Regarding the album cover...the “freaks” aren’t under a circus tent. They’re out on the street, walking among us. Because, in some ways, we’re all freaks. 😉

Sounded strange, but in a great way in 1967, when I was just 14. The Doors appeared as if from another planet. There was nothing quite like them.

The contrast between Manzarek's happy, carnivalesque keyboards and the vaguely sinister undertones of Morrison's lyrics and vocals is fascinating, and runs through many Doors tunes.

What I like most about this song is that it reminds me of absolutely no other song. It stands on its own.

Riders on the Storm, one of my favorite songs of all time. Draws you in and keeps you there the whole time.

"No one remembers your name, when you're strange" One of those songs that you just feel like you heard it before the very first time you hear it. One of the strange consequences of perfection I guess.

The End should be experienced from the opening scene of Apocalypse Now.

When The Music's Over is a must listen if you like going on long journeys with the Doors.

They should really check out “Touch Me” by The Doors. It will be such a cool and surprising contrast to everything else they’ve heard from them. Plus, it’s just a really good song.

The Doors do have another "strange" song from the same album, "Strange Days" but I'd go with others with "Peace Frog" as the next Doors track to check out.

"Moonlight Drive" is a great Song. The first Song he wrote that they composed. They were so impressed by his writing, that they wanted him immediately on board.

Jim Morrison wrote so many really good songs. "Hello, I love you", "Riders on the storm", "Love her madly", "Roadhouse Blues", way to many to list here. He wrote as far as I know 46 songs. To answer your question the lyrics came first. He often battled depression. This song came to him one evening when he had been talking to a friend about his depression, and realized that people are strange when your a stranger. That their faces did look ugly and that when suffering depression the streets did seem uneven because you can't really feel at those times that you are standing on solid even ground. Then the music was built around the song. This was the way with almost all of his songs. He honestly was an excellent poet who we are able to enjoy lyrically. As always excellent reaction guys. First song I ever sang for karaoke. I got up on stage and the host told me that the lyrics pretty much start right away and I was like yeah, I know. The music came on and I began singing into the mic. I was nervous as hell, but there was a guy singing coming through the speaker and I said to myself, "hey, that guy sounds like he knows what he's doing. I'm going to sing along with him." Yes, I said that about my voice coming through the speaker. It sounded that different than what it sounds like to me. I have learned to listen to the voice coming out of the speaker and adjust my voice to sound how I want it. Love this song. My first experience with this song was actually from the movie The Lost Boys from the 1980s. If you haven't seen it, It is so deliciously 1980s and I highly recommend it and it includes this song on the soundtrack, and it fits perfectly.

"Light my Fire" is the Original first time reaction song for The Doors. It worked for the Kids back in 1967 it should still work for you Boy's today.

An interview they said that Jim wrote this song in about 5 to 10 minutes. He was feeling kind of depressed and he went off by himself.

The rest of The Doors say Jim Morrison wasn't really a musician but he came in with rough melodies for his lyrics, it's how he remembered his lyrics and often Jim's initial melody ideas inspired them to build the rest of the song around it.

It's been a while since I've read any Doors books and member autobiographies, but I seem to recall Manzarek saying Jim would just recite his poems and they would find melodies in them as a group.

this is a perfect song...when the Doors kept it tight and spare, they were perfect. they could lapse into self indulgence, esp Morrison, and lose the thread. but here, the eerie lyrics, the circus-keyboard, the guitar, that *voice*, it is perfect. and why the Door will always be timeless.

To me this song takes me back to school in the 70’s/80’s. I was bullied as a kid. I related to this song. I always felt like a stranger, to myself and to my friends. So I never though about other places or customs. I took as I was the stranger. And people were strange to me because of it. Thanks guys. Great vid!!!

What made the Doors so amazing is that there was only 3 instrumentalists. A guitar player who only finger picked, the keyboard player who incorporated bass through the keyboards and the drummer and the vocalist. Great songs you should play are Roadhouse Blues, When the Music's Over, LA Woman. Moonlight Drive, Riders on the Storm and Waiting for the Sun. All sure to amaze you.

Alex is correct in that the strangeness of this track is that it is SO specific and SO unique: the same verse/chorus over...what is it? It sounds old even for the day, but then you're hard-pressed to find another example of songwriting like this within the rock idiom. That's the real reason the Doors are legend, less that the singer looked cool, or that the band wrote such great melodies - there was nothing like them before, and some [including myself] say we'll never hear a band quite like them again in rock and roll.

Lou Reed's Velvet Underground was a lot like the Doors in the late 1960s (i.e., dark, not all peace and love), just without the success. Worth exploring, too, especially the legendary first LP.

In the CSNY song Almost Cut My Hair, the singer describes deciding to "let my freak flag fly". The news called them hippies. A lot of them called themselves freaks. The album covers shows the freaks are loose on the street and not just in the circus (Freak shows at carnivals were a big thing once upon a time).

It seems like everyone goes through a Doors phase. There was a time when I was younger that if I was up past 2:00am I would put in a red light bulb and crank the Doors. But oddly, I haven't enjoyed them as much lately as I did back then. I still like them, but haven't played any on my own for years.

Its incredible to think they really didn't have a bass player, it was mostly Ray Manzarek hitting those bass tones on the keyboard. thx for sharing Andy & Alex :)

This number is anchored by Ray Manzarek. Don't forget that the Doors had no bass player -- Ran Manzarek played it all on the keyboard. So he was able to mix the left hand and one of the several right-hand parts all by himself. I've always thought that the rest of the parts were laid on top of that foundation. This was the standard formula for most of the Doors numbers, especially the great ones. He laid several additional right-hand parts on top of the base in this studio version. Oh, and by the way -- you have to listen to "When the Music's Over" and "Soul Kitchen".

Jim Morrison was depressed and he went to Robby Krieger's house, they went to a canyon to watch a sunset, and Jim realized he was depressed because "if you're strange, people are strange." He then wrote the rest of the lyrics, which are about feeling alienated. Krieger, The Doors' guitarist, wrote the music. He did his guitar solo in one take....truly unique band....great tune.....you MUST check out Spanish Caravan and Five to One......peace

The Doors is one of my favorite bands/artist. One of my frinds got me hooked on them when I was in Germany.....I heard one song and was hooked. I went out and bout all of theior CDs soon after. That same freind intruduced me to KISS as wel....great freind new great music for sure.
