This award-winning film explores the centuries-old connection between the northern fur seal and the Unangan natives of Alaska's Pribilof and Aleutian Islands in the middle of the Bering Sea. Aquilina Lestenkof traces five generations of her own family's history in this remote part of the world, weaving together native, Russian, and American cultural threads. At the heart of the story, are the fur seals. Like the Unangan, the fur seals are struggling to survive. As Aquilina says, 'if they're not here, then we won't be either.'
"People of the Seal" has been recognized in the following ways:

I hope that the Unangan and their culture, heritage, language and traditions survive as much as I wish the same for the Kel Tamachek (Touareg), Machiguengua, Kogi, Gaels, Aymará and Imazighen, people I have lived with and whose languages I have learned to keep them alive.

Thank you for this most interesting and fascinating view into your culture. I am half Italian, Scott Irish and 1/4 Cherokee Indian. My best friend Jean Black Elk was full-blooded Lakota and Oglala Sioux. We were friends for 50 years until she crossed over to the Stars. I know more about being a Lakota then being Cherokee Indian. I was raised on the shores of Lake Erie not in North Carolina - Cherokee country. The Erie Indians of our area up here on the Great Lake had to move east and assimilate with the Seneca Indians.

It is interesting to learn that Russians mixed with the local population to make it into bilingual societies, while the Americans decided to deprive the local population of its own language.

Frank B Yep, Russians simply expanded their territory politically, (since us Siberian Indigenous people weren’t doing politics on a global scale) The treatment of Indigenous Siberians by Slavic Russians was 10000x better than how Europeans treated Indigenous Americans. When Ivan The Terrible did try to conquer the Chukchi, and realized he couldn’t, it led to trade, peace, and mutual understanding between the Russians and Chukchi. So yeah, Russia didn’t really hurt Siberians in any significant way. :)

As someone with Cree ancestry, i empathize deeply with these folks and their story. Even still, it's just not accurate to say they were the only captive labor force ever held by the American government. While American slavery usually took the guise of private ownership, its a fine distinction in my book. Slavery is slavery. It's wrong, whatever the corporate organization looks like behind the scenes.

My grandfather, Lambert Joseph Wigle, married to Roxanne Hoffman, a baby taken from Wounded Knee and adopted to the Hoffman's in Kingsville, Ontario. He can be seen pitching hay and chopping wood in suit clothes and hat. I was sent to a reserve school three times between 4 - 7 and wrote the RCMP, "this is a Nazi camp" German Diefenbaker era. But, there I met aboriginals from South America that were sent to reform school for stealing, vagrancy, left behind by parents or parents arrested and deported without them and they did not understand that they were illegals, right? My stay was brief...out the window. I have special sadness for the northern aboriginals as I lived on the Balsam Creek old reserve wherein the weather dropped down to the same as Siberia...50 degrees F below. The Dutch co took over Hudson Bay that was always French/aboriginal without payment. And, it is only in the news. It still belongs to aboriginals.

