I'm (poke)balls deep in Pokemon Violet this week and despite everyone's initial criticism of the game, it's just a fact that Pokemon music just doesn't miss, and Scarlet / Violet is no exception. There's a lot I want to cover from this gen, but this for me was such a standout track.
Something I do that's probably very weird to some, is I really like listening to a game's soundtrack before playing it. I love to hear the music first so that when a song I really liked in the initial listen comes on, I'm extra hyped. It's a feeling that's really hard to top doing it the other way around. I was working on some super secret upcoming project this past week while waiting for the game to drop and this song came on and stuck to my brain like Brock on a red-blooded human female.
I tuned down to Drop G on the 7-string for this one, but really tried to match the octaves of the melody as best as I could. It took some interesting bends to hit some of the high Fs and F#s and sometimes I admit it was sounding like a dog whistle at times, but I think it really helped the melody stand out from everything else going on. I used a bunch of synths and electric drums in conjunction with my usual instruments, so it was really hard to get a clear mix on this one.

Sorry if this was a spoiler that you fight Penny. When you get to this part of the game if you haven't already, I think you'll still be surprised. I wanted to do something earlier on in the game first, but I just couldn't convince myself I wanted to do any other song first. Hope you still enjoy! On one hand Penny was high profile in the trailers, so you fighting here isnt a spoiler on its own. The theme itself doesnt fit what we know about her... before the reveal. Another option is to name it "Team Star Boss Theme" if need be.

My young son started Violet, his first real Pokémon game, and he immediately wanted an Eeveelution team. I got to this fight ahead of him, and made sure his team was better. Seeing his eyes light up fighting Penny with his own will always live with me.

@@OtakuD50 They weren't rumors, Penny along with the other five gym leaders put together Team Star to take revenge on the bullies at the academy. It is a very deep plot with the history of the group since it not only shows a situation in which the victims became victimizers and the corruption of the the former board of directors of the academy when trying to hide the scandal.

This fight in-game is one that no matter if you see every part of it coming, it still hits emotionally. And this song has EVERY part of Penny's character in it; her originating from Galar, her resolve to end Team Star's actions, but still holding the ideals of Team Star close to her.

@@blu6295 Yup -- pretty big spoilers if you haven't played this far, obviously, but after the big incident a year-and-a-half before the game's story, with Team Star bringing the Starmobiles to the Academy to stand up for themselves (and a lot of the bully kids ended up leaving the Academy and most of the staff quit), Penny took the fall for the other Team Star members and said it was all her idea, and it was mentioned that was sent back to her home region of Galar for a time.

I love this track because it feels distinct from anything the franchise has produced before but it has familiar elements you might see in a Pokemon soundtrack. Feels like what they were trying to do with Wally's battle theme, but executed well this time. Edit: Just realized how much this sounds like the Galar gym theme in places. Holy freaking cow, bud! How I missed this earlier, I'll never know. But this is one of the best things I've heard in a long while. Loved this theme in the game, and I am just impressed with this cover. The pace you manage to keep in the song just highlights what Penny must've been feeling in a battle like this. I especially love the way you changed the chorus in the second part with the outro, really like seeing your own spin on this stuff. I know that was long, so I'll give it to you straight: absolutely incredible work!

The only bad thing about Penny is that her team sucks, being only eeveelutions, but anything else is great, she is a great character with a great resolve, trying to fix what she caused, which honestly can't blame her, and it's a real thing that can happen in real world. I opened this fight with Glaceon, my favorite eeveelution by a long shot, fully knowing Penny had an eeveelution team and the ones that she didn't have were Glaceon and Espeon. Managed to boost 6 Calm Minds on the face of the Umbreon, Trailblazed once, and proceeded to sweep her entire team with Tera Freeze-Dry. Sorry, Penny, you didn't have the best one. (I fully know that Glaceon is not good in competitive but I just had to okay)

If Clavel wasn’t as empathetic to the students of his academy, Penny would have sacrificed not only her name and reputation, but possibly the only chance of ever meeting her best friends face-to-face. She would have gladly faced expulsion if it meant that her only friends were safe from the same fate. Ultimately, Starfall Street is a story about friendship, when revenge goes too far, and the journey to correct past mistakes. Penny may have technically committed a few crimes during Operation Starfall, but it was all for a good cause. Her undying friendship, loyalty, and willingness to sacrifice her studenthood for the ones she loves are noble traits for someone like her to have, and she did it all despite her shy, introverted nature. I love this storyline so much, man. Wholesome friendship stuff hits me right in the feels every time. Penny's story is the only time a Pokemon game has ever made me cry. I wish I could give her a hug, because she deserves one.

I fully agree with you in the description about wanting to hear the music in-game first; it's much more of a hype moment when you hear a catchy beat come in alongside a big moment. I've also enjoyed music a lot more once I've played the game they're from as I can appreciate them more that way; I usually find myself bouncing off music from games I haven't played, whereas the ones I have played usually stick around even if they aren't in my usual taste because I have that tie to them through the gameplay.

When I first heard penny’s battle theme on KZfaq (I didn’t own pokemon scarlet or violet and other Pokémon games) it amazes me some much! (And I love eeveeloutions some much!🎉🎉🎉❤
