Been watching the NHL since the late 70's, and 100+ points has ALWAYS been a great achievement!!! Everyone loves to denigrate the "high scoring 80's", as if everyone was scoring high numbers, but that's NOT the case! I don't remember any single season, wherein a guy scoring over 100 did not put him in the elite category...

As a Montrealer in my mid-thirties, I can honestly say that I started following the Habs from the Bell Center era (1996) - I don't remember much of the Forum era. In 1996-97, we had Damphousse at 81 and Recchi at 80 points. Then in 2007-08 Kovalev reached 84 points. The last 100pts Habs was Mats Naslund in 1985-86. I can only agree with you that we have to stop pretending that it's not an incredible feat.
@koncorde
@koncorde Жыл бұрын
As a fellow Montreal fan I was introduced to the game around the time we had Muller, Damphousse, Bellows, Lebeau, Savard etc and it was a time when 100pt seasons were drying up, and even point per game players started to become rare. We seemed to trade year after year chasing that 80-100pt player only for them to fall short... and eventually just dry up entirely. A club legend like Saku Koivu maybe got a point per game once or twice? Since then, Kovalev did it for a few years maybe? After that we've been lucky to see more than a handful each season break 50pts - so for one guy to do that every season by himself is stupendous (even if it does reflect the league opening back up again to attacking play).

Both 1994-95 and 1995-96 had very good scoring numbers, some actually say the dead puck era started after the 94 lockout. IMO, the dead puck era began in 1996-97 following the elimination of the tag-up offsides rule. The rationale was for defensemen to make more skill plays rather than firing the puck back into the zone and continuing the forecheck. The unintended consequence was that teams had to completely clear the zone and wait for the puck to leave, so they just set up defensively in the neutral zone. Honestly though, the 95/96 panthers were a perfect example of a dead puck era team with no real talent only succeeding because of the trap. I started watching in like 94-95, so i pretty much grew up with the trap era/ dead puck era.

There's a couple videos on here but through the 90's there was much more focus on defense and physical play and a lot less scoring than any other era of the NHL. Everything happening away from the puck was just as important or even more so than what was happening with the puck, hence the term "dead puck". It sounds funny when you think about some of the brawls in the 70's, but the biggest hits of all time happened in the 90's and it was a beloved part of the game at the time.

This was still a different era and the game wasn’t the same as it is now. The game was still more physical, physical defense was emphasized, players could use their stick WAY MORE leniently, goalies had slightly bigger pads and weren’t expected to get involved in breakouts or breaking up plays, rules became stricter and enforced more. I’m not taking away anything from McDavid because he’d dominate in any era but it’s not surprising he’s scoring at this rate. It’s still insanely impressive. Just not surprising. That’s just how good he is. Still If anything 0:54 is a testament to how great Crosby is. He was well over a PPG when it wasn’t as easy. Hell Datsyuk never achieved a career PPG. @@jackmaloney9936I guess it’s the same if you ignore every other difference I just pointed and ignore the stats in the video. So rules are identical to 10-15 years ago huh? No changes to how rules are interpreted? No changes to how penalties are given? No changes to goaltending equipment? No changes in coaching philosophy? Go watch some games from 2005-2013ish and count the amount of penalties they’d call today. I already said McDavid would dominate in any era because he’s so great in every aspect of the game. But to suggest he’d produce MORE points in one of the lowest scoring eras of the sport is optimistic. Not impossible though with McDavid.

He was on pace for 130-140pt seasons. So it actually isn’t nutty at all in this era that McDavid is doing what he is doing. Adjusted for era a 25 year old Crosby would be around 1.8-to 2ppg today. He honestly is chasing the 10th most points in a season record now....held (of course) by Gretzky who had a mere 164 points in the 1980-81 season. McDavid has 100 points in 56 games, assuming a 2 point a game pace for the remaining 26 games---that takes him to 152 points. 164 for him with the odd 3 or 4 point night for those remaining 26 games....yep it is totally possible he passes 164 points on the season. MIKE BOSSY is 20th all time in a season with 147 points. McDavid only needs a mere 48 points in 26 games to at least get 20th all time. I say McDavid gets there and then some. But how well the Oilers do in the playoffs (just like the LEAFS) is still the big big question. Ridiculous though to have a guy like McDavid on the team, another guy like Draisatl and a guy like Hyman and NOT make it past Round 1 or Round 2 though.

@@claude122 I can’t believe I have to explain this…… it’s a team sport. McDavid can’t control if he’s in the defensive zone and then his teammate turns the puck over and the other team scores. Or if he is playing good defense and the opponent shoots a low percentage shot but the goalie misses it. That is why +/- is an awful representation for defense. Most the time you get a - in +/- it wasn’t your fault. Do you get this?

@@obi-wankenobi8413 sometimes it can happen youre right but when u have 100 points you shouldnt be at +2 there is no way that should happen - drasaitl is 82 points -3 so yeah they scores goals and have points but are there for a lot of other teams goals - you cant always blame defense and goalie - takes less risk and play better in your zone

To me they still don’t make the cup final this year. Look at where they are in the standings and wonder how they are in that spot with all that talent! It proves that it’s still a team game and they are too too heavy.

My take is that the referee has a lower bar in penalty which led to advantage for fast smaller players and at the same Time it seems like defense is getting worse every year . The bigger physical style is almost gone. What do you think about that ?

We're witnessing the greatest hockey player of all time. He will finish 2nd all time in points to Gretzky, and will be the only player in history to score over 2,000 points. Only difference is, hockey is 3x harder than it was in 1980. Do not take this gift for granted!!

LOVE that move. Even if he plays 3C as a shutdown faceoff machine who can produce and drive a line, i think its a huge win for the leafs and especially on the PK and D-zone draws he will be KEY and will free up more offensive opportunities for papi and JT. also, the only real significant asset they gave up was the 1st rounder, which yes it's a deep draft but thats a total wildcard. Great move by the buds.

Imagine, if Malkin was allowed to play with Crosby on the same line like Draisaitle and MacJesus. They can own the points in the regular season, not in the playoffs though haha. MacDavid probably won't eclipse Crosby in cups, so individual accolades are awesome....but who cares.....pffff.

For the scale of where McDavid is at: Gretzky 1.9ppg, Lemieux 1.8ppg. Bossy 1.5ppg, McDavid 1.47ppg - everyone else ever below them. Honestly the league is growing at an exceptional rate. People say Bedard is going to be an exceptional player. Imagine McDavid competing every night with Bedard for Points. Making everyone better competing to keep up I think the league will be something different in 5 years maybe players having 250 300 points tbh.

If the amount of games in a season stays the same its highly unlikely anyone breaks 200 points, consistently getting 3 points a night every game is a high ask even for mcdavid. To be on a team and get 3 goals minimum and to be attached to each of those goals in some way.

I said it before and I will say it again. Edmonton will continue to go down this path as they have for years now. They were one dimensional before and even with all their acquisitions the last few years, they are still one dimensional. THIS is the problem with having a star player like Mac on a team and this should be very concerning with him as well, he may be our generational Gretz but I am for sure he wants a Cup and he won't do it with this team.
