Penn JigMaster Drive side plate replacement and reel tune-up

This video shows the step by step process of replacing a broken drive side plate on the Penn JigMaster. It also shows how to tune up the reel by doing the drag service and basic lubrication.

Hello, thanks for sharing your knowledge thru your vids! Well, I decided to take the plunge to do maintenance on a JigMaster from the 90's(Made in USA-Red SidePlates). I did a take-apart dry run to get into the drag stack and see how things looked. It went well. Planning to put fresh drags to have the peace of mind when fishing. Some questions for you please: Should the collar washer/cap washer be slightly bent? Also, does the fiber washer take grease like the rest of the drag washers? Thanks. My Dad really liked Penn reels and I want to get these back into tip top shape as one way of honoring him. He passed away a couple years ago and we had many good trips to Mexico where we caught a lot of tuna on the JigMasters.

John - good to hear that you jumped into it and that the video helped. The cap washer at the top of the drag stack is bent by design. It provides variable tension for the star adjuster. You can put a drop of oil on the other washer, but it is not necessary. Good luck fishing with your rebuilt reel while remembering your dad - Dennis

Newbie question But do you have to use drag grease on the drag washers or is oil or regular brand reel grease like the penn blue grease work.

You can use the blue grease but it is not as thick as the drag grease and would wear down sooner. There are two purposes to the grease. One is to reduce the friction that wears the drags and the second is to keep the drags flexible. The thicker drag grease is more durable and lasts longer. You can buy the grease online for a 1 ounce container it is about $10. If this is a single reel and are not using it every day, go ahead and use the blue grease. I do not recommend oil. It does not have the same properties as the greases. - Dennis

Thanks for the advice and awesome videos its just fun to see all the mechanics and engineering that goes into a reel. I just started buying a couple old bass reels and trying to repair them back to where I can fish with them and have nice reels but not pay the insane cost of some of them.

That is the best way to learn and you will get some great reels as a reward for the effort. Keep trying. You may not fix everyone, or you may make mistakes along the way. If you "wreck" or break a reel, or you can't fix one, just consider it the price of tuition for a lesson learned. I do it all the time! Sometimes I buy a reel that I think I can fix and learn that I can't due to parts availability, or a broken or bent piece that cannot be replaced. At least I learn a weakness in the reel and what to avoid going forward! - Dennis
