club.

@@arguchik Oh that's fascinating! Thanks for sharing! I guess because the TWSBI feels weightier, I associated that with feeling studier. But it makes perfect sense why that isn't necessarily the case.

I use TWSBIs for shimmering and sheening ink. I love the way I can appreciate the hue and shimmer of the ink through the clear acrylic. I’ve had nearly a dozen TWSBIs over a 4 year period and not one of them clogged, dried up, or hard-started. I also keep giving my TWSBIs away to penable friends and family to the fountain pen world :)

This pen is the favorite by far, in all my collection. Granted, I don't have what I call expensive pens - anything over $150 I would consider expensive. I have several TWSBIs but the minis are my favorite. They are everything you say and more. They always write, right out of the gate. The built in converter protects the ink from drying out. Many of my pens will be empty because the ink dried out before I could get back to it. The ECO model is just as good as the more higher priced models. The nibs are the same. I too have the same dream to have every single one they've made and all inked up! Just one thought about what you said about the aesthetic made me think that it would be like saying you only read pretty books - no matter how crappy the story is - LOL!!
@natmickan

PSA for anyone looking for this pen: there are a few pen models that TWSBI does in a Mini size; this model is the *Diamond* Mini, which is the smaller version of the Diamond 580. There’s also a Vac Mini (smaller version of the Vac 700) which gives quite a different writing experience IMO because it’s a much wetter pen than the Diamond/Diamond Mini

You inspired me to get into fountain pens, and I got recommended for a TWSBI.. Probably the best purchase I have ever made. It just gets me so excited to write, I love seeing the ink flow and go down every dozen pages, I simply adore the way it writes and the amount of ink it carries. I love this video. Agree with your sentiment re a massive library of TWSBI pens with a range of inks. Given you can buy so many more TWSBIs for the price for some premium offerings, it’s achievable. I actually like the aesthetics and whenever I use them in the office, people say “that’s a cool pen.” It’s especially nice because they allow the ink to show off its beauty.

@@FABM27 Pilot Custom 823 is smoother and has a gold nib. It writes like butter. It’s a little more complicated filling system and you have to unscrew the top of the pen partway while writing. TWSBI is much less expensive, may not write like butter but impressively smooth and very reliable.

One of my favourite pens is my eco in blossom red in fine! I got it right as they sold out (I think I bought the last UK stock lol). I love the ecos because they write so well (in my collection of 21 pens I have 6 ecos!). The ecos are just such a good price and I'm comfortable taking them with me because they're fairly replaceable. My diamond 580 is also pretty great and it's grown on me. The white RG mini is definitely on my wishlist but it's a bit pricier than I like to spend on TWSBIS. I loved this video and I loved the ink; the colours work really well together!

Of the couple thousands dollars of pens that I've kept to husband over the years, the TWSBI Mini are my favorite, everything about them, aside from their fragility, but then, they're only 50 bucks or so if they break. But if they do, the company makes you whole. Every time. I love my Pelikan 805 modified to stub by John Mottishaw. But the 1.1 TWSBI steel stub, and the pen, are equal. I own a lot of TWSBI’s. I own a lot of fountain pens. I’m not bragging, it’s just the nature of the hobby. I have had every model of TWSBI fountain pen, except your favorite, the mini. I have fairly big hands so smaller pens just don’t feel right to me. I generally have at least a couple inked up. They are all exceptional writers. I’ve given away, or traded, quite a few too. It’s always been hard for me to choose a favorite pen, or even brand, but for beginners I always recommend Name brand entry level pens from (in no particular order) TWSBI, Pilot, Sailor, LAMY, and others. It’s hard to beat a GO, ECO, or the Swipe for the money. Especially the Swipe since it gives a few different ways to add the ink. Thanks for your videos. They’re well done. 😊

I wouldn’t call the Eco elegant or sophisticated but I do like its aesthetic, especially when all the internal components are rose gold. You’re right. It’s such a great writer. It’s a joy to use.. it almost makes you want to have a reason to write. It’s not a pretentious pen. It’s fun. I’m actually surprised to hear that you don’t like the aesthetic. I can’t believe it’s taken me this long to actually buy a Twisbi, it should arrive on Tuesday, a Vac 700R with fine nib. I bought it from a local buy and sell here in Austria, used just once so basically new for €40 complete with box and accessories. This is the first pen I have bought in years, my small collection is vintage so it will be interesting not only writing with a new pen but this will also be the first time in nearly forty years since I have written with a steel nib, the last time being a Parker that I wrote with from from junior school right through senior school and college! After reading much about them and your continuing enthusiasm for them I can’t wait to write with it! Thanks for your many thoughts on them.

I agree with you about this pen. However, I would like to add a couple of perks that are also awesome about the TWSBI Mini. You can buy a different nib size without having to buy a new pen. It’s easy to change by unscrewing the old one and screwing the new one on it. Also there are threads on the back of the pen, so it can be screwed on, when posted.

