Deserved visual love letter to a classic Pentax Macro lens, and many excellent macro lenses have born that name. Even with the things we love, we will embrace imperfections and shortcomings, and the DFA WR's tendency to purple-fringe when shooting shiny objects or twigs against a bright overcast sky is one that you didn't mention. Well, in many if not most cases it will be easily fixable in post. Also, modern hypercorrected zooms, in particular wideangle zooms, can even be sharper - here to mean: better-resolving - than their prime cousins, due to enhanced correction of aberrations. What higher element count may affect in negative ways is microcontrast and colour rendition, though. That's where the low-element-count primes shine IQ-wise. Optically, the new HD AW iteration of the DFA100 was specifically designed to fix the purple fringing problem and to make the lens benefit from better coatings.

I like macro lenses. Not only are they as sharp as heck, but they are (usually) flat field. Back several decades ago when I was acquiring my photo skills I went through several macro lenses. I eventually decided on the FA50/F2,8 and the A*200/F4 both of which I have still today. The A*200/4 is so sharp it will make your eyes bleed and has fantastic colour rendition and contrast. There is a YT video of a big time Canon shooter that claims it's the sharpest lens ever made (I guess at that time). Yeah, there is no substitute for a good macro for close up (200mm) and copy (50mm) work.

I absolutely love my dfa 100 f2.8, a superbly sharp lens. Paired with the K1, it delivers stunning results.😮

I am using the manual focus on the 100 macro more and more. On tiny subjects it is difficult sometimes to get AF where I want. With manual it is easier to experiment with point of focus. This lens is absolutely superb either way.

I have this lens and love it- macro photography is a favorite of mine and I'm always finding things to shoot, been trying to shoot the perfect raindrop where the image through the drop is in focus- keeps me busy

I have this lens, but I have not used its macro feature. I use it as a telephoto for close-ups of flowers and leaves. That I do by manual focusing, because it tends to hunt a lot. Back in 2020 when we went to eastern Quebec to see whales, since I only had Pentax 300 mm/F4 at that time, I resorted to using D FA 100 mm for whales appearing close to our ship.

I have an old MF SMC A 100mm macro lens that is crazy sharp and built like a tank. It has been said to never use a macro lens for portraiture because they are too sharp and will show every flaw.

Kobie I have the 100mm 2.8 M lens not a macro lens but still a incredibly sharp lens and small too not much longer than a 50mm lens and with the 49mm front element it will take a 50mm Pentax lens hood

The ED AW version is worth the upgrade if you're on the fence about upgrading to it. CA is completely eliminated. I've been enjoying the upgrade and it's a go to lens for me as well. The bokeh is hard to beat.

1to1 macro lenses are great, but i wouldn't rule out any of the vintage lenses that only offer close focus like 1 to 5. Close focus lenses can be great for copying documents or even larger flat items. Very nice and sharp video.

I could never justify getting a Pentax 100mm macro lens ( even now that prices have gone down). I have the Tamron 90mm macro and also the Pentax 50mm f2.8 macros, so it is hard to justify even if it looks like a great lens and there are inexpensive versions available