Jesusandbible Of course, your disdain for the religion a majority of Russians follow is probably from your hate of Russians. You seem like an old man (judging by your profile picture) so I’m not surprised that you still have a Cold War mindset. I am Siberian Eskimo, and I understand that the colonization of some of the Siberian groups was in the past. It was also led by Tsar Ivan The Terrible. The same guy who killed his own son and enslaved his own people. Don’t blame some idiots actions on all of Russian Slavs or Eastern Orthodoxy. The guy who conducted the colonization was a non-white man however, and most of his soldiers were non-Slavic. (His name is Yermak Timofeyovich) In addition, the rest of Russia’s colonization was done by Peter The Great, the guy who wanted to Europeanize Russia. He took away the general non-European culture, because he believed European cultures to be superior. (Note: Russia had extreme West asian, Central asian, and Northern asian influence. Most people in Russia were mixed with other races.) Russian Orthodoxy does not worship idols. The icons are simply meant to represent Jesus and the saints, and to remind us of them. We also do not pray to saints or Mary, we ask them to pray on behalf of us in heaven. A priest does not forgive our prayers, he asks God to forgive our prayers. We do not have a pope, we have a patriarch, who we do not worship. The Catholics however, do worship the pope, as well as a figure called “black Mary” (she’s not meant to be African, she’s just the color black) That is what truly sounds “satanic” to me. Religions cannot be to blame for this, it is people using the guise of religion to accomplish their agendas. The treatment of Indigenous people in Russia is *MILES* better than whatever happened in the Americas. *_Indigenous people in Russia still have their dignity, and the Slavs learned to respect us, and left us alone. They are far more honorable than your European colonists. Russian Slavs did not colonize in your European sense, it was more like conquering. The land that Russia has now is a result of political conquering, not literal colonization. The only group I can think of that was “conquered” by the Slavs was the Yakuts._* Take your disgusting, inaccurate, anti-Russian agenda elsewhere. Russia is a nation full of many different races. Russia does not belong to Slavs, because there is no such thing as being “ethnically Russian” Being “Russian” is _strictly_ a nationality, not an ethnicity.

When I was growing up I didn't understand the importance of culture camp. Being only 1/4th Aleut, I never tried to learn the Aleut language or understand its culture. Now at 24 years old, I realize how indigenous cultures around the world are being white washed, and its more important than ever to those who are descendent of indigenous people to claim their roots, learn the traditions, and keep the language alive. There are far too few full blooded Aleuts today, hopefully this will change in the future.

Robert, please understand that we are all here on God's great earth by way of Him. Regardless of how one culture may have "invaded" another's , this earth we are on is not ours to begin with. God (to be culturally and politically correct) or The Higher Power we as "People" pray to and give thanks to, is the one whom created it(earth), as my aunt said in the video "we" are visiting here. Yes some cultures did other cultures wrong by how they welcomed themselves as well as helped themselves upon entering the other's, land, but think about how much they knew. It was not always pleasent but it has made us who we are today. I hold no grudges and us as a society have to give thanks to God/Higher Power for only does He have the power to end us all.

@@byronmandregan5982Stop. You have absolutely no right to bring up that crap here. Christianity was part of the driving force in the cultural genocide against First Nations people. Literally robbing them of their culture and heritage to replace it with “Christian values”. Leave people ALONE. If you want to believe in the Christian god, that’s great for you, but stop trying to force it on other people, especially in the replies on a video about First Nations people. Honestly how dare you.

That is a fascinating programme. Thank you for that. As to the question half way through how not to be angry for the past I suppose we could all be angry. the Romans and the French conquered the UK. more recently in the 1800s mentioned on the programme my ancestors were mining coal underground some by age 10 years of age. They had nothing. I just forget about that, get a good education and do better. We can only all live in today. If we go back to being angry about the past it tends not to make us happier - same for all the women in my family subject, almost owned by men in the UK the 1800s. That was then and now we do better. I can see why they liked the Greek Orthodox church. It is like the highest of high church in my Roman Catholic church with gorgeous music and paintings - both are the best of religion.

I suggest to you that, prior to you having (open mouth, insert foot) the desire to leave a remark of such, to do a bit of research. For at your finger tips is the whole world for one's mind to learn from. Has no one said to you " look before you leap" ? I am in no way trying to create an argument, simply asking you to take a moment and do some searching, be it for information or maybe even some cases a bit of "soul" searching. Thank you.

The over fishing of the industrial fishing boats, the red tide's, & the warming of areas in the far north are all reasons for the fur seals decline. The navies of the world dumping their radioactive waist from their subs and ships are also to blame most likely. Ozone & underwater earthquakes & volcanoes erupting beneath the surface of the ocean. All these could be the causes plus other unknown things.

