So it's done, the only thing is put it to the test and see how well it holds up. I hope it does. lol Congrats Cameron Cochran

I think I finally found the problem these guys were having. When cranking on the reel very hard, the nut started to push against the screw lock (110A) which pushed up against the base assembly (110B) hard enough that it would become tight, tight enough that the base assembly no longer moved freely and it could no longer go into low gear. I suspect that extra 1mm puts a lot more pressure on the nut and the nut moved because it has to be so lose in order to function proper. I fixed this by adding some very thin stainless washers under the nut, since the plastic one found under the nut would compress so hard that it would bend down and lose that necessary space needed to make the 2 speed function proper. With the stainless washers you can tighten it as hard as you want, and it would maintain that space. This solved the issue. Ive put the reel through a lot of stress testing it and its preformed flawlessly. Used another reel to completely unspool it (500 yrds of 80lb) and respooled it with 15lbs of drag, cranked in low gear. I ran the test again 3 times and had no problems. Also should be mentioned 15lbs of drag even in low gear was a LOT of pressure on the reel, the stock handle would have been bending under the pressure I was putting that reel through. The higher gearing sacrifices overall cranking power. I'm satisfied with these results and confident it will work on the water without issue. Also, the guys at the tackle shop who told Lee the added thickness prevents it from engaging properly is BS, the Shift button reaches the "Gear Shift" perfectly fine. Ive talked to Steve Carson and Tony (Penn Rep and Tech) and they said the instalation is direct fit, as long as you are willing to drill the hole. Clearly it needs the washer upgrade to work best but the 1mm doesn't affect the 2 speed.

Soul!!! My man!!! When I kept taking it apart, that plastic spacer under the washer had me thinking the same thing. Much appreciate all the thorough research and the trial test on it. After going back to the oem handle, I do feel how I’m able to put a bend on it now especially with the T-bar. I’ll be applying this as I would rather have the 5mm bar. Thank you 🙏 🤙

Thanks Soul for the explanation and research. You've spent some time and energy on this. I valued the advice I got and made changes to my gear already. I think the more information the better. I'm a huge fan of having options and there is almost always more than 1 way to get something done. I have multiple Penn Fathoms (15, 15N, 25, 30, 40N) and changed out some of the handles to the Tiburon handle and filed down a couple of VISX handles. I will not be fishing them until a mid July 3 day trip. I hope to put them to the test and I'm excited to see how my choices work out. My dry land testing/simulations are all positive so I hope that translates to on the water success. Tight Lines!

@@Seastheday88 Returned Friday July 15th from a 3 day trip on American Angler. Penn 40N handle mod update The filed down 16VISX handle on the Penn 40N 2 speed performed perfect. My son used it to land 3 BFT up to a PB of 112#. He used it for heavy jigging and has it loaded with 350 yrds of 100# braid to 50ft 100# mono to a 200# bite leader. He got the 112#er with a 300gr Nomad Scatterbot. The reel is mounted on a Okuma XXXH Rail Rod. Took about 10-15 mins to land with 25# drag. My 40N with the after market Tiburon handle worked perfect also. I have same line configuration but I used mine for a sinker rig outfit. Tipped with 80# floro and 3/0 Mutu Circle hook. This trip 8oz (old school with rubberband) was the weight needed. Got a 102# and 70#(estimate) BFT on it. I have a separate setup for heavy jigs. We each got 4 BFT. I veiw the 16 VISX handle a success with the modifications I did(filing to 4mm). Probably several ways to get the same good results. Boat had 85 BFT to 180#. Fished 20 miles west of Catalina Island

@@leetaylor2158 🙌🙌🙌awesome report Lee! Congrats to you and your son. Sounds like you guys put a hurt to them 👊 wild how close they are. Glad everything worked out perfectly on the visx handle mod. How was comfort level between Tiburon and Visx? I have a Tiburon for my Talica 16, but it’s the delrin type that steps smaller at both ends vs the Makaira looking version.

After seeing your video prior. I ordered my own leaders from FISH KARMA. VERY well made and at a reasonable price too. I would have never knew about fish KARMA if I hadn't stumbled upon your channel, I'm glad I did 😊.

So if I leave the bar at 5mm the reel has a problem going into low gear under pressure? I purchased the same visx power handle and installed it on my fathon 60ld2.
@Seastheday88 Жыл бұрын
Hey Brandon. There is a plastic spacer under the nut to hold the handle arm. The resolution is making the exact same spacer in 5mm to match the visx handle. The fathom spacer is 4mm, exactly same width as fathom arm. I didn’t show exactly how I made one, but visited your home box store and made my own spacer. It’s worked flawlessly since. Hope that helps.

Could you PLEASE do a test of getting the Fathom II handle on the original Fathom 2-speed!!!
@Seastheday88 Жыл бұрын
Hi Tri, I've been testing the Fathom II handle, I don't recommend this handle at all. At higher lb test, there is way more flex and shift on this handle design. There's too much cutout to the edge. I measured the biggest cutout at 4mm on each side. I'm looking at alternative solutions for now on a 60n. Thanks

Is a fathom 40 capable of 100-200 bluefin on the knife or sinker? If so what line would you pair it with I was thinking 100 maxcuatro or 80 pp?
@Seastheday88Ай бұрын
40lb max drag. I recall biggest caught was around 200lb. But not every 200lb will fight the same way. If you know for sure they’re over 100lb, bring a VISX. I would keep the 40nld2 for 60lb duty. Pushing it for 80lb.