Thanks! Enjoyed your video and can appreciate your points -- especially as regards the aesthetics. I purchased a few TSWBIs over the last couple of years, each time looking for that perfect balance of the right size, the right functionality, the right aesthetics -- the 580ALR (Prussian Blue) and 700R Iris come closest -- but in preparing for the New Year and planned pen culling I realized my TWSBIs tend to sit uninked while other pens in my collection give me a thrill of excitement to rotate back into use. One of the many great things about this hobby is it's such a broad tent! I've concluded TWSBIs aren't for me; I've become (much) more enamored of the FPR pens especially with the ultra flex nib.

I got the 580 version of this rose gold. I think it looks pretty decent. Good writer. The only complain about it is the nib width. I personally prefer the width of a Sailor MF, but a TWSBI normally is just tiny little bit thinker at a level that starts to annoys me.

Thank you! I have had cramps, but only when I’ve written for hours straight. I recommend taking very frequent breaks when writing to do some hand stretches. Our bodies don’t like when we do the same thing over and over for too long.

I guess I'm lucky where TWSBI pens are concerned. I think they are all beautiful, except for the GO and the Swipe, and even these two have a charm. And my hands are big enough to make the ECO a little bit small. I really like a little wider pen with a little wider grip. I have one pen that makes the ECO look like a pencil. It holds six milliliters of ink. It's really not a good idea to post the ECO, and a terrible idea to post the 580. You can easily damage the piston knob, or even break it, by posting. Or just burp ink all over the place. But the pen is long enough that it shouldn't need posting. I think the 580ALR is beautiful in every way, but it feels even thinner than the ECO, at least in my hand. I have all the models in production, and all write very, very well. I really like the Precision. My daily carry, take anywhere pens are the Visconti Homo Sapiens Bronze Age, a Scribo Feel, and the Kaweco Brass Sport with a gold nib, but I also like to carry a TWSBI because they are great giveaway pens. I've always carried the ECO, but more and more often I take a Swipe. It writes just as well, all TWSBIs write well, and I think the Swipe is a little easier for a true beginner to use.

I’m a little upset with the TWSBI company. I purchased the ECO and loved it so I purchased the diamond 580 iris and received it today and it doesn’t write. I reached out to the company and they are more or less saying I don’t know what I am doing and they want me to send it to them at my cost! Not impressed!

I just bought a Twsbi ALR in prussian blue - EF. My first Twsbi and i love it. Beautiful pen. I currently have it inked up with Diamine Aurora Borealis, which matches it perfectly. I love having inks match the pens. That Steeped Umber goes really nice with the rose gold - good choice.

Can you tell me if you write with the pen sideways? Idk if it's the angle of the camera but it seems like you turn the pen at an angle when writing. I noticed i do this unconsciously but I don't know if that's ok or should a fountain pen be used like straight with the tip flat on the paper.
@afrog2666
@afrog2666 Жыл бұрын
Use it however you like, there`s no right or wrong, if it works, it works (: Some nibs are more forgiving than others though, as in their sweetspot might be smaller than others. personally I draw, so I hold my pens at all sorts of angles and only a few pens have been "complaining" when using odd angles.

If anybody wants to comment to give me a response. I have a question as a journaler to journaler. As many of you I have a very frequent strong urge to write down things. Maybe it is just to feel my hand writing. Maybe it is to actually write down a thought which I think is important. But when I am writing I start thinking "who on earth will read it? I do not want to read my own journals, ever! Why am I writing this and wasting time? Is this a waste of time and a distraction from important things?" I don't know if I can say it isn't a waste of time and a distraction.
@adventuredenali
@adventuredenali Жыл бұрын
I think, as long as it’s fulfilling some part of you, it’s never a waste of time. I too write simply to experience the action of writing, and sometimes it’s to record a thought down. Regardless of the why - it fulfills me, and as long as it does that, it will not be a waste of time. I don’t go back and read my journals, nor do I intend for them ever to be read (unless I’m long dead, haha). So write if you want to, and don’t if you don’t. 😊 That’s my motto anyhow.

