This was Val Kilmer first role. Also, while the songs we written for the movie, it's Kilmer who did his own singing and dancing. Really talented guy.

@@davidmeir9348 yeah, and there's a little bit of irony in the fact that, for an actor whose first ever movie saw him doing all the singing, he ends up with bad throat cancer.

Another early Val Kilmer role was a film called Real Genius. I love it even more than Top Secret; it has an actual plot it takes seriously. But it's a comedy, and a very funny one at that.

I love all the anachronistic elements of this film. "Tutti Frutti" was a famous, classic song performed by Little Richard in 1957.

I think that the movie is supposed to be taking place in 1963, which is well after that song came out. There is another theory that the movie is set in 1984 and just weird, but with no anachronisms at all.
@dan_hitchman007
@dan_hitchman007 5 ай бұрын
@@toddjones1480 An anachronism is when something doesn't line up with the time period. Like a 1980's song played in a movie taking place in the 1940's. Or 1940's Nazis in the 80's. Or a President Carter joke in the 1960's. "Top Secret" is full of anachronisms.

Thanks for giving it some needed attention. 17:04 That magnifying glass moment is a nod to Peter Cushing's role as Dr. Frankenstein in the Hammer Horror films, of which he did many with his close friend Christopher Lee. "My uncle was born in America." "Oh, really?" "But he was one of the lucky ones. He managed to escape in a balloon during the Jimmy Carter presidency." Fun Fact: Theatrical movie debut of Val Kilmar. Director Cameos Fact: Directors Jim Abrahams, David Zucker, and Jerry Zucker appear as the German soldiers who show up at the door of the prop room to arrest Nick (Val Kilmer). Final Bow Fact: Peter Cushing, who began his screen career in the old Hollywood of the late 1930s, makes his final appearance in an American production. He made three more British films before passing in 1994. Music Enthusiast Fact: The songs that Val Kilmer sings in the film are actually performed by Val Kilmer himself and were featured on the film's soundtrack released in 1984 under Kilmer's character's name Nick Rivers. When Nick Rivers is in jail, a head shot of Cher can be clearly seen on the wall of the cell several times. Val Kilmer was dating Cher at the time. The Bookstore Scene Fact: The scene where Hillary (Lucy Gutteridge) and Nick (Val Kilmer) go into the Swedish bookstore was staged, shot, and then run backward for a "unique" sound. If you record the scene and play it backward, you will find all of the dialogue to be exactly what is shown in the subtitles except for the title of the book. "Europe On Five Quaaludes A Day" (which I can't confirm as real) is what Hillary asked for. A forward-playing version of the Swedish bookstore scene can be found on the DVD. The sight gag of Peter Cushing and the magnifying glass is a parody of a similar shot of Cushing from Terence Fisher's The Curse of Frankenstein (1957). The prosthetic that Peter Cushing wore in the bookshop scene involved the making of a cast of his face to fit it to. This same cast was used 30 years later by ILM to build a CGI model of his face for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016).

Val Kilmer is a fantastic singer. he sang the entire sound track for the Doors movie he did.. part of the issue you had with this film is that so many of the jokes are very time period specific - a lot carry forward, but so many you would really have to know what was going on at the time it was made. glad you saw the humor in this film. Real Genius is another fantastic 80s Val Kilmer film.

The concept underlying "Top Secret" is brilliance. "Airplane" is genius & timeless. But "Top Secret" is creativity on the next level. It's a mashup of genres before anyone had even the notion of cross-breeding genres & tropes into one film. One part Screwball Comedy. But then start adding in the other ingredients; Cold War-Era Spy films, World War II Resistance dramas, and the final piece of absurdity, a parody of those God-awful Elvis Presley musical films (yeah, that was it's own genre back in the 60's believe it or not). And what you get when it comes out of the oven is a cake of the wonderfully absurd & unique. Few things can compare. And the best thing is you can show this to both the Normies & Hipsters and it still confuses them, LOL.

The bit about the spy being crushed in the car is a direct reference to a scene in the James Bond film Goldfinger (a real classic). And the radio antenna extending was another perfect sight gag. Tutti Fruiti is a real song and was originally sung by Little Richard back in the hay days of rock 'n Roll it was first released in 1957 and the island scene for Hillary is based on the movie "Blue Lagoon" which starred Brooke Shields. and Nick jumping the motorcycle over the barbed wire fences is a reference to the Movie "The great Escape" made 1963 and there it was Steve Mcqueen riding the bike also a great movie for you to watch some of it based on real history during world war II. And if you're impressed that Val Kilmer sang the songs you should also watch Olivier stone's "The Doors" 1990, its about the 60's band the Doors and Val Kilmer plays the Iconic Jim Morrison and he also sang all the songs there too.a bit more darker than this movie but a good watch non the less.

