The letter/number system instantly tells you which grade you are holding and how it will perform. Which grade draws lines with soft edges? Which grade contains more clay? You need to know if you're seamlessly shading an area, or drawing a hard metallic surface. Thanks! You've made my day! Basically, with 40+ years of professional drawing experience, I'm getting old and, instead of writing a second book, I'm attempting to unload my brain into video. I've made about 50 videos so far, but most won't be shown here (only at DrawWitMike.net). And that means I'm too busy at DWM to make them regularly for KZfaq. That said, I'm working on three at present, and at least one is particularly for KZfaq.

Thanks! I've just completed the Basic Technique series (23 videos) and I'm now working on the Creative Techniques series. I try to complete at least one each month - but sometimes quality wins over speed, and I'd rather be happy with the result and not clock-watching :) And in between those videos (available on my site) I'm doing my best to make another just for KZfaq on more general drawing subjects. And sometimes I'll reformat an existing Basic Techniques video and release that here for you.

Hi again Mike! One of my favourites grades is the F. As you mentioned it's important to have in mind that every brand have different mix, for instance, Derwent have some vegan products (as the graphite pencils from B to 9H), the soft grades really starts at 2B in the Derwent Graphic model. In contrast, Cretacolor Cleos offer darker grades, but the mix is a little bit dirty, that's why for me it's also important to get familiar with our pencils in order to take advantage of its pros and to avoid its cons. P. S. I like the way you speak: clearly and not so fast. When I watch a video in English I try to understand, but sometimes it's hard for me, instead with your videos it's easier, at least I hope so. (I hope I don't find out later that I have misunderstood something :D) Where are you from?

In the videos I often say I use 2B, HB and 2H, but I'm just trying to keep it simple. In reality, I prefer 2B, F, and 2H. As for the brands, I have a set of Derwents but only use them in the videos. My preferred brand is Staedtler and has been for many many years. Ultimately, I don't think it matters which brand you use, or mix of brands, as long as you keep to a regular choice of grades. I firmly believe that every time you pick up a pencil you should already know exactly how it is going to perform. That way you can concentrate on drawing the subject and not on how you might do it.

Wow, it appears that I’ve gotten in (nearly) on the Start of Mike Sibley’s KZfaq career. I’m looking forward to being able to actually see some of the negative magic happen.

All in good time... I'm a late starter - and getting older and slowing down :) I've just started work on the next 24 Creative Techniques videos; I'll release selected videos from the completed Basic Techniques series here from time to time (all available at DrawWithMike.net); and in between I have a long list of drawing-related topics to cover exclusively at KZfaq. It all takes time but I'll be as speedy as I can.

Which pencil leads do you use for the Mars Lumograph? Do standard leads fit in the pen or does it have to be specialized Staedtler ones?

Personally, I use Staedtler 2B, HB (or F), and 2H. And I have rarely used 4H and 8H (no longer available) for very specific jobs. And, YES, standard 2mm leads from all manufacturers fit ALL brands of clutch pencil.