If it weren't for the cracking issues I would be a much bigger fan of TWISBI. I had a Diamond 580 that kept cracking - and I mean spontaneously, between writing sessions, while sitting in a cushy pen case. I finally just gave it away to a pen friend for parts. I still have two Ecos (clear and the aquamarine special edition from a few years ago). I will keep using them because they are delightful writers, but I won't replace them if they crack. Interestingly, they both have EF nibs but they write very differently. I am with you on the aesthetic, though. I don't really like how any of them look. But they are workhorses - great ink capacity and smooth, juicy nibs.
@adventuredenali
@adventuredenali Жыл бұрын
That is such a bummer! I have yet to experience those issues. I hope your current TSWBIs don’t either!
@jamesaritchie1
@jamesaritchie1 Жыл бұрын
The 580 almost never cracks. That is truly very unusual. Even the ECO almost never cracks, despite the hype it gets. Even with the ECO, the actual number of cracking is so low it's almost nonexistent, and yours is the very first case of a 580 cracking that I've heard, and I come into contact with hundreds of TWSBI users. Something was very wrong with that pen because they do not crack spontaneously. Something always causes it. Overtightening is a problem with any and all plastic pens. Overtighten them and they can crack hours later, but it isn't spontaneous. At any rate, the 580 simply doesn't crack without a serious cause. Even then, cracking is so rare that it's almost unheard of. And as I said, the actual number of cracking ECOs is so low that it's tough to even measure as a percentage. When an ECO cracks, and it wasn't seriously overtightened, it is almost certainly an old pen made before TWSBI solved the cracking problem. Unfortunately, some still exist in warehouses, but a 580 cracking is astounding. It just does not happen, so you must have had a defective pen. It really stuns me.
@arguchik

@@jamesaritchie1 That's not true. Read FP forums - the cracking issues with all TWSBI models is widely known and discussed.

I think the ECO is beautiful, and the 580 ALR even more so. I have a pretty fair number of expensive pens, but only a very few of them are prettier than a TWSBI. I have a Broze Age that I think is the most beautiful business class pen out there, and I have a couple of Namiki Maki-e and a Namiki Chinkin that are stunningly beautiful, but outside of these, I rarely see a pen I think is prettier than a TWSBI ECO or 580 ALR. But you're right about the Precision. It is a very pretty pen, but seems to get overlooked. Outside of TWSBI, I'm not a fan of steel nibs. When I do find a steel nib pen that I love, I often put a gold nib on it. I have only a few that keep their steel nibs. But TWSBI is the exception and I buy every model that comes out, and have several of most models. If TWSBI ever comes out with a model that has a gold nib, I'll probably go bankrupt buying them.

This looks very good. The only problem for me is that I despise plastic and only by pens mostly made from natural materials. If you know of a (mostly) non plastic pen which features a piston system like this I would be very intersted. That said, this pen might be something I would consider giving to my niece for school when she reaches the right age.
@adventuredenali
@adventuredenali Жыл бұрын
Oh gosh, I wish I knew! That’s a tricky requirement. I think with wood, there would have to be a converter - which technically is a piston, haha! Just much smaller. With metal, same thing. That would be a challenge to find!

I am so jealous of your super hand writing. Why oh why haven't I been learning. So disappointed in myself. 🤦🏻‍♂Anyway I digress, my first ever fountain pen was the TWSBI 540 until it cracked. I was gutted. That led me into spending stupid money on pens. I dislike the metal TWSBI grips with a passion. My 580 ALR grip is too narrow and slippery its damn annoying. I do think the rose gold versions look incredible though. 😃👍🏻

I think the aesthetic of TWSBI pens aren't the worst out there, but I get where you're coming from. It's definitely not a traditional fountain pen look, and it borders on a mechanical or utilitarian kind of vibe. A pen style I didn't think I would like at first was the Kaweco Sports, but now I'm 2 pens in and want a Brass Sport. (And I suppose 2 Perkeos in, as well) 😂
@jamesaritchie1
@jamesaritchie1 Жыл бұрын
I like really big pens, and I have a couple that make the ECO look like a golf pencil. So I didn't think I'd like the Brass Sport, but decided to take a chance. It instantly because one of my favorite pens. I liked it so much I added a gold nib, which is, I think, way overpriced, but still worth it because oif what it does for the pen, and now the Brass Sport is part of my EDC. Two other pens that I always carry are the Bronze Age and the Feel. Both cost three times what the Brass Sport with gold nib cost, and I never would have believed that the Brass Sport would find a place with them, but it did. There's something about the Brass Sport that, to me, is almost addictive. I know it doesn't hold much ink, but I use it with cartridges, some of which I refill with my favorite inks, and swapping cartridges takes a few seconds, so ink capacity just isn't a problem.
@jackivaltrades
@jackivaltrades Жыл бұрын
@@jamesaritchie1 I like a large pen, but I don't like an excessively heavy pen. (Which is ironic considering I'm interested in the brass sport, but it's an exception. LOL) I have small to medium hands for a guy, and unwieldy large or heavy pens can get annoying. Something I haven't gotten into yet are gold nibs. I know that's a big things for the hobby, but I like to budget my pens around 100 USD or less. No shame in going one way or another. Just personal preference. I'm saving a gold nib pen for the final pen to my collection. 😂 Thanks for hyping up the brass Sport, and all of the fun tidbits you shared! It's funny how our expectations can set us up for a failure, but then we come out with a big win. 🙂