My cousins and I got our grandmother to take us to see this when I was 14 in theaters when it was brand new. I never laughed so hard in my life because not only was the movie hilarious, but the pissed off look on my grandmother's face, especially when the ballet scene happened was almost funnier than the movie and my cousins and I still laugh thinking about it. As far as being disrespectful, they weren't. Comedy, especially spoof comedy always gets a pass. They are not intentionally trying to hurt anyone and if a German filmmaker or any other nationality wanted to do a spoof of the USA and make fun of Americans, as long as it was made as a comedy, it's OK. My generation had a saying, "If you can't laugh at yourself, who can you laugh at?" Now, a lot of younger people are way too serious and get offended too easily. Life is short, so relax, have fun and enjoy your life. Don't sweat the small stuff. Life is hard enough, so don't take away the few joys we get in life like laughing.

There are a bunch of spoofs of other movies in this film. To name only two, Blue Lagoon starring Brooke Shields is a film about two kids stranded in a paradisaical island and growing up to be teenagers and later parents before leaving said paradise. The Great Escape is a movie about prisoners making a tunnel to escape. In it Steve McQueen on a motorcycle jumps a fence. Both are great movies to watch if you haven't yet. I really enjoy watching you laugh at the stunts of these comedies of my youth. Saw them all in the movies in the late 70s, early 80s. For silliness of a different brand, try the Woody Allen movies of the mid 70s. Love And Death is his great spoof on War And Peace.

Airplane! was one of the most profitable comedies of all time but Top Secret! bombed hard at the box office. The filmmakers wrongfully assumed that Airplane! was a massive hit because of their jokes but failed to realize that the characters and the plot they borrowed from Zero Hour! held the movie together. Basically, they had a great collection of jokes but didn't know how to write a screenplay on their own, despite the help of a seasoned screenwriter. The plot is absurd in itself because they decided to spoof Elvis Presley's musicals and spy thrillers set during WW2. They thought they went a little too far and lost many spectators in the process. When they worked on The Naked Gun, they made sure they had a solid story and character's arc before writing the jokes. Top Secret! became a cult classic when it was released on VHS a few years later.

@@MattB2603 nope ("...by various artists"). I just didn't name all of them (like my favourite - after Elvis's. - by Karin Stanek). I think I may even have heard a bootleg from Led Zeppelin doing the song. Didn't Brenda Lee do it as well?

You will have to watch this movie a number of time to see all the gags that are in there. It rips off spy movies to the max. The car that got a rear end ding was a Pinto, look up that car, to get the joke. Good react, stay well.

This is the film that I pester nearly every review channel to watch shy of the ones run by filmmakers. Just randomly came on Twitter last week even when discussion what the best comedy films of all time are and this the top shelf for me. Just pounding the audience with comedy gold. Then all those incredibly filmed scenes on top of it like the backward to foreword Potato Farm scene (still brilliant to this day) or the underwater Gunsmoke fight scene. It's just so good.

I haven’t seen this movie in decades. It’s now even sillier. The WW2 uniforms combined with the GDR / Cold War plot and this terrible German 🤪. Love your content and your reaction to the ballet scene was as always on point😂.

If the mic track is clean enough, you can run the mic and movie tracks through separate compressors, or 2 series of compressors to gently, progressively squish the peaks, then adjust the gain on each compressor to mix. Your natural, authentic speech is perfect, so I hope this helps you adjust the room and processing chain to your comfort and save "performance mode" for your music,... which you found an hour to practice this month,... right? :) :P

Thankyou for the tips❤️ the music thing is a little rough right now, I don’t get time to practice on the guitar or record any covers but hopefully I’d get back into it soon because it’s so much fun:)

The German language used in the movie is actually Yiddish. They actually say things unrelated to the plot, like "Today I ate a apple pie".

@@PaulWinkle "East German characters speak primarily in Yiddish, sometimes using phrases that would have been recognizable to the grandchildren of Yiddish-speaking immigrants - a technique borrowed from Sid Caesar. For example, a train conductor announcing a stop says, “ Zolstu vaksn vi a tsibele mit der [sic] kop indr’erd ” (you should grow like an onion with your head in the ground), and a waiter at Hotel Gey Schluffen (go to sleep) says, “Gey kakn af yam” (go poop in the ocean), “Ikh bin oysgemutshet” (I am exhausted), and “Es vet helfn vi a toytn bankes ” (It will help like blood-cupping a corpse), while subtitles “translate” these phrases aspork-based dinner options." - Arnold Dashefsky and Ira M. There's a lot of humor that's anchored to much older pop culture, like Mel Torme and spy tropes and Western movies and others. Humor tends to be topical and some things are dated. Same thing with Airplane

In 1998, David Zucker made "BASEketball", which is a comedy sport movie. It is inspired by a real sport he invented with a few of his friends, which is a mix between basketball and baseball that you can play in your backyard. It doesn't directly spoof any movie but it pokes fun at the sport industry with the same kind of absurd humor. And it stars Trey Parker and Matt Stone, the creators of South Park.
