Penn Jigmaster disaster - How to restore a frozen reel

This video shows how to rebuild a Penn Jigmaster "disaster". It also discusses when cost to repair doesn't make sense. This one had a frozen spool and missing parts. It was restored.

Excuse the typo. Good show, excellent video. What an education I received watching this video plus two others before. I have a PENN reel that has been apart for over 30+ YEARS. Thank you for the scoop on the schematics and where to find the them. MAHALO!!!

Ordered a Beachmaster 160 off eBay that was in terrible shape. Rust, corrosion, drag washers were in pieces, not good. Darned spool gear was stuck to the shaft. I followed this and got it unstuck today. A bunch of work, an ultrasonic cleaner and any number of cleaning items and the internals are shining again. Got the reel today, should get the drags tomorrow as I rightfully assumed I'd need them. Cool little reel this one is. Look forward to using it since it was really in bad shape when I got it today!

Appreciate your hard work and effort. Great video. You helped me restore a 60 year old Pen 9. I was going to pay $400 for a new musky reel. But I was told that this brand-new old real would do the trick that I got for twenty bucks. A sled team of dogs can't pull the drag and it spins as smooth as butter after your tutorial. You are the man.

Dennis, I've got a Penn Jigmaster that I got used sight unseen. When I opened it up, there was so much caked on grease in the bridge, it was terrible. But thanks to your video's I was able to get it cleaned up and get new drag washers in it (the others were so old the fell apart trying to take the stack out). Thank you for the videos. The only problem this one has now is the clicker tongue is extremely corroded. How do I get that out to replace it without destroying the click button?

You cannot remove the click tongue as it is peened on to the button. The best you can do is to remove the click ring and soak the assembly with a rust buster or penetrating oil to free it up. Thanks for watching and for asking - Dennis

Hey what does mean 6/0 on a Penn reel?? I think it's the size of the hook you should use.. tell me

I don't know the answer. I have been told that the O stands for Ocean and that the 1,2,3,4,6,9, 10 etc were model numbers based on size smallest to largest. I have also been told that the 1,2,3,4 etc referred to the line capacity in 100s of yards for the olde linen line. I don't know and I have Benn unable to find out what it was based on. I do not believe it is corrupters to hook size - Dennis

The dog spring is on the bridge as is the dog. It installs differently than some of the other Penn Reels

I have the penn 210 the worm gear was working fine then it started reeling partially to either side can I just remove it and use it as a conventional reel

James Garrett you can just remove it, but why not fix it. The problem is usually a pawl or broken idler gear. If you are going to pull it apart anyway you can just as easily fix it - thanks for asking Dennis

Is it not tiny bit dangerous to use the flame and WD40? Not only the risk of flash fire but also the vapors? How do you control this?

Would you recommend brake parts cleaner instead of wd40 to clean old grease ? BP cleaner is my "go to" for cleaning old grease off metal but maybe there's something I don't know.

There are several cleaners that are similar. I have had success with WD40 and it is multipurpose, so I stay with it. I know a lot of folks that use the brake parts cleaner as an alternative. Either way it is mission accomplished if they get rid of the old grease. Thanks for sharing - Dennis

Brake parts cleaner is harder on the plastic. I like to wash plastic and metal parts with detergent and water and then blow dry with compressed air before lubricating everything.

Search my channel for the Ocean City 940. This is identical to the 747 with the exception of the level wind. I do not have a 747 at the moment. I will add to my list and do one when available. In the meantime, the OC 940 video will show you the basics. Thanks for asking - Dennis

Sorry for the confusion. I just did a search. I don't have one of these. I will add to my list. This looks like a Japanese reel from the 60's and may have been made by Compac line by the body shape. I will do one if/when available. Thanks for the clarification
