No one has said yet, but Kevin the beatboxer is actually a tenor. I don't think he contributes vocally below baritone, though some of his percussion will fill out the low end. In this one, I'm pretty sure it's just Avi... and Scott when Avi has the solo.

Yes, Mitch has said that Kevin actually can sing higher than he can which you clearly see in John Lennon's Imagine. When they are singing homophonically Kevin is usually singing high tenor notes.

💗💗💗 They are individually so talented, however, when put together, it is truly magical 💗💗💗 And although I love every one of the Pentatonix group, Mitch has a special place in my heart. There is just something so special about a male counter tenor, that feels so exquisite to my ears 💗💗💗

Yes, Avi is an opera trained basso profundo but he has a very wide range, like Scott and Mitch. Kirsty has a very respectable range which would be outstanding in any other company. Kevin has a probably unexplored range - he didn't even believe he could sing until Avi and Scott coached him. A truly talented group of people.

Avi (pronounced Ah'-vee) left Pentatonix in 2017 for personal reasons. He currently has a very successful solo career; I recommend subscribing to his KZfaq channel: youtube.com/@AviKaplanMusic Matt, the current bass, joined in late 2017. He doesn't have the extremely low notes Avi does, but he can go much higher than Avi, and his range seems to still be growing. Check out his arrangement for the 2nd verse of "Hallelujah" (from their 2023 world tour) here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/d7mJra-gzp6VYJ8.html

Beautiful reaction, thank you ~ Avi Kaplan now has an eclectic and talented solo career of mostly original work : from his powerful "Change on the Rise", to his gently beautiful "Avi Kaplan, All Is Well, 7 Layers Session # 126" to his jamming "When I'm a Fool, Live at Sunset Sound" one gets an idea of his incredible range and musical variety. Avi pours his emotions into his musical creations, and is truly a pleasure to see live in concert. Hoping that you will someday enjoy reacting to Avi Kaplan.

One thing that confused listeners on this song in particular is that Avi hands off the bass line to Scott during his solo. The versatility that you spoke of is honestly their biggest strength - theres always at least two members in range of any note that needs to be sung, which allows them much more freedom to hand off accompanyment in order to play to each members strength. I'd suggest listening to some of Kevin's solo stuff like his looping cover of Marian Hill's down to get more of a feel for his voice, Pentatonix cover of Kiiera's Gold to hear extremely technical vocals, and the live version of Aha from when they toured in Singapore to just have your mind blown by Avi and Mitch.

Avi Kaplan was classified as a basso profundo while studying opera before Pentatonix. He was with them from their formation until he left due to touring burnout and also because he wanted to write music. Today he has a much more relaxed touring schedule. If you want to hear him today I recommend his "When I'm A Fool" Live at Sunset Sound. KZfaq channel is under his name Avi Kaplan.

@@helenconnor3714 I disagree. His sister who was Pentatonix tour manager did not leave for a couple more years and his mother recovered. Tour burnout is a serious problem in the entertainment industry for both the artists and grips. Today for example Avi uses tour buses instead of planes and the schedule itself is much more relaxed and shorter.

Avi Kaplan is a bass and left the group in 2017. The group replaced his bass with a baritone singer named Matt Sallee, Mr. Sallee is able to sing (at least when he first joined them) a few notes lower than Scott Hoying. He is definitely not a duplicate of Mr. Kaplan but he brings a wonderful voice and tone to the group that fits seamlessly into their Pop-ish sound. We are fortunate that Mr. Kaplan is on his way as a solo artist and he does have a channel here on You Tube. His preferred genre is Americana/Folk with just a hint of country, at times, and you might enjoy his offerings.

To hear what I would guess is Avi's lowest notes, watch Aha! From the Singapore concert. It's a fan-made video and you will not see Kevin (although you'll hear him), but the intro to the song is fabulous with Avi blowing the speakers with his low notes. And then you'll also be Mitch-slapped with his incredible high notes.

I believe Avi's low note is D1. Not the lowest singer on KZfaq, but the power he still has at that low range is more than enough to blow speakers others can't at lower notes (such as Geoff Castalucci, low note around D0 I believe). They all have at least a 5 octave range, but Mitch has at least a 6.5 octave range. Kirstie's top note I believe is a Bflat7, and Mitch is actually B7, so technically he's half a step higher.

