Thank you for being so slow and thorough. I am currently attempting to dismantle and clean the one I have. It's red and from the 70s and was used maybe once back then. It works fine but some pitting and dullness on the chrome. I'm giving it a complete cleaning and refurbishment and couldn't have done without this video!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you!!!!

I love mine i bought it recently for my 12 foot rod i use for bank fishing. Its a great reel for the price. I think it does great when casting. I usually throw a 3 oz weight and i can get some incredible distance with this reel . Its definitely a reel you have to keep clean and oiled but like i said i can really get some good distance with it. I picked it up new for 70 bucks and am beyond pleased with it. I live in oklahoma but still like to use saltwater gear it just holds up better with time . I have another 12 foot rod with another saltwater baitcaster and its probably pushing 30 years old . Its made by Roddy. Model 131 and its been well used and it definitely has gotten beaten up throughout the years but its pulled in hundreds of fish and still works flawlessly. But i have to admit the penn is definitely smoother than it. Great video thanks wanted to watch a good video like this before i cleaned mine . Got some grit and dirt in it fishing over the weekend and want to clean and re lube everything

I took my old reel apart and got it back together correctly but disaster. After my botched job, the star drag would loosen on its own when I reeled in and put pressure on the spool. I almost gave on my reel then found your video. After watching, I discovered that I lubed it up too much with the wrong type grease. I cleaned and lubed again with Cals grease and now it's like new. Thanks for the great video!!!

@@backonthebenchreels My reel will spool line out badly when any pressure is put on the line at all and have tried everything have had my reel for like 20 years bought it as a kid with the money I saved and im hoping to fix it because I have a trip coming up in 2 days and I cant go buy another reel in time. Any suggestions its a Level Wind 309M. Only other reel I have is a jigmaster and its not really a good reel for deep sea off a boat because it doesnt have any level wind and its a major pain to ensure line doesnt come off all messed up.

Hey boss! Love the videos Could you recommend your top vintage penn reels Or other brands For surf fishing Long casters… What would be your pick? Squidder and beach master
@backonthebenchreels2 жыл бұрын
For vintage conventional surfcasters their are a few different choices that I like. The Penn Squidder 140 is a standard along with the Penn Surfmaster 200. They are both great. The Squidder is kind of the Cadillac and the Surfmaster is basically the same design but with fewer features. But I recommend using them only with either plastic spools that are backed with braided line or aluminum spools if possible. I try to stay away from the old school chromed spools when it comes to casting. They are too heavy. The Penn Beachmaster 155 is a great tool to have in the work box for sure. Ocean City also made a few different surf models that were popular in their day and still to this day for folks that know them. The Ocean City Inductor 250 was a revolutionary reel in it's time. It has magnet brakes. It was the first mag tuned casting reel. The Ocean City Hampton Beach 994 and Chesapeake 107 are also good models. Only issue with using Ocean City reels is parts are harder to come buy these days. My top pick would be the Inductor 250 but only if it was in very good shape. My 2nd pick would be the Squidder 140 but only loaded with a plastic spool that had the airbrake fins which Penn discontinued later on in the production of that model. The aluminum spools do not have the air brake fins unfortunately. After that the Surfmaster 200 and Beachmaster 155 would be my next picks. Hope that is helpful and thanks for watching!

WoW! Informative!!! I really would love to have you restore a handfull of my Penn Reels. All made in USA. How do I find your store??

Thank you! I work primarily on my own reels and other reels for friends and family. Dennis with 2nd Chance Tackle takes in reels daily and fixes them up. If you have reels that are in need of repair I would contact him. Thanks for watching!

What do you recommend for restoring the plastic? I picked one up in perfect working order but looks like it's sun baked on both sides of the plastic.
@backonthebenchreels Жыл бұрын
That's a good question. I have experimented with a couple of different things. Rubbing oil into the plates is one thing. Another is rubbing in a automotive polish or wax. And then buffing. If the plastic is sun baked it's never going to go back the way it was when it was new but there are some methods that will help. Hope that helps and thanks for watching!

Tony I bought and cleaned a 309penn peer When I filled with line it is mostly filing more on both sides of the spool but much much less on the middle! is there a wrong part on this reel? what could effect that?
@backonthebenchreels Жыл бұрын
You mentioned that you cleaned the reel but was it serviced? If you haven't already serviced the entire reel I would start with that. Used reels can have histories that we do not know when we buy them and it's best to do a full service on it first. Full take apart, clean, replace worn parts if needed, lube and reassembly. Check the level wind worm gear and pawl assembly. Make sure they are clean and not worn out and lubed properly. If they are worn replace the parts. Also make sure your frame posts and face plates are flush and plumb. Hope those tips help and good luck. Thanks for watching! - Tony

hi. my Penn 309's line guide tends to get stuck on worm's ends and would not return freely. I brought new worm and guide and could not resolve the issue. Is the pawl's problem? Do I need a new one(though it looks good)? thanks for your help.
@backonthebenchreels2 жыл бұрын
From what you describe it sounds like the pawl needs to be inspected and possibly replaced. Remove the pawl screw and look at the teeth. If they are bent or ground down then replace it. If it looks ok and clean then reseat it and put a light film of reel oil on the worm drive and see if that resolves the issue. If not then there may be an alignment problem with the frame posts. Hope that helps. Good luck!
@denofearthundertheeverlast5138 Жыл бұрын
I had that problem in my 330GT, turns out my problem was that I didn't screw in the cap good enough and it would allow the pawl to be pushed down slightly which made it get jammed up on the turn around.

Do you this as a business, if so may I send you a few reels to get service?

Thank you for asking. At this time I am pretty backed up with reel projects but I would recommend sending your reels to Dennis with 2nd Chance Tackle. You can find his channel on you tube as well. Thanks for watching and good fishing!!
