Yup. Silat is one of few martial arts which aimed to incapitate/kill fast and instant with less use of power. It's closer to assassination technique, as opposed to other 'power' heavy martial arts.

Nice for you, but your fight sports are a weak link when it comes to situations where you can find yourself in, like multiple opponents or knives. Although an art like pencak silat, fma or the modern krav maga will not guarantee your survival, it gives you at least a possibility to survive. Boxing and muay thai just ensures your death. Unless you can run like hell (which in case of a knife is the smartest thing to do if possible).

No. Silat is not suitable for MMA. It's intended for surviving lethal fights against multiple armed attackers. E.g. Grappling one foe on the ground is great for MMA but a lethal fail in a 1 on 2 knife fight. I've trained silat for more than 30 years and have sparred with several pro MMA fighters. The MMA fighter typically crushes me in an unarmed fair fight in a brightly lit padded octagon but fairs poorly in an armed (we used wooden knives) fight to the death in a dark alley. It's all about context.

No. Not for MMA. Silat is intended for surviving lethal fights against multiple armed attackers. Imagine a melee of 20 people armed with machetes against another 20 people armed with machetes. Silat does not perform well in 1 on 1 unarmed sports fighting. E.g. grappling and taking your foe to the ground is a a smart tactic in a 1 on 1 sports fight, but that same tactic will be fatal in a 1 on 2 knife fight. I've practiced silat for over 30 years.

This style is not intended for sporting 1 on 1 fair fights. It's intended for surviving a fight to the death against multiple armed opponents. For example, grappling on the ground is ideal for 1 on 1 sports fighting in a padded octagon. That same approach will be fatal in a 1 on 2 knife fight. It's all about context.

why should all martial arts be tested from the octagon? For centuries our ancestors used silat to live and die in real battlefields. How many minutes can an MMA athlete last in a real sword fight ?

@@Kang_biru is it relative today? No. People have evolved through time and better hand to hand combat has been developed and the best techniques today are being used in the octagon.

@@MordecaiAliVanAllenOShea In the octagon only kick, punch, slam, choke and lock are used. This is a common technique in any martial art. The victory there is only because of who trains harder, faster and stronger. Not related to modern or traditional types of martial arts. Someone who learns MMA if they don't take their practice seriously might as well be beaten by someone else in a street fight. Likewise in the news a few years ago at my place, a student who was trained in silat even though with his bare hands survived from attack of two street robber armed with sickles, he was able to grab the robber's weapon and kill one of them, the other ran away. So, not everyone who learns self-defense is interested in competition, they practice only to defend themselves when necessary

@@Kang_biru the two main systems that are useful are Jiu jitsu and mui thai. Most the mixed martial arts fighters train in these two systems and there’s a lot more going on than what you said.

In silat you can learn not only how to handle sharp weapons attack, but also learn to be immune to sharp weapons, some types of traditional silat still teach this. this is part of the spiritual side of pencak silat