There may be small condolence about the churches in that aboriginals needed proof of entrance into Canada. The names would have been logged and sent back to Russia, Italy or Norway. The BC aboriginals have an Italian dna mixed and their language is a form of Italian/Latin and sometimes mixed with Hawaiian. Norway? Norway also built teepees and many of their customs were similiar to the Sioux. You girls look Apache so do you have dna mix of Inuit/Spanish/Russian mixture? Apache is tricky as Wounded Knee was not just one dna. It was multicultural...some had Portuguese. I have ties with Pine Ridge but not the Portuguese nor the modern day would be Sioux the Turks. Aboriginals needing proof can go back to the church baptisms. I had relatives in the UK that could speak Russian which surprised me but when the "whites" were coming it was the Kings sending their relatives to marry into tribes to gain land rites, etc. Pain Court, Ontario is an aboriginal reserve but you probably would not realize it if you were driving through it. The skin is white, mostly, with red cheeks and dark hair and the language was French but not like the French of Montreal nor France as they were cut off from Europe for so long. They were named squatters and gathered into Fort Malden to draw a line for their own protection and took on the English or German or French names.

.the Saami people also called Laplanders of northern Norway,Sweden and Finland lived in tipis, although they differed from Plains tipis in the fact that they didn't have smoke flaps, and they were not culturallý nor racially related to the Norse or the Finns, but were more closely related to the other arctic Reindeer herders that ranged through northern Russia to Siberia and are related to the Inuit peoples. Oh and by the way, the Apaches are an Athabaskan people like their close relatives the Navajo who call theirselves "Dine'" as do the Athabaskans of Alaska and Canada, the ancestors of Both the Navajo and Apache migrated to the southwest approximately 800 years ago, and the Navahos language is still virtually identical to the Athabaskans of the north while the Apache language has changed some, it is still understood by both the Navajo and the northern Athabaskans, and I myself am Oglalla Lakota (Sioux) and the massacre at Wounded Knee happened on my reservation PINE RIDGE South Dakota, and involved Lakota people being killed, so just where does this Potugeese and Italian shit your talking about come in, and what kind of ties do YOU have with the Sioux, the Lakota Oyate makoce kin He Sapa yelo!???

iris wigle The Europeans didn’t try to peacefully marry into Native American tribes. Maybe some of those Indigenous people you talk about, look “white” because of rape, or forced loss of culture, which resulted in marrying white people. Russia was certainly more peaceful with the indigenous people, and they didn’t do anything in a European sense (until Russia was later Europeanized by Peter the Great, who thought European customs and values were better than Russian ones.) After the earlier Russians realized that they couldn’t own the land that the tribes had, they respected the tribes, and started to trade, and have a mutual understanding with them. Russia politically conquered Siberia, because none of the tribes were on the world stage when it came to politics, like Russia was. So, Indigenous people lived their own lives, without having to worry about Chinese or other country relations. That could be left to Russia. Also, the new trade routes from Asia to Russia to Siberia helped the indigenous people in many ways. I have absolutely no hate for those ancient Russians as a Siberian Yupik. They never hurt us in a significant way, and our political association with them, helped us stay safe from Chinese warriors who _did_ want to kill us. THE IMPORTANT PART: You say some of the Native Americans you have seen “look Russian” I am assuming you mean Slavic, as there is no such thing as being “ethnically Russian” Being “Russian” is strictly a nationality. So, people can’t “look Russian”

The people have seal harvesting so they have meat to survive the winter months. They also have halibut, sea lion and many of the birds are edible. They have berries and pootchies. I was fortunate to visit in 2013, the sounds and smells are so amazing. The seals are not hunted for their fur anymore. The people in the village/community take care of each other the best they can.

Same with when the irish and chinese came here. There are many books written on the irish slave trade. The Irish were slaves before Africans and valued lower. They often were used as mine and railroad labor then dumped in mass graves. At one point the Irish made up 20% of the us military hoping to earn more freedom and rights in 1800s. The Irish also formed the first gangs in to defend themselves from others in new york.
