Belize is a beautiful country located in Central America. Formerly known as British Honduras, Belize is often known for its amazing Mayan ruins, Blue Hole and Barrier Reef.

This video was amazing and informative, but I feel like she didn't really explain what Creole or Garifuna was fully. Both Creoles and Garifunas are MOSTLY African ancestry. However, Creoles have ancestry from the British and some Spanish as well. Similar to how African Americans have some European ancestry. And the Garifuna, while mostly African have significant ancestry from the Caribs, and originally were from the island of St. Vincent. Africans and Indigenous people literally mixed for centuries there before the British banished them to Roatan. It's thought that the Africans outnumbered the indigenous people greatly which is why most people look more African than indigenous. However, they still speak a Native American language. Edit: Just saw someone else said the same thing lol

@QTee Garifuna are Africans with some native Admixture. They speak a native American language. That's it. Your logic is like saying African Americans have British admixture and speak a European language, so they MUST be European. Lol just uneducated.

Yes in Nicaragua we have lots of garifunas n yes they speak garifuna but also native language from d miskitos kindom which is or was between Honduras Nicaragua n Jamaica those Native Indians use to run that area I Love my history 👍🏽

Beautiful and nice to see the different fraction of krio/creoles. I'm a Krio from Sierra Leone 🇸🇱 in West Africa the funny thing about us is we understand almost every single English base krio in the world but most don't understand ours From Nigerian pidgin to Jamaican patois. Ours look something like this: "Kushe, how d body, how altin" Hello how are you, how's everything. "Watin na you name n ousi you tap?" What is your name and address "Fambul una tenki for yeri watin mesef ebi na ya" Thank you for reading my comment .

Miss Berizzy heyyy my sister! 💕💕 Thank you for watching. You are right! I have some Nigerian friends and after being around them more often and hearing them speak pidgin, I notice so many similarities. I’m not surprised though because most of the African slaves that were brought to Jamaica were from West Africa and so the patois definitely has some patois influence. I’m a big fan of Afro beats too and notice the pidgin coming out in songs a lot too

referral madness I get what you’re saying but you can’t deny that the abundance of Jamaican migrants there has something to with the language. I agree that most colonized nations have a creolized language but judging from the accent, spelling, & sentence structures, the Jamaican imprint is definitely there.

referral madness To your point about the other Spanish countries you mentioned, when they were under British rule the British brought over Jamaicans to be workers. That’s why we have communities there. Look up San Andres in Columbia. The people know they are of Jamaican descent

Spanish? Dont confuse Spanish with southamerican or mayans in Belize! Spanish speaking is not always Spanish! The Spanish are from Spain in Europe!

Great episode! I worked in Belize off and on for years when I was a grad student, absolutely loved the country. I try and make it back now as a tourist regularly. Absolutely lovely place and the people are amazing.

Definitely a great and informative video. However, the Garifuna People (Mixture of Island Carib+ Arawak+ West African = [Garinagu]) as we refer to ourselves, were never slaves(we were banished from St Vincent because we refused to be subdued). We do have African ancestry, but we are native to the Americas (via St Vincent/ Yurumein, where our Island Carib, Arawak and later African ancestors lived/ Intermarried for decades before British colonization in 1795). The Garifuna Language itself is from the ARAWAKAN (Native to the Americas) family of languages. Just a small correction. Keep making great content!

@@AyeeeItsCam I get where you're coming from. I wasn't trying (or even attempting) to downplay in any of the Garinagus connection to the continent of Africa. I'm just curious of what you mean when you say "African" or being (80% African). The 54 countries (demarcations)that now make up continental Africa did not exist when the Garinagu were established in St. Vincent. Furthermore continental Africa is a land mass with thousands of cultures; most with their own unique languages and belief systems and tribes. Again, I do understand where you're coming from but saying something like that is a stretch. I'd be willing to read any references you want to provide for your claim (in terms of any 80% similarities with a specific tribe on Continental Africa). Thanks

I am a Garifuna-American with family in both Honduras and Belize. The Creole guest is actually very accurate in her description of the origin of Garifuna people in Belize. The Garifuna in Belize today all descend from Honduras and Guatemala. We immigrated there into the Stann Creek district in the 1880s through 1940s. You won't even here that truth from the Nation Garifuna Counil of Belize.

@@CharisMaggieTV That is correct, all Garifuna in Belize are originally descended from immigrants from Honduras and lesser extent, Guatemala. Unfortunately, the history is not told accurately and there are a lot of stories about coming directly from St. Vincent to Belize which is not true. In my own family, three of my grandparents were born in Honduras yet settled in Dangriga, Belize in the 1930s. Also, anyone can see almost all Garifuna in Belize have Spanish surnames. This is all due to us being in Honduras and Guatemala for 100 years before we ever settled in large numbers in Belize.

The Garifuna in Belize have accomplished alot, but should stop telling nonsense settlement stories. The great TV Ramos was Honduran from Puerto Cortes. our grandparents and great grandparents come from Honduras and Guatemala. That is where the roots are for us as Garifuna people.

The Real Belizean? The real Puerto Rican? The Real American? Sounds kinda retarted. The real Belizeans are the former Slaves and Slave Master. Short history, Slavery ended and Belize settlement became a Coolony. After Self Government the United Kingdom left Belize in the Hands of the Creole People who are still dominant in Belize..

She says her Dad is Creole and her mom is Spanish? Translation= her father is a Blackman, and her mother is Maya Indian mixed with Mestizo. {Spanish is a language and Spaniards are European born in Spain.

You are correct but this is how people in New York/East coast and some Caribbean people refer to people of Spanish descent. Since she is Creole her people likely descended from some Spanish ancestry which is where the mestizo comes from.

That’s very interesting With any dialect, If you aren’t use to hearing it, it will take a while getting use to since different terms can be used for different things and all

@@AyeeeItsCam actually, some self-identifying Belizean Mestizos have significant African ancestry, either from a Kriol/Creole ancestor or through their ethnogenesis in the Yucatan of Mexico.

Garifuna people were not "brought from Africa". 🤣 They are Carib/Arawak/African mix from St.Vincent.

As an American it's interesting that Creoles identify themselves as a whole other thing. They look like an average African American. I feel like in America, those who are biracial typically look more ambiguous (but not always).

Let's it straight, you are right when you say Belize creole sounds like Jamaican creole. The black people of Belize were Jamaicans brought there by the British to Work the Plantation. Before Jamaica got independence they were like sister countries with the main focus on Jamaica. I am surprised to see that these young people don't know that part of there history

I love your culture. My father’s family is Trinidadian, and I understood just what she meant by the race mingling. I think Belize is a very beautiful country, with very beautiful people.

It sounds very Guyanese for sure, with a mix of Jamaican patois. And I think it sounds like Guyanese because Guyana is an English speaking country nestled between Spanish countries just like Belize is.

Garifunna's are originated from St Vincent and the Grenadines. They were abolished from the island and were sent to most of the spanish countries (central) Blize, Honduras, Guatemala, USA, etc

Belize isn't a "Spanish" country. Even most of our Mestizos can speak Belizean Kriol and English, as well as Spanish
