I use the experience of a friend, Walter, of my father to determine what is a bad day. June 1944, Normandy. Walter is shot through both legs by a German 88mm anti tank cannon. The first time I know that I met Walter was late summer 1962 as he was kneeling to load fence posts into his pickup and he refused my father’s offer of help. In 1971 just before I went to boot camp Walter showed me the scar on his head.
