Penn State was up against the legendary Tim Couch and the Kentucky offense in this bowl game. After a slow start and being torched by Couch on the first two drives, the Lions woke up to hand Kentucky the usual physical dosage that Paterno teams were known for dishing out. The defense dished out sacks and pressure that began to force turnovers, while the offense played well enough to put some points on the board, despite missing some huge opportunities. The result ended in a 26-17 bowl victory for Penn State.
The Nittany Lions capped the 1998 season with a 9-3 record which earned them a number 17 ranking in the AP poll. Meanwhile, Kentucky's loss put them at 7-5 for the year.
