Even for Latin language speakers, it's hard to pronounce French words. I'm Brazilian and I speak Portuguese, and it's so hard to adapt my pronunciation to say some French word, and more with a full sentence, even with both languages sharing a lot of similarities.

French it's not a mystery if you study arpitan you can catch french. Til Interlingua til latin if you study you can acess french in many ways. French is easy it's Romanic. Hungarian is asian and it's really, painfully harder....

@wary English is not realy latin and greek based. It's a West-Germanic language with vocabulary taken from french during the middle ages. It has some quirks from celtic languages and british Latin (a sort of slang used briefly after roman conquest) but that's about it.

The origin of the word Aubergine came from Sanskrit, which travelled from the Indian subcontinent into Persia and Arabia, then brought by the Portuguese sailors to Europe. No wonder "Brinjal" sounds similar to Aubergine so it's familiar to Yuki's ears. 🍆

We also have the word "oberżyna" in Polish. It's more common to call it "bakłażan", so maybe that's why the Polish girl didn't know, but we also use "oberżyna" for the color of the eggplant.

More context for chapeau, cap is actually not that far off, it comes from the Latin caput meaning head which gave capo for hat and at some point c followed by vowel (especially at the beginning of words) gained an h making a sh sound. For example, castel which became castle in English, became chastel in French and then Château. Same thing, capo became Chapeau

The most common Polish name for aubergine is "bakłażan", but it's also called "oberżyna". Ania probably didn't know that and she was thinking about the Polish word "oberża", meaning auberge, inn or tavern. However, the scientific name is "psianka podłużna" ("oblong solanum").

I mean, the US lady should have nailed this. English is basically a Germanic language with heaps of Nordic and lots of other influences, for sure. But it also has a very severe case of Latinitis. Native English speakers just seem to become selectively dyslectic even when it comes to such similar languages as Scandinavian or German. Just seem to shut down :)
@augth

@jc3drums916
@jc3drums916 4 ай бұрын
Not really. Even if she knew mater/pater or madre/padre, doesn't mean she should be able to derive mère/père. A lot of the other words are different enough from their US English counterparts that there is no reason to expect her to know them or be able to figure them out somehow. Chapeau maybe, but not casquette, and definitely not jupe. Even if someone considers etymology when doing this sort of exercise, it doesn't mean they know for sure which language a word came from, let alone are able to figure out what that word is in the root language.
@lauras1553
@lauras1553 3 ай бұрын
Well, I'm French but I also speak English and Spanish and the truth is: these French words are not close to any of these languages. Of course, there can be Latin influences in all these languages, but the French words have evolved in a very specific way (especially compared to Spanish and other Latin languages). It was impossible to get for her.

@lauras1553 3 ай бұрын
She's not running for presidency. She's actually not really representing India, none of them is representing their country, the information about the country is just here to enlighten the linguistic challenge. Besides, India is a country and a whole country cannot have a point of view, so your comment doesn't make much sense. And if we're talking about opinions of Indians, well, there will be various opinions, but be they positive or negative, they're not more relevant opinions than hers, because guess what, she's Indian too (and it's actually her life so if anything, her opinion actually matters more). And just so you know, he beginning of your comment doesn't hide well your judgemental view on her 😂 if it's the first thing that comes to your mind when watching the video, you're the one having a problem with her outfit, it would have been nice to at least be open and honest about it.
