Good timing, I am going to rebalance with a 10% tilt into the Russel 2000

Sound Advice. "No, we probably can't beat markets but, most of us are going to try anyway" my exact investing philosophy! Fine tuning with a blunt instrument-what a powerful concept. When I am risk on: Nasdaq 100 QQQ , small caps, or emerging markets…. risk off: Large Cap Value or dividend paying defensive funds.
@fredatlas4396
@fredatlas4396 Ай бұрын
@charlesjohnson4442 Sounds like a good strategy, but how will you know when to be risk on or risk off. How will you make that decision. Are you currently risk on or risk off.
@charlesjohnson4442
@charlesjohnson4442 Ай бұрын
@@fredatlas4396 I use the S&P 50 day moving average- below that risk off and the 200 day moving average- above that risk on. That is extremely over-simplified but I also considered current events and…. forgive me, "gut feeling"

My 'tilt' strategy that I've used a few times over the years is to hold until it reaches x% of my investment. I've used this for China a couple of times - set a % profit level and sell then eg 20% or 30% (quite volatile market). I don't worry if I sell too early but am happy with my 20% profit.

Excellent video, as always! My SIPP portfolio has a smaller "core" ~30%, with the remaining ~70% "tilt" comprising of MMF, bonds / gilts, energy, medical, infrastructure, gold, dividend leaders and Japanese equities. I recently retired, so my "tilts" are deliberately mostly defensive, rather than adventurous!

I've got around 5% in satellite funds split between an India index fund which is beating VHVG by quite a margin, S&P 600 and a global multi factor fund. It'll be interesting to see which one performs best after 10 years. But they're such small percentages that they will hardly make any difference to my overall investments across ISA and SIPP.

Ive been interested in a small tilt towards US Small cap or small cap value on my platform but they don't seem to be readily available is this a common theme for UK providers?

Brilliant video, Ramin. As you say, it is human nature to try and outperform and Core and satellite is a very sensible way of allowing yourself to try and beat the market. I always see my portfolio through this lens. I use global quality factor ETFs as my core and then have satellite positions in a momentum ETF, US small caps, and UK stocks.

I have VGLS60 which tilts towards the UK, AJBell MA which has a high EM proportion, then HSBC America as well as HSBC GSbal (which is pretty much market cap weighted so no tilt ?)

Or maybe we need to pay a higher PE ratio and these backward looking metrics aren’t as relevant? Americans buy SP500 even if it underperforms, I can’t see that changing in 20yrs.

If your core pension is a SIPP rather than traditional pension house, it's likely only protected up to £85k by the FSCS 😳

This isn’t accurate.
@MrFrobbo
@MrFrobbo Ай бұрын
@@coderider3022 please explain why. SIPPs are typically not 'contract of long-term insurance' and therefore only protected up to £85k by FSCS. Vanguard will confirm this.

@@MrFrobbo my understanding is traditional / life assurance providers only cover full value if you use their own products.

@@coderider3022 I'm unsure how this answers the question of why my comment isn't accurate. Feel free to ask your SIPP provider to what value FSCS protects your account in case of insolvency/business failure. You will find SIPPs are generally not protected by the FSCS greater than £85k.

I've had a few various "tilts" for the past 6 months or so, but I only do this in my S&S ISA, not my pension, and it's only a small percentage of my ISA, so a tiny percentage of my overall investments. My tilts have been towards US Energy, quality, value, etc. but this is purely for fun and additional information rather than any belief that I can beat the market (possible with the exception of US Energy, I was shown some analysis at work that the oil price is anticipated to rise over the next couple of years, and therefore this 'tilt' could outperform).