Thank you for choosing Pentatonix. I often have to remind myself that they are singing without instruments because there doesn’t seem to be anything lacking at all. The relentless work schedule conflicted with Avi’s need to be home more often, but he has gone on to have a delightful solo career. And Matt Sallee, the bass who joined the group in 2017, has brought his own brand of enthusiasm and perfection to the group, so it’s all good. I would love to see your reaction to Prayers for This World, Come Along, Can You Feel the Love Tonight and Gold, if you are so inclined. I enjoyed your analysis very much! Peace … (And thank you, too, for the subtitles.)

Jack...I have a treat for you. Since you like LIVE performances, one of the best ever by Pentatonix was their "2016 PopSpring Concert". The concert was sponsored by MTV, so the video and audio are terrific...it's about 15 minutes, but they sing 4 of their own songs and is spectacular !! A couple of other LIVE performances are "Gold" (Kiiara) and "Coffee in Bed" from their appearance on Jimmy Kimmel live TV . These show how UBER talented they are !!!

I second Gail’s suggestion for When I’m a Fool by Avi Kaplan. He is a prolific and talented singer-songwriter who was named one of the top ten basses of all time last year, mostly based on his solo work. Avi uses all of his 5 octave range in his solo career but has a few bass-heavy songs as well as many short videos on KZfaq. As good as Avi sounds in video, his live shows are beyond compare…his voice is so powerful that you can FEEL it. I enjoyed your reaction and comments. Thank you for the English subtitles. 👍🏻

😃👉👉Scott Hoying - is the baritone with a very extensive range! 👉He as you can see in this video takes over the bass when Avi or new bass member Matt have a singing lead. Scott also hits HIGH falsettos easily. He is VERY soulful. Avi Kaplan (Ah-vee) is a TRUE BASS! /basso profundo. He can easily sing baritone/tenor. He also does overtone (sing a high note and a low note at the same time) Kirstie/Kirstin Maldonado sings mezzo soprano/alto. Mitch Grassi sings high tenor/counter tenor to an alto. Kevin Olusula (K.O) is the EXTRAORDINARY beatboxer, he has a beautiful tenor singing voice and can hit really HIGH notes. .....Matt Sallee (new bass as of late 2017) is a bass, baritone.

Kevin has perfect pitch. If they need a reference note to start they ask him for it, though they may also have a beginning note in the earphone. During the song, anyone who feels unsure takes their note from Mitch, because once he starts he's ALWAYS on key. Scott tends to forget lyrics so they have teleprompters all over the stage.

Hi! from a little town in Nevada! (I don't know where you are, 1st look at your channel) I listen to something by PENTATONIX every day!! I still have a ton to explore myself! 😅 I can tell you a few things that we 'Pentaholics' want everyone to know! They never use autotune or other electronic devices in their videos! It's pure voice! However, if they do use an instrument, you see it in the video. An awesome example is their cover of "Radioactive" a collaboration with Lindsey Sterling a violinist/dancer (an amazing artist herself!). Inthis video not on does Lindsey play violin but Kevin plays cello AND beat boxes at the same time!! 🤯 He named it cello-boxing! 😅. Another thing people new to PTX get confused about is changes in the group. There has only been one. Avi left the group in 2017 for personal reasons. Matt Salle replaced Avi as the bass. He is just as wonderful in his own right. His voice is like warm syrup! At times, early on you might think there have been more. But it's just Mitch and Kirsten are chameleons and like to change their looks a lot!! LOL 😊❤

Actually, you’ll notice the arpeggios in the beginning section, mimic Jeff Buckley’s guitar riff on his cover. I think that PTX uses the same verses that Jeff did as well. You might go so far as to say that this is a cover of a cover. They did this same thing on Mad World, where they used Gary Jules’ cover for color and tone. PTX changed it to a darker, slower version, with great visuals, more befitting the lyrics. You gotta see it.

I think you would appreciate their live cover of Kiiara's song Gold. I suggest you listen to a least a bit of her original, which is a heavily electronic dance track, so you can appreciate what Pentatonix does with the material. For music with the new bass, Matt Sallee, I would suggest the mashup New Rules (orig. Dua Lipa) x Are You That Somebody? (orig. Aaliyah), where you can see the warmth and nimble pop responsiveness of Matt's voice. Also their fantastic and beautiful Amazing Grace, in which everyone gets a solo, and then their remarkable and very fun 90s Dance Medley, about which every reactor complains "Is it over ?!" because they are enjoying themselves so much - as is the group!
